What happens after 31st? Does ownership cease or become dependant on some MS criteria? Will a gorge-full of digital Geralts be forced to run the Gamegrid?

Nah, MS is actually nicer than Sony in this respect. You got it - you own it forever, even if your subscription expired, or at least 1. until you die and your account password is lost in the abyss of time, 2. the Earth is demolished by some global cataclysm, 3. MS goes out of business, which is as likely as # 2.
