Crash to Desktop

Enhanced Edition crashes to desktop with no error or warning upon: a)reaching combat training in the tutorial, or b)attempting to start a new game (skipping tutorial).

I have tried some of the fixes found on this and other forums such as: 1) updating my drivers [sound and video] 2) lowering graphics settings including Texture Memory Size.

None of this has worked. 70% of the reason I built this computer was to play Witcher 2: EE... Please for the love of god someone help me make this work.

My specs are:

ASUS p8z77-v

i5-3570

Sapphire HD 7850

8G ram

Windows 7 64-bit Home

There is no reason in your PC hardware why TW2 shouldn't work. But the game reportedly crashes for no obvious reason for many people since the upgrade to EE and the following patches... There's probably no easy fix for this. Have you tried reinstalling the game?

Are you overclocking your video card ? If yes then turn down to stock clocks , this would include factory overclocked models as well .

You might try running a memory diagnostics using the builtin analyzer form Microsoft or this one
Memtest 86

I ran a memory diagnostic this morning and found no errors. Also, my card is not OC'ed during my attempts to run TW2..

However, I did get my game copy through Steam, and I have recently read that for some reason "the steam version is crappy". Is there any truth to this? Should I try and obtain a backup copy and re install using that copy?

I may try re-installing with a backup copy from a different source, do you think that would work?

Others run Steam copies with no issues . Have you validated the game cache to make sure you`re not missing any files . Steam>Library>game right click properties and validate game cache If you want you can claim your backup copy from GOG . http://www.gog.com/en/witcher2/backup/

@ embla
System specs please .
win 7 64bit
i5 -> 2,5 GHz
Ram 6 GB
GeForce 8800

low video card :p can be the problem!
Is there an option of turning shadow compleatly off?
(since all until this point went well? )

Which 8800? There were several models of 8800, some of which have just 320MB or 384MB video RAM (the game requires 512MB and is definitely unhappy with much less).
