Game crash (image freezing, sound and game still running)

Hi everybody,

I bought the GOTY edition and nothing to add, the game is wonderful but... !
The game don't stop to crash.
My configuration :
Asus Z97 Pro Gamer
Intel i7-4790x
MSI 1070 ti gaming
16 Go DDR3 at 2400 Mhz
Seasonic 650w prime titanium
1 SSD 250 Go Samsung for OS and 1 SSD 500 GO for steam and the games I play.

I'm playing on Steam. I'm on 1.31 version

So the problem is very easy. Without reason (I think), during exploration phase or during the narrative scenes the game crash.
Nothing move, the screen is frozen but I can listen the game running and the sound too.
For exemple, when I figth a Fiellon, the game crash, the screen is frozen but I can continue to fight the ennemy (very hard without the video...).

So I've seen a topic who was speaking about how to solve some problems. Nevertheless, when I see 10 or 15 solutions, I say myself that this is not the good way.

So to try to solve the problem :
- I put my CPU on stock frequency. So the CPU is not OC (it crashes with and without OC)
- I put the GPU on stock frequency. So the GPU is not OC (it crashes with and without OC)
- The bios of the motherboard is the last one (I flash it two weeks ago)
- I uninstall the Geforce experience
- I have the last driver for my 1070 ti
- I don't use mod for W3
- I try 60 fps and unlimited fps without result, same thing for the graphic configuration (I play in ultra)
- I play with fullscreen with 1440p resolution
- The T°C of the CPU increases at 65°C and GPU to 75°C max
- I recover the files via Steam to avoid broken files

So I don't know what to do to avoid this crash.
Note that when it crashes, I just need to tape on esc on my keybord to come back to my desktop.

I think that it's not normal to begin to try 20 solutions to solve the problem. I think that I'm not alone and on Wolfenstein : the new order, there wasn't problem, on anno 2205 too.

When I stress or I bench my PC, everything is okay. The bench don't crash.

The problem is that I find this game totally incredible, the story is so exciting and the crashs break totally the experience...

I precise that sometimes I can play 30 minutes without problem, sometimes 90 minutes, sometimes it crashes every 10 ten minutes. So there's no explication.

So please help me to find a solution to continue to play this game

Thank you in advance for helping.

this evening, I will try to play in windowed mode and I will give you the results...

Most commonly, this is caused by a GPU driver issue. I would recommend rolling back to a driver from ~January of 2017. Newer drivers can easily introduce issues with games that were working perfectly fine under older drivers.

This could also be an issue. Only 1080p resolutions and below are officially supported on PC. Especially if you are downsampling 2K/4K resolutions on a 1080p monitor, that could be creating issues in the GPU. This would be my second step.

Third suggestion for now is to ensure the game has not been installed under Program Files or Program Files(x86) -- or any other protected directories. Use this link for moving an existing Steam installation. Put it on the root of your drive or a folder of your own creation. So: C:\Steam\... or C:\MyGamesnStuff\Steam\...

Lastly, anti-virus and other security software. Be sure that the entire Steam folder and ...Documents\The Witcher 3\... have been added to the exceptions list of any anti-virus, firewall, file protection you may be using. If not, try completely disabling such security software (which may mean uninstalling it). Aggressive anti-virus and gaming will very commonly result in significant issues.

Let us know how it goes!

1070 ti should hold 2k with ultra details with 0 problems, tbh...supported or not....

GPU driver would be my guess as well.
Clean installing an older driver (there are guides on the web on how to do this) might solve the problem.

If it doesn't, check if your BIOS is up to date, and if it isn't, make it.

One question: did you upgrade your gpu recently?

The 1000 series was built with 2K /4K in mind I think, so I imagine it would get at least decent results. (On my 980 ti, I regularly drop into the 20's when I tried bumping past 1920x1080.) A lot of it has to do with the system config, though.

Never know until we try! (I can't wait until it's standard and we can finally wave good-bye to anti-aliasing!)

I have exactly the same problem. There is no specific time limit when the game can crash, basically, exactly what Maxpoo said:
"I precise that sometimes I can play 30 minutes without problem, sometimes 90 minutes, sometimes it crashes every 10 ten minutes. So there's no explication."

I've tried to delete my mods too, didn't help at all. It's my 6th time completing this awesome masterpiece, and it's the first time I'm experiencing such a problem.

My rig is:
1060 3GB(Crashes with or without OC too)
i5-7600
8GB RAM with 2400MHz.
Game is installed on the HDD, and has an usual path, something like "D:/Games/The Witcher 3"

I'm playing on 1080p and mix of high/ultra settings. Anyways, throttling isnt a problem, I checked it multiple times.

Welcome to the Forums, Klyxa74!

Let's start with the following:

0.) Are you using any mods, or have you ever used any in the past?

1.) Please, ensure all OC is completely disabled while we troubleshoot.

2.) Do a verify / repair through Steam / GOG / Origin. (I believe I'm correct in assuming you're using GOG?)

3.) Add the game to the exceptions list for your anti-virus, firewall, etc.

4.) Set the game's .EXE to "Run as administrator". If using Windows 10, be sure that the Permissions for the game's folder and the ...Documents\The Witcher 3\... folder are set to "Everyone".

What exactly makes you say the installation path is unusual?

0) Yes, I do. And as I said, it doesnt make any difference, if I play with mods or not.

1) I've tried to disable OC too.

2)I'm using Steam, and I've tried both: reinstalling the game and verifying game files.

3)Anti-virus and firewall are disabled

4)Yep, both folders are set to "Everyone". Haven't tried running as an administrator yet.

I didnt say that path is UNusual. Here it is.
D:\Games\SteamGames\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3

Just noticed that game actually creates some crash dumps from time to time. Here is what it says

I guess I've found a fix.
Let me know if it will work for you.

Try to increase Power Limit by using MSI Afterburner.

What I did was:
Increased Power Limit from 100 to 110%
Decreased both Core and Memory Clocks from 160s to 100s.

The only time game crashed today was when I was spamming quicksave like a beast and the cutscene started.

Best-case scenario:

Try updating / rolling back your GPU drivers. You can try searching for some feedback on which Nvidia Reference version seemed to work best between the 1060's and TW3. That might be better than updating, since it's been a while now since TW3 was a focus for new drivers. (I really don't think this is your issue, but it's the simplest fix if it works!)

Better than worst-case scenario:

There's a simple installation goof or file system / security problem. You're not installed to a protected directory, but completely uninstalling the game, manually deleting leftover folders (like the installation directory, ...Documents\The Witcher 3\..., and hidden files / folders in places like AppData) and re-installing it.

[Using mods?] 0) Yes, I do. And as I said, it doesnt make any difference, if I play with mods or not.

This is not true. Once you install a mod, many will leave reference data in your save-state that cannot be removed, even if you remove the mod. One of the most problematic things a player can do is install a mod, save their game, then remove the mod. That might cause no issues, really random issues, or make the save unplayable. Depends on exactly what the mod changes, how it works, and what the player has done in the game up to that point.

I recommend backing up your saves, then remove all mods (uninstall them, do not simply deactivate them), then run a verify / repair using Steam / GOG / Origin. Start a new game, Geralt Level 1 and play through white orchard. Try to break it. Run around like crazy, get into lots of fights, save and reload a whole bunch. Turn the graphics up and down. See if it crashes in that situation. If not, it may be a problem embedded in your save-state.

Right at the top of your crash log, it says:

Build: Not Set [ Compiled Sep 5 2016 ]

This is also indicative of either an installation issue or a mod that has altered the game in a way the vanilla engine doesn't recognize. The "unknown files" that follow are another sign that data is missing, corrupted, or altered in such a way that they can't be found by the engine. If the verify / repair did not rectify the issue...then all of that is pointing to the error existing in your save-state (most likely reference data due to mods). I'm afraid that if the new game works fine, but you continue to receive crashes with the other playthrough...:(

At that point, you'll have three options:

1.) You need to install exactly the same mod setup you were using for the original playthrough. This might mean tracking down the ones you installed and later uninstalled. At that point, it may be possible to fiddle with things until you get it working.

2.) Simply avoid doing the things that make it crash. Or...

Worst-case scenario:

3.) Reinstall and start a new game.

Hi all,

Sorry for no reply. When I test something, I'm waiting one week to improve the stability of the game.

So I've found the solution of my problem.
To be honnest, I've tried everything in all forum without results and there was a last thing I wished to do as the last solution but I think it would be interesting to do it first..

So it's a hardware's problem. It was sure that it wasn't a problem of mod, driver etc...

The problem come from the RAM... Yes, incredible. I have 2 x 8 Gb of 2400 Mhz RAM from kingston Hyper DDR3 and supported by my Z97 Pro Gamer.
So I used the XMP with the 2400 MHz profil. I used the other profil at 2133 MHz.. So down 2400 MHz to 2133 MHz.

And I can say after one week of hard gaming that it solves the problem !

So just need to use the 2400 MHz RAM to 2133 MHz... It doesn't change the performance and probably W3 use a lot the RAM and after a moment, the RAM crash and crash the game.

I add a mod for map and a mod for auto oil (I don't understand why I have to install a mod for this because auto oil changing is something very usefull !!!)

Try this Klyxa74 because you have a 2400 MHz RAM too...

And come back to us to say if it changes something for you or not.

If you were overclocking the RAM from 2133 to 2400, then yes, this may have caused instability, performance issues, and/or crashing. (Overclocking can always cause instability, performance issues, and crashing.)

If, however, you have 2400 GHz RAM, and you have underclocked it to 2133 -- that should not be necessary. Hardware should never need to be underclocked in order to perform stably. That's indicative of some other issue (either hardware, software, OS, BIOS, firmware, voltage, etc.). If this is the case, I recommend getting the PC inspected at a good, custom PC store.

I had the same issue,

My ram was not overclocked at 2666Mhz brought it down to 2133

Stopped crashing

Again, while this may resolve the issue, it can cause other ones. Including damage to your system.

Voltage management is extremely important for a computer. They call the parts "circuit boards" because that's exactly what they are: webs of interconnected parts that will maintain a continuous, electrical circuit. If any part of that web is damaged, then you run into all the lovely, destructive things that can happen when electricity "gets loose":

1.) Overclocking obviously wants to draw more electricity along pathways that were not made to hold that much current. The primary danger here is heat. Unless cooling is significant, the added voltage can weaken / melt parts or (in extreme circumstances) have enough charge to bridge into the open air and ground itself via the first available conduction pathway. (Which should be the internal, metal mounts of your case and into the grounding wire. Sometimes, though, the path of least resistance is to bridge to another part of the mobo or a component. And that's the equivalent of it being hit by a very tiny bolt of lightning. Not hard fry parts outright or start a fire.)

To get around this, most overclocking software will try to automatically manage the "actual" voltage / clock speeds as opposed to your "set" overclocks. To avoid issues, it will throttle things if it detects dangerous levels of heat or voltage for the part. Keyword here is "if". The software can't account for all situations, so overly-aggressive overclocking can still fry a system in a blink.

2.) Underclocking can fail to maintain the current throughout the circuit. If that happens, the system may suffer a loss of power to a critical area and completely cut out. This is very different than an emergency shutdown, which cuts power to the whole system simultaneously. When this type of break in the voltage happens, it's the equivalent of sending a whole bunch of "off" signals to one part of the computer. Other parts may continue functioning correctly, and it can cause a serious interruption of the system's functions. While it's often nothing more than a hang or crash, it's also possible to wind up with a totally destroyed file system, corrupted BIOS, or permanently bad sectors in RAM or hard drives.

If underclocking is solving your stability issues, this is normally indicative of one of two things: a.) either the BIOS / UEFI settings managing the voltage for your RAM are incorrectly set, or b.) the RAM used is not actually compatible with your motherboard. I've seen both situations crop up here and there, and both are very simple fixes once the problem is known. More rare would be some form of hardware damage or manufacturing error. If that's the case, you'll likely see the problem return after a while even if the underclocking tweak works for now.

_______________

So, best bet is always to run computer hardware the way it was designed: default clock speeds with standard voltage settings. Instability in that situation means there's a more serious underlying problem. Leaving such issues unaddressed is rolling dice minute by minute. Eventually, it will come up snake-eyes.

[...]I have already encountered you on these forums and most of the times your advice is not correct.

This issue is happening only in witcher 3

[...]I have the feeling you will not come up with any solution, and I can't read through a wall of text again

Hi
I never had this problem in my playthroughs before but yesterday i reinstalled the game and this time i encountered this problem: the screen freezes and sound continues.
( i have a GTX 760 and i always overclock my GPU with MSI afterburner)
i reinstalled my graphic driver and did most of solution that people wrote in different forums. non of them worked !

finally i realized the only different thing since my last playthrough beside my GPU driver version was that this time i installed RivaTuner statistics server with msi afterburner to monitor my FPS.

so i uninstalled RivaTuner statistics server and the problem got solved

now i don't know if this works for anyone else but it is definitely worth a try
if you're using MSI afterburner, uninstall RivaTuner statistics server
and i hope this will solve you're problem as it did mine.

UPDATE: IT DIDNT WORK THE PROBLEM GOT BACK AFTER A FEW HOURS

Things like RTSS, Nvidia Inspector, etc. are tools that give users more complete access to GPU functionality. (Things that the default control panels for Nvidia / AMD try to restrict.) It won't be RTSS directly that was causing the issue, but there's no harm in uninstalling it. However, those same tools can be very useful for troubleshooting a whole range of issues with all sorts of different games.

In case you'd like to try installing them again, I'd recommend simply going into RTSS and disabling any game profiles for TW3.

Or, if you're really up for an adventure, you could manually check the profile settings and figure out which one was resulting in the hang.

I fixed the same problem after trying everything I could possibly think of (applying any settings, game reinstall, windows reinstall, downclock, more power to GPU...). The "fix" is to remove Nvidia drivers completely and install 378.78. For AMD users - no idea. Maybe try installing drivers from 2017 too?

While this may technically work, downclocking hardware should never be necessary. If that is a workaround, it's indicative of a more serious problem with your system.

Can you post your specs / Windows version?

Hi. Thank you for your reply, but as my post states above, I fixed Witcher 3 freezes by going to old drivers (older than 4XX.XX, like 399.24). I didn't fix it by underclock. I just tried that before reverting drivers.

I have no problems in any other games. I have no problems in Witcher 3 with 399.24 or below.

My specs are 1080 Ti and i7 6700k.

My system is perfectly stable in any tests and the temps are alright. If something bad happens with 400+ Nvidia drivers and Witcher 3, it's the problem of Witcher 3 and Nvidia drivers :)

I wrote the solution (old drivers) just in case for those people, who may experience the same thing.

It feels only people with GTX 1080 Ti and 400+ drivers have this problem.

This is goody. I still use the 385.69 reference version for my system. And Windows 7. Rolling back drivers (or just never updating them) is perfectly fine. I still recommend updating nothing on a system unless there is a need to do so.

Fudging clock speeds is a generally bad idea, as it can introduce new issues or complicate existing issues. If troubleshooting, the first step should be to return all hardware to factory defaults and leave them that way until the solution or workaround is found. If I do change clock frequency or voltage from factory spec, and that does solve the problem, that's a last-stage step that indicates a much more serious issue with my hardware. (Ideally, we don't ever want to get there. :) )

That's fine. Having an odd issue with a game as huge as TW3 is passingly common. The more complex a game is (or any program), the more likely it will want a very particular operating environment. Having an exclusive problem like this is good -- it means that it's likely all software-related.

Seeing a similar problem crop up in multiple titles is the horror situation we don't want to see. That means the problem is likely system config or a hardware issue.

Coolnesses! Rolling back is the best option. It's possible, however unlikely, that future versions may rectify the issue.

I'll throw out my 2 cents again: if you have it working, don't upgrade the GPU drivers again until there is a reason to do so. I've used the drivers I'm using now since 2016 without issue. Monster Hunter World had a minor issue at one point, which was later patched out, and I rolled back to the 385.69 as soon as it was corrected. Rock-solid version for my system.
