Use same character for HoS and then BW without playing the base game

I have just purchased the GOTY Xbox one edition and I was wondering if the following is possible. I don’t think it is but I wanted to check first.

1. Start new “Heart of Stone only” game with the level up and complete it.
2. Take above character into a new Blood & Wine game.

The reason I am asking is that it would be a shame to build a character up in Heart of Stone to not be able to use it in Blood & Wine.
I do not own any previous game saves, I completed the base game on PC.


I think my only option to do this would be

1. Start a “Fresh Start” game
2. Complete game as far as “A Poet Under Pressure”
3. Start Heart of Stone from within this save
4. Start Blood & Wine from within this save

I did not try it that way, but I can confirm that Hearts of Stone is playable in a "Blood and Wine only" game. It is probably easiest to simply try it yourself, and see if the first quest of Blood and Wine is added to the journal, the only difference is the starting level (32 vs. 34) then.

I didn't think of doing it that way around, you are correct "Blood and Wine only" does allow both expansions to be played.
