What if I don’t want play for a punk?!

+
*Sorry for all grammatical and spelling errors, English is not my native language*

I watched a gameplay demo recently and I was a little bit disappointed. It looks like developers are already created detailed main hero instead of me. Main hero acts and dress up like a punk, use foul language, use big and loud guns, use noticeable cyber implants, riding a sport car for a badasses with his punk friend. But what if I don’t want to play for a punk? What if want to play for a character, who want to stay as clean as possible in this city full of dirt. The character which dress up like agent 47 (but not bald), which wears clean and neat clothes, which kills his target quick and clean, which use high-tech military sniper rifles. The character which respects power and authority, not anarchy and rebellion. The character which drives car look like business car but with sport car specs (like BMW M5). The character which use expensive cyber implants, which can’t be distinguished from simple part of bodies, UNTIL YOU TAKE OUT A ****ING CATANA FROM YOUR HAND AND CUT IN HALVES ENEMIES WEAPONS AND MAKE THEM TAKE YOURS CONDITIONS!

What in this case game can afford to me?

In a game called CyberPUNK?

Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction in a futuristic setting that tends to focus on a "combination of lowlife and high tech featuring advanced technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order.

It's a name of whole subgenre, it doesn't mean all in the game should be punks including main hero.

Also this game was based on table top games in which you also could play not only punk.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberpunk_2020

Well, go play Deus Ex :/
You'll be a corporate secret agent that doesn't smoke crack and never asked for it.

Cyberpunk, the game, is mainly about being a punk, an underdog in a ultracapitalistic soon-future.
In the Pnp, you had a lot of choices, but obviously they were forced to shorten it for obvious reason (keeping the whole game logical and balanced).

The essence of Cyberpunk (and the story about them), is about the street, the low wage punks forced to live their life in the crapper and finding a way out of it, so yep, you'll be forced to play a punk.

The character which dress up like agent 47 (but not bald), which wears clean and neat clothes, which kills his target quick and clean, which use high-tech military sniper rifles. The character which respects power and authority, not anarchy and rebellion.

Are you the kind of people who stops at red light when playing GTA?

It's not to being rude or troll, but the Corporate way of life is super restrictive (and even in the corporate tower, every corps are fighting each other for a promotion), it's a shark world, and as it could be fun to live it for a bunch of side missions, it would be super boring as a "single character".

In this world, if you respects power and authority, you're nothing (at best, otherwise, you're dead).
We dunno yet if we'll be able to join corporation, but yeah, doubt having 100hours of game only being a corporate agent doing his shitty job, having a "Shut the fuck up Anderson and get back to work Or I'll fire you!" for every dialog option and never choosing what your game will be like because that fucking corporation control every aspect of your life would be a thrilling experience (but then again, you have Deus Ex if you like to play "catch the ball" with your boss).

What you want to be is pretty much a high end corporate, but if you looked at the gameplay (supposing you don't know much about the lore), the Corp woman clearly says "The Corp got everything it wants in the end, no matter how dirty it may have to be", these guys are the bad guys, you HAVE to play a punk, in cyberpunk, because following order and authority mostly mean you'll be cannon fodder for the corporation, with no choices and as much usefullness than some condom, use once and destroy.

You want to follow power and authority?
Kidnapping, killing people, acting like a freaking nazi and being like "Heh, just doing muh job!" for expanding your corporation's right?
You'd be a puppet sent here and there and not really worth anything since there's 100 people behind you waiting to steal your place (just like the 2 solo bodyguard the Corp has in the gameplay demo, they're just random canon fodder high end corp agent).

That's what working for the big guys is like in Cyberpunk.
You're nothing, you think nothing, do what I tell you to do or you'll end in a garbage can.
And there are no "lol I'll rebel against those nazis", because they own you, even maybe do have placed bombs in your own body, you can't do shit once you're in a corporation (unless you're extracted by another corporation, but they need to NEED you, and that's not an easy thing...)

It's really far from Hitman or Ghost in the Shell.
Motoko, just for taking initiavie as she use to would have been disconnected long ago and replaced by one of the thousands jobless solo that would kill for a corporate job like that.
You'd have to stick to your corp etc...
While I "get" what you're saying about character freedom, playing a corp would be super limiting (just like in Deus Ex, you have a whole world to explore, but you're always limited to Sarrif business, would work the same in Cyberpunk, you'd stick to the corporate place and that's it).
Corp can be fun in the paper RPG because you can imagine a lots of twist, but in a videogame it wouldn't work the same (mostly that the role is based on being a yuppie, a piece of a chain, having a square and repetitive job).
Either you're thinking for yourself in there and won't get far, only the meanest and most "corporate minded" people goes up there, and they're often the worst (reason why they won't give two shit about you if you're in trouble, they'll just fire you, or worse, so corporate knowledge won't slip from your mouth lol)

So to be clear, working for the power in Cyberpunk (as a corporate agent), is as fun as working at Mc Donald and being insulted by Soccer Moms everydays without having much to do against it, so yeah, you can understand why the game won't take that direction, it would be super boring.
(Now, using that super-boring job as a side mission could be fun tho, even some tongue-in-cheek jokes towards Deus Ex, with V being all " I never asked for this..." while doing coffee for the meeting-room and having to do photocopies)

They must have really hit a nerve in you, eh?

Though the direction of the game doesn't indeed have role playing in mind, it wasn't unreasonable to assume that you will have a say in what your character will be in a game that was marketed as an RPG first.

Also, by your logic Bladerunner isn't cyberpunk because Deckard and K aren't punks?

Actually it's even more precise than that: you have to play a mercenary.
Because if having to play a punk was the only restriction, I would not be disapointed about being unable to play a Rockerboy.

I can't lie that as a DLC, that would be really sick.

Do you know that even in the base tabletop RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, you can play a lot of different roles, not just mercenaries?

"Cyberpunk" relate to the genre, to the world, not to everyone living there.

From the Cyberpunk 2020 core book.

So you wanna be a Cyberpunk? Or maybe just look like one?

Before you pitch off your sleep mat and jump in, there are a few things we need to tell you. First of all, the name. Cyberpunk comes from two words. Cyber - from the term cybernetic, or a fusion of flesh and machine technology. Punk - from an early 1980's rock music style that epitomised violence, rebellion and social action in a nihilistic way. The term was popularised in the Pre-Collapse days by a group of writers who specialised in writing science fiction with this kind of techno-melange. Their works featured a streamlined blend of rock, pop, sex, drugs and the highest, hippest technology - usually grafted onto your body somewhere. The archetypical cyberpunk heroes of the 80's ranged from technobarbarians roaming a Postholocaust world, to cyberhipped jet setters with designer bodies.

(background information about the writers perspective from the 80's, speaking directly to us in a time they tried to predict. I would recommend reading it, it's a good read when it comes to lore. It continues on...)

It took about fifteen years for the new tech to catch up with the vision. First, the military started using cybertechnology to create "perfect soldiers" and pilots. Some of the spin-offs led to prosthetic limbs, eyes and other body parts. Organic circuitry led to direct hookups between men and computers. Combined with advanced telecommunications technology and satellite downlinks, the basis for the now planetwide Net, was established. As each new technological advancement slammed into place, a sort of cultural shock set in.

Technoshock: When technology outstrips people's ability to comprehend or fit it into their lives. Suddenly, people freak out. They get irrational; violent. Families shatter; relationships tear apart. People feel helpless in the face of the Universe. Eventually, the whole society grinds to a halt, the victim of a mass psychosis. That's what we now call the Collapse.

There were three major responses to technoshock. The vast majority of people, their lives uprooted and changed by the advancements, sat passively waiting for their leaders to tell them what to do next. One smaller group tried to turn back the clock, founding the basis of what we call the Neo-Luddite movement. The remaining group - they decided to hit the future head-on. With the old 1980's visionary writings as their guide, they established the movement we now call Cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk is also an attitude. You wear the most "in" clothes, know the right people, and follow the right crowds. You plan crimes in the most select clubs and bars; your enemies are Corporate-armies, cyborg bike gangs, power-armoured assassins and computer-wired Netheads. Your weapons are nerve, street smarts, bravado and the Minami 10 smartgun on your hip.

TL;DR: "Cyber - from the term cybernetic, or a fusion of flesh and machine technology. Punk - from an early 1980's rock music style that epitomised violence, rebellion and social action in a nihilistic way. With the old 1980's visionary writings as their guide, they established the movement we now call Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is also an attitude. Your weapons are nerve, street smarts, bravado and the Minami 10 smartgun on your hip."

My point is. Cyberpunk isn't just a genre. It's a lifestyle. You can be a media, rockerboy, solo, netrunner, techie, medtech, media, cop, fixer, nomad, corporate. But, your role does not define you, at the end of the day, you're still cyber, and you're still punk.

Bladerunner is Tech Noir, not Cyberpunk.
While it has the "style" of Cyberpunk, IMO it lacks stuff the Cyberpunk book elabored on it (cybernetics, social decline, etc...).
Robocop IS Cyberpunk, you have ultraviolence, human stories, Corporate business, etc...
Robocop is a Cop, but the whole world has a big "punk" written on it.
Blade Runner, it's more like a nice tale with robots and poetic stuff into a cyberpunk looking world, that's how I feel it.
Cyberpunk isn't much about how it looks but the feel of it, in Robocop you really have that crazy city, that you feel is about to explode, rampant crime, etc..
While in Blade Runner, even the new one, I dunno, it feels more like psychological dark scifi in a future world than Cyberpunk, I wouldn't mind living in Blade Runner's world honnestly, it's not that bad... Robocop's one? Well.... Maybe not....
They barely talk about social or politic stuff, it's all a poetic thing on human and stuff, Post-Cyberpunk maybe, but not "Cyberpunk" at the classic meaning (like Max Headroom that the whole point was to criticize media etc..).
To me Aliens 2 is more Cyberpunk than Blade Runner, you have future tech, corporates agent trying to fuck up the people they sent to a mission, and they all do feel "punk".
Strange Days also, really do link it's scifi feel with some social and politic comment about society's collapse, espace using drugs and police brutality.
Blade Runner, it's about a detective falling in love with a robot, it's not more Cyberpunk than I robot or any movie like that, if you remove the background scenery.
While I do love Blade Runner, I think it was a good inspiration for how Cyberpunk evolved, but it doesn't represent it as a whole (which is just my 2cts anyway).

Now, there are plenty style of cyberpunk (if you compare Gibson/William/Spinrad/Sterling, etc.. way of writting cyberpunk, there's tons of differences), but some stuff remains in the genre

Anyway, back to the Corporate.
There are actual supplements for the Roles in Cyberpunk 2020, and how each corporations behave, and yeah, on paper you can create stuff on the fly to make it interesting (and give a reason for one of your player to BE the corporate), but working it on a videogame would be challenging, they're just the perfect bad guys.
You have a corporation that the CEO just killed another CEO and his daughter (and actually enjoyed doing it) only to get his corporation without having to sign a contract and spend any money, I mean, that's how those guys works in 2020 and most likely in 2077, they went on a Corporate Wars and destroyed blocks of a city just because they can't stand each others.
Imagine how people see them, those massive corporation are monolithic and don't give any credit to people's lives, that's just how they are (and what I tried to flesh out, not having some nerve thing).

Playing a corporate (mostly high-end), in Cyberpunk standards (the RPG, not the genre obviously), would just kill the "player choice", since you're just a tool in the corporate chain, and everything you do etc... is monitored (the "they put bombs in your body" wasn't a joke...).

That's why playing a "Punk" or "Mercenary" is mandatory there, you'll have your choices, lots.
Corporation uses mercenary for their dirty job that they need to do outside of the Corp spectrum.
It lets you works for a corporation, but not having to deal with it's inner-rules.
Working FOR a corporation lets you no choices and a boring and repetitive life, it's just how the game depicts them.
Imagine watching Matrix, but Neo would just be like "Lol, hell no" at Morpheus and would do his job for 1h30 behind his desk, that's kinda how it would feel playing a corporate, it's super strict.

To be a bit more clear, the more you go up the corporate ladder, the more of a psychopath you are (because you stab more and more people in the back to advance yourself; IE why the corp told V "Accept to fuck people over and in a few years you'll be where I am, so yeah, not like they're the nicest people to hang with), if you follow the hierarchy and autority, you'll won't move, if you fuck people's work and put the advantage to yourself (like hiring a bunch of punk to fuck your coworker works and have the spot for yourself), that's how you got up the ladder.

I tried to flesh the feel of it, not because corporate are just assholes, but because the game, as a corporate would just feel as fun as doing photocopies for 3hours, and trying to screw your coworker job, just that, while working as a freelancer actually offer way more freedom as a player.
Also, being that much of a high-end assassin would be limited "lore" wise.
The people up there have most probably stabbed people tougher than you in the back and probably will see you comin' way ahead (they're not there because Daddy promoted them up), and if YOU want to get to the upped ladder, it'll just block you in term of Roleplay (you'll stick to the corp standards and that's it, since you're blocked in the corporate way).

I dunno if it's clear, but that why playing a "punk" is easier, you have more freedom, which doesn't stops you from working for a corporation and liking it, but you keep away from all the "blocked acces" being into a corporation would put to you (goodbye combat zone, drunk night at the afterlife, etc...), you'd life your yuppie life, wich would be kinda limiting given the world's size (and because it's how it works in a corporation, if you don't fit, you don't stay, so they're all like-minded etc..)

I can't lie that as a DLC, that would be really sick.

There are corporate buildings, there are apparently a way to explore those buildings, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be hired in different corporations over the game's story, having to do shitty job from the other side of the mirror (as the corporate asshole), but you'll eventually get back as a punk in the street, just to keep the "freedom" of doing whatever you want.
Like, you won't go work to Militech if you're stuck as an Arasaka corporate, reason why the "punk" role is important, there you can do whatever you want, be a nice guy or thinking that being a corporate dickheads sounds nice (and honnestly, I'd love to do a character like that, American Psycho style)

But being a backstabbing psychopath is fun and underepresented though. A lot of games make us work against authorities but so little let us give in to capitalistic leviathan and all the opportunities and power that comes with it. Playing as corp isn't necessarily sitting in an office 9-5. Corporate intrigue makes for a decent thriller and offers roleplaying opportunities, like would you throw a colleague under a bus to advance the corp ladder or suffer even worse unexpected consequences for not doing so? Moral dilemma of "just doing your job" or fully embracing is a compelling character development tool. Not to mention you can probably contact some rebel edgelords and work with them to sabotage the corp from inside. Or to sabotage the rebels like a true triple agent.

There is a lot of opportunities to make a corp playthrough a fun and challenging roleplaying experience with branching narrative paths.

Seeing as though most of the comments here are fairly negative, in a polite way of course, about the OP's ideas and desires, I'm just gonna say this to back them up a bit.

I think the idea of playing a Corporate or Corporate assassin could make a great game, it all depends on the game makers creative skill, after all. So I see where you're coming from and I disagree with the people saying it would be unavoidably boring and restrictive. However, imho, it'd work much better in a game other than the CP2077 we've been shown.

CP2077 has been created so that people can mix and match several different roles to varying degrees whilst remaining true to the feel of the main story. No matter what the player chooses, it'll fit nicely. Being a character from a walk of life that is so separate from the world/streets/NPC's they have shown so far would require almost entirely different missions and NPC's I imagine.

So whilst I don't think it'd work in this CP game/story, I'm sure it could make a cool game in the CP universe at some point. Maybe an expansion or even a short, mini-story DLC?

EDIT: What the guy above said ;)

Honestly, at this point we really don't know. I think the only semi-confirmed thing (or 100% confirmed?) is that we can't finish the game without installing ANY augment. But that's how the world is like, everyone is using that to their advantage. But for everything else? I'm pretty sure you'll have plenty of freedom to create your own character without any punkish hairstyles - just pick something more neat and clean, I'm sure there will be some crazy hairstyles AND normal, classic hairstyles. Same for the clothing, really. There will most likely be some over-the-top punkish jackets as well as more classic clothing that looks more "normal" in today's standards.

The individual approach to quests and problem solving should always give you the option to approach situation in many different ways. As for the rest, we don't really know what's the story is, who's the bad guy (or which coproration is the bad one, and most importantly WHY) and how to deal with this. If it's an RPG, then you should be able to choose the path to follow your tastes more.

Thing is some ways won't be available just because your role have been chosen for you.
You won't move peoples to an angry mob the way Rockerboys do, nor will you have acces to the ressources of a Corpo.
You'll have to rely on your own, as a simple mercenary.

Kinda similar setup if you had chosen to play any of the GTA games. You can't expect to be a clean character.

However, depending on how this game turns out in similarity to the original RPG game Cyberpunk2020 pertaining to "role" ie class options- you could play a clean Media person or a Rockerboy-can be a popstar for example. That "clean" aspect might just be role play wise however.

I understand why CDPR was uncertain whether or not releasing the gameplay... Looking here and especially in YT gameplay video comments I've seen absurd complains.
