cAN'T QUITE GET THE HANG OF COMBAT

Playing W3 for the first time. Just did the tutorial mission in Kaer Morhen, I just can't seem to get the hang of strong attack. I've left the keyboard assignments unchanged (left shift + LMB), but I can't reliably produce a strong attack. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.
Is one able to do a strong attack only once every few seconds?

Make sure you are holding left shift continuously, before you press RMB.
left shift acts as a modifier, don't press them down together at the same time.
