Can I throw away contracts after I have read them?

So I decided to start TW1EE again and play my way through Blood & Wine. ^^

A question that bothers me now is: When I receive contracts and add them to my questlog, they are still in my inventory. Can I throw them away in order to clean up my inventory or do I need to for fulfilling the quest?

edit: Sorry I forgot to ask about books too: As far as I remember it is totally ok to sell anything after I have read them. Is this right?

Yes, you can throw them away, actually you must because you can't sell the them to merchants.

Yes, once you read a book, you can safely sell it.
