Welcome to GWENT Masters — the official esports series of GWENT: The Witcher Card Game organized by CD PROJEKT RED. Participation in GWENT Masters is free and anyone with access to GWENT: The Witcher Card Game can join in, provided they are aged 18 or over. Participants aged between 13 and 17 must ask their parent or guardian to review and approve the official rules and regulations of GWENT Masters (available here) on their behalf.

Ready to become a GWENT Master? Here’s what you need to know to get started in the new competitive season!

SCHEDULE

[start]
[/start]

[start]

[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]PRO RANK AND MMR[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]The Pro Rank is the highest achievable rank in the game’s standard Ranked Play. It is the entry point for players wishing to join the world of GWENT esports. Each Ranked season lasts 1 calendar month and at the end of each one, the top 200 Pro Rank players are rewarded with Crown Points.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Each game you play with a faction unlocks a portion of its fMMR. To unlock 100% of a faction’s fMMR, a player needs to complete at least 25 games with that faction. Similarly, playing 20 games will only unlock 80%, and so on.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Though your current overall and faction MMRs will constantly shift depending on the results and amount of matches you play, your ranking placement will be based on the highest overall MMR you have achieved during the Ranked Season. This is called ‘peak MMR’. For example, if you are ranked 3rd with 8200 MMR at any point in a season and lose a number of games, causing your current overall MMR to drop significantly, you will remain ranked 3rd until the end of that season — unless another player surpasses your overall peak MMR of 8200.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]The Pro Rank rating is global and takes into account players participating in Ranked Play across all regions GWENT is currently available in. After a Ranked Season ends, all MMR is reset. The top 500 Pro Rank players will retain their top positions, while other players will be demoted to rank 3, but will still be able to climb back next season and join the race immediately.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Players can check their ranking, as well as their global MMR, at any time on the Rankings page. Additionally, the distribution of fMMR between different factions will be visible in-game via a player’s profile.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]CROWN POINTS[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Throughout GWENT Masters, players will be competing for Crown Points. These are used to reward the best GWENT players for their achievements during GWENT Masters — as well as determine participants of the Season 2 Final event (World Masters) in December 2020.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Players will receive Crown Points for placing in:[/start]

[start]
  • the top 200 of the Pro Rank at the end of each season
  • official GWENT Open tournaments organized by CD PROJEKT RED
  • licensed GWENT tournaments not organized by CD PROJEKT RED
[/start]

[start]Starting with January’s Ranked Season, and spanning up until September 2020, players who finish in the top 200 of the Pro Rank leaderboard will receive Crown points according to their placement. [/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]

[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Contrary to the previous season, Crown points will no longer give players direct invitations to GWENT Open tournaments, but they still will be useful in the long run. Players with the most Crown Points will be invited to the World Masters event in December 2020, along with the winners of the 4 GWENT Open tournaments. [/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]ONLINE QUALIFIERS[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Each month (from February to September) the top 16 and top 64 players from the Pro Rank leaderboards of the previous month will be invited to play in online qualifiers leading to the closest GWENT Open. For example, based on January 2020 (Season of The Wolf) Pro Rank standings, participants of 2 Online Qualifiers in February 2020 will be selected. [/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]The 1st online qualifier will be held monthly for the top 16 players in the Pro Rank leaderboard of the previous month. The format of this tournament will be double elimination. Winners of both lower and higher brackets will reserve their spot at the closest upcoming GWENT Open tournament. The 14 players who do not qualify in the 1st online qualifier will be able to try again in the 2nd online qualifier in the same month.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]The 2nd online qualifier will be held monthly for the top 64 players in the Pro Rank leaderboard of the previous month. The format of this tournament will consist of 2 stages: [/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Day 1 – Swiss system for top 64 players (6 rounds)[/start]

[start]Day 2 – Double elimination system for top 16 players based on Day 1 results.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Winners of both lower and higher brackets will reserve their spot at the closest upcoming GWENT Open tournament.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]The official rulesets of online qualifiers, their schedule, and other important details will be communicated in advance before each tournament of that type. [/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]OPEN[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]GWENT Open is the main type of the official GWENT Masters tournaments. Each GWENT Open event will see a total of 8 participants:[/start]

[start]
  • 4 finalists of 2 Online Qualifiers held 1 month prior to GWENT Open
  • 4 finalists of 2 Online Qualifiers held 2 months prior to GWENT Open
[/start]

[start]Example: If a GWENT Open is held in April 2020, it will comprise of 4 finalists of 2 online qualifiers held in February 2020 and 4 finalists of 2 online qualifiers held in March 2020.[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]There will be a total of 4 GWENT Open events during a GWENT Masters series, with each one offering a 10 000 US dollars base prize pool, as well as a guaranteed spot in the upcoming World Masters event for the winner. All other participants will also receive Crown Points for placing as follows:[/start]

[start]
  • 2nd place – 10 CP
  • 3rd-4th place – 5 CP
  • 5th-8th place – 1 CP
[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]WORLD MASTERS[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]The season will conclude with the GWENT World Masters — the ultimate tier of official tournaments organized by CD PROJEKT RED. A total of 8 players will compete in this grand finale tournament from among:[/start]

[start]
  • up to 4 winners of previous Open events
  • up to 7 players with the most Crown Points accumulated over the Ranked Seasons leading up to GWENT World Masters.
[/start]

[start]The total prize pool of the GWENT World Masters will be at least 50 000 US dollars prize pool. [/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]PRIZE POOLS[/start]

[start]

The offline GWENT Masters tournaments organized by CD PROJEKT RED each have a different base prize pool:
  • GWENT Open – 10 000 USD
  • Quarterfinal match stake – 500 USD
  • Semifinal match stake – 1000 USD
  • Final match stake – 1000 USD
  • Additionally, each participant receives 500 USD, and the winner 1000 USD
[/start]

[start]
  • GWENT World Masters – 50 000 USD
  • Base prize pool distribution TBA
How much prize money a participant receives depends on the result of the match. For example, during a quarterfinal match of a GWENT Open tournament the participants will be competing for 500 USD. If the overall match result is 3:0, the winner will receive 500 USD and the loser will receive 0 USD, if it would be 3:1 the winner gets 375 USD and the loser gets 125 USD, if it would be 3:2 the winner gets 300 USD and the loser gets 200 USD.

Additionally, with Season 2 we’d like to give the most devoted GWENT Masters fans the ability to contribute to the prize pool of their favorite competition. Prior to each GWENT Open, and the 2020 World Masters, we will place special offers on select items in Shupe’s shop. Each purchase of such items will contribute the percentage of revenue to the prize pool and will be distributed equally between all participants. We’ll be sharing more information on this later, so stay tuned for updates!

[start]LICENSED TOURNAMENTS[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]Third-party partners can apply for a license from CD PROJEKT RED to host their own GWENT tournaments. They will be required to follow the official conduct and ruleset of GWENT Masters, with any additional rules on top needed to be approved by CD PROJEKT RED. Contrary to the previous season, there is no minimum required cash prize for this type of tournament. In addition to Crown Points rewards for placing, CD PROJEKT may provide additional spots in 64-players Online Qualifiers for the tournament winners — the exact amount of Crown points and/or additional qualification rewards will be determined between the tournament’s organizer and CD PROJEKT RED. Each licensed tournament should have open qualifiers to select participants, and can be held either on-site, or online. [/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]
[/start]

[start]COMMUNITY TOURNAMENTS[/start]

[start]These are tournaments organized by the player community. The prize pool of these events should not exceed 10 000 US dollars and getting a license from CD PROJEKT RED will not be necessary to organize one. Community tournaments can take place online, as well as on-site. However, players will not receive Crown Points for either participating or placing in them.[/start]

After the season ends will you still be able to get the Imlerith avatar if you didn't reach top 1000 this season? I really wanna know before I quit my life trying to get that thing lol.

Imlerith avatar is one of the rewards for the current season, however, we may consider making it available in the future.

Do you guys plan on adding more wallpapers to the current media? Specifically some scenes from the cinematic? I love the shot of Geralt and Ciri playing gwent just before the nilfs barge in :)

We'll be definitely adding more wallpapers in the future. :)

My doubt is the following - Let's say that I ended the season with 4200 points, that means I'll carry over 1400 to the next one, which corresponds to being at rank 9. Will I automatically receive the rewards from the previous and current ranks? Those would be 9 Kegs, 275 Scraps and 100 Powder.

Yes, you will receive the rank-up rewards with the start of the season, according to your rank. :)

Hey guys.

1. Have you thought about a quest/task system for Gwent, where you get rewards after completing them?

2. Will you be adding trophies/achievements to the final release?

3. Have you considered adding rewards for playing the practice mode? Maybe a tiny amount but something to earn even when not playing online.

We are not planning any of these at the moment.

Why is that some players never get anything then white card as random daily reward (instead 15 ore or scraps or meteor). I saw on yt and streamers that they get even epic or legendary there. But for me and i won like hundreds of them i never even won a rare one. Played high level in closed and now lvl 40 in open and still i always won white cards. Even if chances of getting anything different of white card are low, it's almost impossible to not won even rare so far, RNG can't be so brutal as well.

Rewards are completely random.

Are you thinking to give us the option to change our in-game username?

Ranked Play season ending August 27th — a message from Paweł Burza

Hey everyone!

A lot of you have been asking us what’s up with the Ranked Play season taking so long to conclude, seeing as how we’ve previously said that each one would be around 2 months.

Well, we’re nearly there and I’m here to give you a date — August 27th, 2017 at midnight CEST. That means you’ve still got some time to work on your ranking, and there’s a couple of good reasons why you should.

First one is — rewards! The end of the season will earn the best players exclusive frames and titles, as well as a unique avatar showing Imlerith without his iconic helmet (which is a rare sight indeed, as he doesn’t go out without it very often).

Secondly, the ranking points you worked so hard to earn during the Ranked Play season — you’ll be taking ⅓ of them with you into the next one, which will determine the rank you start it with.

There’s one more for those of you crazy about competitive GWENT. Though I can’t go into details just yet, I’ll say this — we’ll be introducing a new ladder type, where you’ll need to be above 4200 ranking points at the end of this season to join (if you reached rank 20 or 21 regardless of your standing at the end of the season you will get access to the new ladder). Watch this space around gamescom for more info and keep ranking up.

As always, I would like to thank for your ongoing support. It’s you, the community what makes GWENT such a great game. Stay awesome, everyone!

I have 2 questions to ask.

1) Can you give an estimated for release of the next patch? Not specifics, just days or weeks.

2) Do you plan on changing Reaver Hunter because the 3rd round Reaver/ Henselt combo is almost impossible to beat, especially if they threw operator to add another to their deck?

Thanks in advance for you response.

Love the game and Love the way you guys keep up with your players and fan base. Excellent work all around!

1) Soon ;) On a serious note - at the moment I cannot tell you any details. We'll announce this information as soon as we can.

2) Yes, we are investigating the Reaver Hunter and we are looking for a way to change how it works.

Hi there.

Will there be a chance to get loc. files or help somehow with translation?

I don't want to mess about with game files and my knowledge about this is very limited, I can't edit en-us file, but I'd like to see (or even contribute to) Czech translation.

We appreciate your enthusiasm and we're happy to hear you'd like to help out, but at the moment we are not planning to localise the game into other languages. It's possible we may consider adding them in the future.

Gwent cards — how they come to life

No denying it by now — GWENT: The Witcher Card Game is elaborate as games go… and wonderfully so! But with all those bells and whistles and snazzy effects in front of you, it’s sometimes easy to forget just how many souls contribute to making the title, how much pure skill they put into crafting all the elements of the game and every darn card! Already GWENT boasts a collection of over 300 of them — and that number’s due to grow! So, how do we come up with the names, appearances and mechanics for GWENT cards?

Narrative designers are the first to step up and choose the characters, spells or scenes for a given card. The concept they put forward has to blend seamlessly with the universe of The Witcher — for it’s in this world that all GWENT events transpire. Take the Succubus: followers of Geralt of Rivia’s adventures are sure to recognize this she-beast and the Monster faction as a whole — one of five in GWENT. But while this particular character was something of a no-brainer for the faction, the challenge was to design it with a mechanic that would also make sense both in the context of the world and in terms of the game’s balance.

That’s where gameplay designers come in. They figure out, then tweak, then retweak each card’s role in the game, determining unit type, strength or special abilities. Before dropping a card in the game, however, they often test it out on paper first, doing calculations, comparing its mechanic to other cards and card classes — anything and everything to make sure each new card adds excitement and remains balanced in every battle it gets thrown into. So the Succubus wound up a gold card — tricky to knock off the battlefield. What’s more, you can play it as both an ally and as a disloyal unit, in which case its strength is added to the opponent’s score in return for its special power — sending the enemy’s strongest unit on the battlefield over to your side. Deployed at the right instant, the Succubus can translate into a tantalizing endgame.

The designers eventually put all their ideas in a document that explains the card’s name, how it’ll work in the game, who or what it depicts, the stories and emotions it evokes and brings to the table. All this information gets sent to artists who run with it till they’ve crafted a single-frame image that — believe it or not — tells a small but whole tale. Naturally, this is a process in itself, entailing the production of numerous sketches that place a character or object in different settings and situations, in varying garb. Step by step, illustrators develop and refine the best sketches, adding more layers and details all the while. Thus a card’s base form is born!

However, we’re out to give GWENT players more than still pictures. So each and every card gets its animated counterpart. Based on the completed 2D illustrations, 3D artists produce three-dimensional images that constitute a sort of bas-relief, a model. In something of a reversal of the way things are normally done, where detailed textures are added to existing 3D models, our approach grants GWENT its unique look and feel while giving our artists creative opportunities aplenty.

Skeletons are then inserted into the 3D models. Animators use these to get things moving. GWENT’s animated premium cards offer some of the most dynamic scenes to be found in the wide world of collectible card games. And they’re also a challenge to make. After all, with some cards, if the action was to be “natural,” characters or objects would quickly move out of frame. Leave it to our skilled animators to find creative work-arounds. In some instances, as with Ciri’s card, they opted to stop time during the final moments of the scene. In others, such as the dynamic Tibor Eggebracht, animators used the scene as set by illustrators to create compelling, infinite loops. And when it came to Roach’s card… well, we all knew taming that beast would be a challenge.

But it doesn’t end with movement. Many of the cards feature fiery explosions, thrilling magic spells and spectacular weather effects, all brought to life by our VFX artists. These artists are also behind the effects that materialize when cards are created and deployed, as well as when they take any damage. And their sense of humor often shines through — as with Priscilla, who becomes a wild disco queen on her animated card. Sound designers also play their part in upping the mood by giving the depicted characters voices and adding many other sound effects.

Of course, all this is just for the card fronts – yet there’s much, much more behind and around them! Our UI artists design the cards’ decorative frames, the icons different units feature, and many other visual elements on the battlefield and in the menus. For instance, these 2D artists deal with the game board’s texture and the backs of the faction cards. Our programmers then tie all these pieces together, the sumptuous cards included, with thousands of lines of code. Finally, the peeps in the QA department catch any errors or problems, ultimately making sure the whole thing runs like a sweet dream.

“Whew,” you might say, “that was an earful.” But GWENT’s story doesn’t stop there. ‘Cause remember, what was once a side-show and additional attraction in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is its own independent production today, a production that happens to be one of the largest Unity-made games in Europe. All that said, we have to admit that we’re not even close to done: we’re continuing to add new elements to GWENT. Among them, the team behind the story of The Witcher 3 is working on narrative campaigns that’ll take players back into the depths of the world of The Witcher.

Lastly, as the game continues to grow, our team continues to grow along with it. So if you're interested in game development and want to work with us on GWENT, visit our website today!

In deed, a unit (Enemy) needs to be present on the board in order to get copied by Summoning Circle, this is as designed. It may become clearer if one looks up the keyword of the term Enemy.

Thank you for sharing your feedback concerning the clarity of the card's ability, we really appreciate it.

So, this chick that's been hanging around me a bit lately, my wife, doesn't like me playing Gwent... Super Mario is ok though, for some reason..

As you can imagine it's quite difficult to climb or even play when you're in this situation.

She's pretty hot too, so don't really want to have her knocked off.... yet

Anyway, my question is;

Are any of you in a similar situation and do you have a strategy to get rid of them for a while so you can play? even if not,
Do you have any suggestions that can possibly help with my predicament? i.e. tricking or distracting them for long enough to play a few games, etc..

At the moment she thinks I've become more romantic lately because i keep running her baths, like every 2 hours, but it's just so she leaves me alone to play for 30-40 mins :)

I think as a collective, the community can come up with suggestions to help people like me ;( (surely I'm not the only one)

Should i have posted this in Tech Support?

To clarify I mean the golds that give you a copy of scorch or simply have it's effect.

I know it "targets the entire board" but that's not much of a downside because (assuming you're not a moron) you don't put them in decks with high attack cards and you're golden. I'm really tired of facing a scorch that also gives 10/8/12 value.

Igni's annoying but is only worth 4 and can be played around. Most of the time. I still hate Igni though.

Scorch is a card that hasn't changed in a long time, the bigger problem here is carryover and buffing one unit multiple times with scorch you can interact with this plan.

Apologies if these fall foul of the no suggestions rule but I'm not sure I can ask these questions without inadvertently making them sound like suggestions. Anyways, here goes:

1. Are there any plans to alter the Renew gold card? The reason I ask is that I remember from one of the dev videos CDPR mentioning that you don't want players being able to use gold cards that aren't their own. The most recent change has largely helped with that but if you play a disloyal gold and your opponent has renew, they can still play it themselves whereas you cannot if you have renew. Is this an issue you are looking to change?

2. Are there any plans to make meteorite powder slightly easier to come by? I think I'm level 31 / rank 18 now and apart from the clear skies transmute in the tutorial, I've only been able to transmute maybe 8 cards so far. The premium cards were a great introduction and it's fun to be able to upgrade an existing card in this manner but in my experience, being able to transmute a card is a rare occasion which is a bit of a shame.

Anyways, thanks for all the effort you folks have previously and continue to put into the game. I'm looking forward to future developments you will bring us. Cheers.

1. That's an interesting suggestion and we'll look into it. However at the moment we are not planning to change how "Renew" works.

2. No, we are not planning to make any changes to meteorite powder.
