A Living, Breathing NIGHT CITY

Except he was in fact he was implying that, as the text implies that, which is why I ignore both...

Or you are playing in a world where it is the wild west of the movies, and everyone opens fire on everyone else for the fun of it... Because hey why not, they didn't give us these guns as fashion accessories... or wait, they did, but also because shooty..... everyone walks around in metal gear all the time, because it;s the minimum required to get to work, and while you are working... and really you can sleep in it too provided you lock your concrete doors at night...

I mean seriously sard, if you take everything in the book at face value, and don't weed out the sillier bits, then your world is pretty much unsirvivable by anyone but edgerunners, which means you ARE talking GTA online, with lobbies of thousands...

Don't go to any actually dangerous countries, if you think this is true. And that's not what I was implying, that every night there is a bloodbath. What I said was this: "This ain't Grand Theft Auto. Everyone is armed, lots have cyberware and some people even have professional killers from the world's vast supply of same working for them cheap.

Man. I CANNOT WAIT until the world gets a taste of Cyberpunk 2077. "I'm gonna steal this dude's car! It looks ama..ohmigod! Aggh!"
Dark Souls for the GTA set. "

How do you get "bloodbath" from that? It means, unlike in GTA, if you try to steal someone's CAR, you could easily get shot, since odds are very high the owner is armed and/or has protection.

Pretty clear.

As for your "two outcomes" view, just no. Zimbabwe. Joahnnesburg. In Phnom Penh, the security guards carried Ak-47s. I wanted to carry myself, and I'm not about to go murdering people. Or Beirut. Did you know the rate of firearm ownership, private, in the US right now is 101 per 100 persons? http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-states#rate_of_civilian_firearm_possession Canada stands at number 12 to teh USA #1, still a lot of guns up here.

People with guns don't just kill each other for fun. Why would you have that idea? And a gun doesn't mean you are a scumbag or a lawabider, it might just mean in Cyberpunk 2020 that there is a reasonable chance you will need to defend yourself before the underfunded, beleaguered Night City police department can get there.

This is not a pro or anti gun statement. I am refuting your idea that in either a) the real world or b)Night City, having a population with a near 100% firearm ownership, as the books clearly and reasonably state, complete with supporting arguments, leads to some kind of nightly bloodbath or an unplayable, unrealistic world.

I mean that, if CDPR implements the game world as designed by Mike Pondsmith, I hope they make it clear this is not GTA and that you cannot "just" hijack someone's car. It could easily get you shot for trying. You may be an Alpha Predator, but you aren't bulletproof in 2020. Be careful or be dead.

You are cherry picking...

I never said anything positive or negative about gun ownership...

In a world where it's legal to open fire on someones vehicle when they park in a handicapped space, where tow truckers can shoot you for interfering with them, and where booster gangs are pretty much evenly matched with Swat teams in terms of arms and armor, then what you have is a goddamn bloodbath. with every single person joining in.

In a world where permanent body armor able to shrug off anything 9mm or below costs less than some of the handguns you can buy, and you can wear metal gear over that, yeah, everyone is bulletproof, and armed. And your bullshit security system is no match for my lock picking penis with pop up gun mount and pepper spray ejaculator 5000....

There is a reason shit like "handicapped parking space death penalty" is only mentioned once, briefly.... because it's hyperbole that didn't get caught by editors...

Nope. Really not missed by anyone. They mention it clearly, in bold face, and include an awesome sign, right beside it!

And then they reinforce the seriousness of car theft one page later:

"If You’re Parking on the Street, Lock Your Vehicle: There’s only one way to rest easy with
your vehicle parked on Night City streets-Full Urban Lockdown Mode. When leaving the
vehicle, be certain to activate all passive movement sensors and active alarm modes. Make
certain if using an active countermeasures defense system (such as light-plastic fragmentation
grenades, Apex units or stun-chem sprays) that sufficient room is left between the system’s
free fire zone and other vehicles to permit other drivers to move about freely. Even the best
ACM system can sometimes overreact; thus, this “courtesy” practice is law in Night City, and
carries a $1 OOOeb fine and a mandatory 4 day jail sentence."

Frag grenades. But, hey, only light plastic. You'll probably live. APEX units, well, you probably won't.

I'm not sure why your Night City is so soft, but the R.Talsorian one sounds a lot more like a Dark Future and also a lot more fun. How can you not love that handicapped sign?

It's not hyperbole at all. They just don't want you to think it's Now. It's dangerous, well-armed and a little crazy. It's America in the Near Future. It's Cyberpunk.

I'd like to think that that is not where America is heading, but I honestly can't say that with conviction.
I do hope the game has a dark, paranoid atmosphere though.

Incredibly, I'm with Suhiir on that one.

It's true what Sard says.

People do and CAN live in war zones but the city would just stop towing services and start employing death squads long before that happens.

that just seems too cartoony. It just falls under green monster as tragedy category.

I'm all for politically motivated death squads by the way for the sake of realism

OK I'll bite ... just what's their motivation/agenda?

Animal rights?
Honest elections?
Better food at the soup kitchens?
Government seizure of all private property and the creation of a communist/socialist state?
More "I Love Lucy" reruns on the Nostalgia Channel?

I hope there are many competing death squads. With many different agendas.

it would not be as fun to play in a warzone where there would only be criminals.

In a power vacuum (and I mean third world countries situation), ,the toughest guys on the blocks are usually politically motivated. Except for Mexico, I cannot think of a situation where it is not so (and even then, the govt is pretty much still in control in Mexico).

In many cases the "political motivation" is really little more then a flimsy excuse for grabbing all you can via the use of force ... but that subject a can of worms in and of itself.

Depends. When you fight 12 years in the jungle with non-existing supply lines and no rear areas to speak of, it's kind of hard to make that point.

But yeah, I can see how a group dedicated to piracy can masquerade as a political entity, but they usually don't come to power. They kind of just create their own turf and eventually they are destroyed or at least contained by stronger government forces.

Watch out, I posted something about political corectness and it got deleted.

Real life politics are outside the forum. Num num num.

Yup. Giving examples to support your argument is acceptable, within reason, but take care not to start judging countries, everyone.

(We are WATCHING YOU. We are always watching. And if that doesn't creep you out, it probably should).

Zzz..snortwhat! WHAT? Yes, yes we are! Bans! Bans for all!

Traffic. Cities are full of traffic. I'd like to see morning and evening rush hours (feels like days sometimes) so if you're out on a mission you have to contend with, or use, the traffic.

I'd like to see random traffic events. Game on at the stadium? Traffic before and after game is a nightmare. Accident on 5th? Avoid like the plague.

Also if you cause traffic mayhem, like blowing cars up behind you, I don't want to see the same, predictable flow of traffic behind me.

I'd really like it of the police blocked off roads due to your rampages, and to see the news reporters trying to get a good picture of your face. That's one thing I would've also liked to see in GTA 5. Anyway yeah, I'd like to see some realistic traffic.

Or at least some traffic.
I seem to recall a few cars driving around in Bloodlines (or maybe not ... it's been a while) and even if all they did was go back and forth it did add to the "realistic" and "the world is not static" feel of the game.
