GPU running really hot while using the toolkit

Hi Guys,

I'm just in the process of learning the toolset and it looks awesome so far. However i'm having a problem with my GPU running really hot while using it - i have an Radeon 7970 - latest drivers.

Playing The Witcher 2 the temps usually reach around 72c - as around the same in most games give or take 1 or 2 c either way. However just with a basic scene in the toolkit - pretty much a basic textured terrain, a bridge mesh and a sun i noticed the Fan ramping up on the card and when i checked the temp was nearly 80c - any ideas?

I know the card is able to run hotter that that but i don't see why it should be running so hot with hardly any reason too...

Cheers
Paul

Maybe coller on the GPU or drivers? Sometimes, latest drivers is not better than old.

Sorry for my bad English :|

There is no frame limit in the editor which means the graphic cards still has to work pretty hard when it's trying to render +900 frames. As seen in this picture by having a blank scene I average around 1020 FPS. Starcraft 2 used to suffer from this in the menus where there was no frame limit and even fried some graphics card due to the stress. http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2010/08/03/starcraft-2-doesn-t-limit-framerates/1

I've reported about this problem before, but hopefully now that it's open beta and more people join in. We can get this fixed as I wouldn't want to see my own nor anyones graphic card get fried due to trying to mod.

If you have MSI Afterburner, you can use the FPS limiter to keep it down :) I currently have it limited to 60FPS, and my GPU isn't breaking 50 degrees.

The rule of thumb is don't worry about the GPU letting the magic smoke out until you see it hit 95C.

In addition to Semaphia's good advice to set an FPS limit, setting a more aggressive fan profile (MSI Afterburner has a good fan profile tool) is an effective way to keep it cooler. Fan should be 100% by the time you hit 80C or 90C.

Thanks Semaphia I did not know about that. If you're looking for it like me, start MSI Afterburner On-Screen Display Server > click the wrench and you should see it.
