What is GWENT?

GWENT is a multiplayer competitive card game developed by CD PROJEKT RED — creators of The Witcher series of games.

In GWENT: The Witcher Card Game, gamers clash with their friends in fast-paced duels that combine bluffing, on-the-fly decision making and careful deck construction. The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds, as players unleash their hand by slinging spells and diverse units with special abilities and use clever tricks to deceive their opponents.

You can read more about the game HERE.

Basic information

GWENT is a competitive card game, meaning you’ll need a deck to play. We’ve prepared a handful of basic ones for you to start with, but you can make your own at any time! We'll get to that in next section, but before we do, let’s talk about how to play the game.

At the start of the match you will draw 10 cards from your deck. You can redraw up to 3 cards before the first round begins — this is known as mulligan. After the first round you will draw 2 additional cards and will be able to redraw 1 of the cards you have in your hand. After the second round you will draw 1 more card and, once again, you will be able to redraw 1 of your cards.

Winning the first round doesn't mean you'll win the match! In order to come out victorious out of a game of GWENT, you need to win 2 out of 3 rounds, so make sure to save some cards for the second and the third rounds! Remember that you can pass at any moment during a round. You can even lose a round on purpose to try and deceive your opponent, or gain card advantage.

To win a round, you need to have higher score than your opponent. Placing unit cards from your hand on your side of the battlefield will increase your score. Some cards and unit abilities can increase the strength of your army, both on the board, as well as in your hand. However, there are those that can also reduce it. If the card's strength is brought down to 0, it will be removed from the battlefield and will appear in graveyard.

If you want to know more, GWENT comes equipped with a handy in-game tutorial, as well as a series of challenges that’ll help you perfect your skills. You’ll find them in the SINGLEPLAYER tab of the main menu, in the CHALLENGES section:

Deck building

You can create a deck using the DECK BUILDER available from the CARDS tab in the main menu. You can also edit or delete your existing decks, including the ones you start the game with.

The first thing you need to do when creating a new deck is select a faction. There are five factions in the game and each one plays and feels different.
Monsters
The world of The Witcher is infested with unspeakable horrors and savage beasts. Most of them are gathered in the fearsome Monsters faction. Driven by their primal instincts, these creatures will do anything to gain more strength, including consuming their own kin.

Nilfgaard
Nilfgaard is a powerful realm in the far south that arose through conquest of nearby kingdoms. More than any other GWENT faction, the Nilfgaardian Empire relies on diplomacy and subterfuge to disrupt enemy strategies and enact its own.

Northern Realms
Representing the combined forces of Temeria, Redania and Kaedwen, the Northern Realms are proud kingdoms, united by their desire for independence. With near unmatched numbers and some of the deadliest engines of war, they are truly a force to be reckoned with.

Scoia'tael
The Scoia'tael are elven and dwarven rebels fighting against the discrimination of non-humans. Their forces are supremely agile, able to outmaneuver their foes on the battlefield and as befits guerilla fighters — they’re masters of ambushes and traps.

Skellige
Skelligers are proud folk, known to have the deepest respect for their long-standing traditions and their fellow clansmen. Their warriors embrace the glory of battle, knowing their priestesses can summon departed heroes from the grave to fight another day, stronger than ever.

Whether you choose to play as the cunning Nilfgaardian Empire, nightmarish Monsters, proud Skellige, mighty Northern Realms, or shadowy Scoia’tael, you can always create your own playstyle within a faction.

After choosing a faction, you will need to select a leader. At the beginning you will have only 1 leader for each faction. You can unlock more by completing challenges (CHALLENGES can be found in the SINGLEPLAYER tab of the main menu), or by crafting them in the CARD COLLECTION.

Selecting a leader will take you to the deck editor. This is where you’ll be able to add and remove cards to and from your deck. Remember that you can use filters to display the specific cards you're interested in.

Your deck needs to have between 25 and 40 cards in total. You can use any unlocked card from your card collection as long as it belongs to the faction you’re building a deck for, or is a neutral card.

Keep in mind that there are certain requirement for a deck to be valid:
  • you can only use up to 4 gold cards in a deck
  • you can only use up to 6 silver cards in a deck
  • there can only be 1 copy of each gold or silver card in a deck
  • you can only use up to 3 copies of a bronze card, even if some have multiple art variants
When creating a deck, try to pick cards that you think will work well together — a good combo increases your chances of defeating an opponent. Plus it feels great when you pull one off!

If you don’t have an idea for a deck, or need some help creating one that fits your playstyle, you can always visit our friends over at GwentDB for some inspiration.

Card collection

There are hundreds of cards in GWENT for you to discover — ollecting them will allow you to create more and more decks. You can get additional cards for you collection from opening Card Kegs, as a reward for winning rounds and leveling up, as well as by crafting them using Scraps.

There’s a variety of ways you can get ahold of Card Kegs — leveling and ranking up, as well as completing a Ranked Play season. You can also get them from Shupe the Troll’s shop by spending your hard earned gold for playing the game. A single Card Keg costs 100 gold and will give you 5 cards in total, with at least one guaranteed to be Rare or better.

Once you reach level 3, you will be able to start milling your extra cards — destroying them and turning them into scraps which you can then use to create new cards. You may be tempted to focus on a single faction and mill all cards from the other ones, however we strongly encourage you try out the different factions before try doing this.

All cards come in two variants: standard, with static art, and premium, with animated and voiced card art. Using Meteorite Powder, a special crafting resource, you can bring any standard card to life. Doing so will consume the standard version of the card, however.

Similarly to Cards, Card Kegs and Gold, resources like Scraps and Meteorite Powder can be obtained as a reward for winning rounds, leveling and ranking up, and for placing on the leaderboards at the end of Ranked Play season.

GWENT lore

GWENT: The Witcher Card Game is set in the world you might know from The Witcher game series created by CD PROJEKT RED as well as on The Witcher novels. You do not need to know anything about The Witcher to enjoy GWENT. Chances are, however, that as you continue playing, you’ll want to know more about this universe, as a vast majority of the cards featured in GWENT have interesting stories behind them.

Would you like to find out How was Vilgefortz Loyal to Nilfgaard?
Or maybe you'd like to see a Summary of The Witcher lore?

If you’ve got any other lore-related topics you’d like to discuss, you can always create a new thread and talk about it with other forum members.

Oh, and speaking of The Witchere lore — don't forget to visit the wikis created by The Witcher community:
