There’s going to be a new short Blade Runner anime set in 2022

It’s being directed by Cowboy Bebop’s Shinichiro Watanabe

In more Blade Runner news, Sony Pictures Japan has released a teaser clip of a new anime based on the film that will be directed by Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe. As spotted by Kotaku, the short is named Blade Runner Black Out 2022, and takes place three years after the original film.

The plot revolves around an electricity failure on the west coast of the US. According to the film’s official timeline, that failure leads to cities shutting down, financial and trade markets are thrown into chaos, and food supplies dwindle. There’s no proof as to what caused the blackouts, but Replicants — the bio-engineered robots featured in the original Blade Runner, are blamed.

The teaser video shows behind-the-scenes footage of artists and animators working on the film. It also details concept art for characters, costumes, and some action sequences. “The work that has influenced me the most in my anime profession would be, of course, Blade Runner,” Watanabe says in the video clip. Watanabe also notes that he wants to pay maximum respect to the original 1982 film, and is trying not to create an imitation, Kotaku reports.

It’s the latest short out of the Blade Runner universe to show more detail about the period between the first movie, set in 2019, and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049. Yesterday we were introduced to new character Sapper, played by Dave Bautista, and before that, to Blade Runner 2049’slikely villain Niander Wallace, helmed by a creepy, dystopian Jared Leto. Blade Runner 2049 is due out October 6th, 2017.

I started watching psycho pass until that episode where a bunch of girls start to go missing in a school, like 10 girls disappear and the police doens't suspect anythin. Dumb godamm animes, an yet Psycho Pass is still one of the less dumb animes out there...the rest is pure fan service immature shit based on what otakus think real life is like, the problem is most of them have no idea of what it is like, so animes these days are full of childish characters who overeact about everythin.

Mr. Miyazaki is right:

Hayao Miyazaki: Anime Suffers Because the Industry is Full of "Otaku"

"Lauded animated film director Hayao Miyazaki says anime suffers when the people making it can't stand observing real people.

Hayao Miyazaki spoke out against the anime industry in a recent television interview. He recently retired, making The Wind Rises his final film, with many of his previous works such as Spirited Away becoming popular even outside of Japan. According to Miyazaki the quality of anime is suffering because industry staff is made up of "otaku," or people who obsessively love anime.

The term "otaku" has a rather negative connotation in Japan and is used more to classify fans who obsess over something (this need not be anime). Miyazaki's specific concerns are over the lack of attention paid to people in real life. He said people in the industry "don't spend time watching real people" and can be characterized as "humans who can't stand looking at other humans." He then called the industry "full of otaku."

Miyazaki approaches animation by observing others. In the interview, as Miyazaki sketches, he explains he's able to create art because he spends time watching others. "Whether you can draw like this or not, being able to think up this kind of design, depends on whether or not you can say to yourself, 'Oh, yeah, girls like this exist in real life.'"

With plenty of anime portraying characters without development or capability of change and agency, Miyazaki has a point. In order to create compelling stories and characters, a person needs to both have well-rounded experiences and meet different people.

Had to expect such plots when dealing with parodic comedies of Scary Movie 5 caliber. Yes, Psycho Pass is more like a parody on cyberpunk media as a whole and each. Though, other than "Immershun shatter" moments, pretty good and watchable for an anime.

Not everything needs to be completely realistic or immersive, I'm not one of those immersion freaks, but when we're talking about the main plot...
I am trashing animes in general, not only Psycho Pass.

I'm saying that in most animes, instead of having a story with characters that reflect real human beings, these characters reflect instead what otakus think are real human interactions. Instead of having a romance like real life or at least like the realistic versions we got in movies, female anime characters just keep lusting for the main protagonist cock, all the time, 90% of todays animes are hentai harem shit disguised as "normal" animes, not to mention the overeaction most characters have to normal situations.

Mature anime is dead because of this.

Oh I see Lisbeth_Salander
To be completely honest with you.
I haven't watch Ergo Proxy yet, but I did watch Psycho-Pass.
I liked it enough, that got me interested in the material that was made of.
I do understand the disgust of what anime as come to be now days, we are not longer have anime like...
Monster,Mobile Police Patlabor,Blue Gender,Perfect Blue,Tokyo Godfather,Paprika,Serial Experiment Lian,Memories,Jihn Roh and Millennium Actress

I really din't knew what the word "Otaku" meant (until a sec ago) had to google it. I am not a 100% a local or a regular of anime fan of whatnot, but the few animes I have watch has been very interesting (I haven't had a miss in that regard) enough for me to recommend those two at least, fact being about the topic and theme this topic is about. Since the movies from Psycho-Pass where very, very interesting enough to really play with the material, perhaps not to a perfect point like the 80's animes that had a more psychedelic thriller influence between the reality present with the decade and with what they use to "play around" with ideas of cyber economy and so forth with the decade. And with what is now.

Bubblegum Crisis 2034 and Ghost in the Shell should be in that list and anyone's list with regards to Cyberpunk.....*Dreams of modding in Hardsuits from BGC into 2077* Also, you should watch Ergo Proxy, especially for the atmosphere of the series. Also I personally have no disgust for "what anime has come to be now days" because of the different genres and styles of anime. Certain anime are not for everyone and some are, some are meant for children, some are for teens, young adults and etc. Besides the fact there has always been crappy and horrible anime and there has always been the uguu kawaii and moe anime characters. The "Cutting Edge Japanimation" OVAs that flooded World markets back in the 90s were not what general anime was like.

Expand your horizon because that's a gross and very disgusting over-generalization of anime and reminds me of a guy I knew who thought that all anime was porn. Besides the fact harem animes have been around for a long time, Ranma 1/2 written by a woman.

Both animes you mentioned are not todays anime. There are great animes that are old, and the ones you mentioned belong to this category. You say there are different types of animes these days, but I disagree. Those different types are starting to disappear.

You're telling me its 75%?

Miyazaki is full of himself and keeps churning out Studio Ghibli movies even though he keeps going on about how much he hates anime.

He is full of himself therefore he is wrong? What about what he said? Do you have no opinions about that?

I really like that actor, too. He was in "The Killing", another fantastic show (but not cyberpunk). I think I'll take a look at that.

I've never seen anything Ghost in the Shell-related, anybody have any suggestions on where to start?
