Messenger at Hairy Bear inn. How do I get info out of him?

I met the messenger, drank with him, sold the badges I had, tried to bribe him, told to sod off. drank, sold badges, threatened, told to sod off. Did not drink, told to sod off.
Is there a particular combination that's needed or will he just keep telling me to sod off? The journal still tells me to meet him after he's told me to sod off

You must drink with him until the animation stops you (about 5 beers). The preferable approach would be selling the badges and then getting wasted with him.

Just "outdrink" him and ask for a job.
