How do I get my weapons back leaving Loredo's house?

How do I get my weapons back leaving Loredo's house?

After I leave Loredo's house Vernon reminds me to pick up my weapons before I leave, but the guards are sleeping on their feet and I can't get them to talk to me or give me my swords back.
Help!

They're in a chest, next to the gate.

I thought so, but I can't get the dialogue that allows me to open the chest/get the weapons

Didn't think there was one... I just grab them from the chest on the way out.
