Thoughts on influencers/youtubers being NPCs in the game

+

Are you OK with having youtubers in the game as NPCs and having quests tied to them?

  • Yes.

  • No.

  • Should be smaller easter egg like the farting trolls in Witcher 3.

  • Don't care.

I have no idea who these people are, but I didn't like NPCs having real people's face in death stranding and I don't like it here. I can be fine with main characters being played by famous actors of that increases the acting performance (Rockstar has shown you don't need famous actors but the perfect actor for the role though), but not for random NPCs.

I honestly don't like it, it always feels like a marketing stunt, like in Death Stranding. Sure, Keanu Reeves is beneficial for marketing, too, but he seems like someone who chooses projects when he really believes in them AND he's a good actor. A Mike Pondsmith-cameo is great, too, because it's his world.
But youtubers and influencers: I don't really care and I mostly realize it's some of these people by bad acting, which I don't need in a great game.

Until yesterday I had no idea who Jesse Cox was.

Me neither, and with that, I don't care if they're in either.

If I were intimately acquainted with Youtube culture, then yes, suddenly being reminded of them in game would seriously break my fourth wall and ruin my immersion.
Seeing as how I'm not familiar with any of these people, I wouldn't even know if they were being Cameo'd. I could run into Cox' likeness and it would mean nothing to me. Just another NPC and I wouldn't get the reference.

I mean, there would be limits of course, if they were to suddenly start vlogging their youtube channel in-game and spout a link / pop-up, but I think I'll be fine as long as they don't do that.

That said, aside from Youtube/Influencers, I can totally imagine fourth wall references of any kind, legitimatly ruining people's experience and immersion. It brings me back to the "Should Ciri be in CP77?" discussion and my answer to that would be a no. Same as characters from other TV shows or Intellectual properties that I AM familiar with, not making an appearance since that would ruin my immersion. I want to invest in the world of Cyberpunk and not get drawn out of that by an all too blatant Simpsons or Assassin's Creed reference - if that were ever possible.

Simultaneously, I do think it would depend on how well integrated the cameo/reference is, if it goes with the atmosphere and if it's handled tastefully.
I've read Alice in Wonderland and I've played Batman Arkham City. The Batman property doing this weird thing where one of its villains is a giant Wonderland cameo, actually manages to work since their take on the Mad Hatter fits so well within the Batman universe.
CP77 doing a Deus Ex reference and inviting the artist Grimes to star as Lizzy, makes perfect sense to me!

But yeah, Jesse Cox or whomever Youtube starlet making a cameo feels a bit tacky, even if it doesn't affect me. CDPR has had a small history of doing that though. I thought the Assassin's Creed reference in Witcher 2 was also... badly placed and instantly dated and marred a classic.

I have no clue who any of these influencers are thus i doubt they will break any of my immersion
don't care

I voted don`t care the only one of the three i know is Coh . If by chance i see a YouTuber i know and like i would prob just think cool .Like The Mad Queen who has been a CP fan for ever .

I agree. Dont personally care and Mad Queen should totally be a part of the game.

I also checked some wikipedia. Apparently Mike Pondsmith will also make a cameo. Will be so awesome to see the legendary creator of the pen and paper be in the game his voice is so deep and badassy

I think it was not a great idea, no.

Somewhere between pandering and marketing. Instantly period-dates the game and smashes immersion. There is a certain amount of this from Reeves already, at least he is acting in a specific role, however. And he is an actor.

Not sure where this idea came from.I don't think it's very Cyberpunk. Pretty Corporate, though.

Too bad.

They're a tiny little side quest in a huge game. It kinda sucks that they revealed it but i ultimately don't care.

I don't know any of them so can't recognize them. Not that big of a deal for me as long as they don't have a big role

I couldn't pick out any of them in a lineup if you paid me, so I'll probably never notice.

HOWEVER...

This could seriously come back to bite CDPR in the ass. We've all heard of people getting in scandals ranging from minor to near-apocalyptic when something in their past comes back to haunt them. This could range from racist words or actions in their early social media to allegations of sexual misconduct to even darker things such as being linked to child pornography. Now, I don't know any of these individuals but that's the thing; no one does, really. People only know what these individuals are willing to share, and there's no telling what really lies behind the exterior.

CDPR should be extremely careful or one day we could wake up to news reports of how CDPR is linked to one scandal or another because of one of the "influencers" (God, I hate that word...so fucking pretentious!) they scanned into their game.

The rumor is the youtubers did their own VOs as well. I'm sorry but if this is true, wtf. That is a terrible idea.

To a certain extent its bad. A random dude is unlikely to come up with as impressive voiceacting as trained professionals. On the other hand, Grimes will likely voice Lizzy Wizzy as well as her songs, which will probably be just fine.

Im not one to call it a "terrible idea", its just likely to be bad more often than not. Sometimes such cameos can be pretty good.

I am reminded of Iggy Pop in the Star trek deep space 9 episodes. He was pretty good. Or Stephen Hawking playing himself(a hologram) in Star trek next generation.

ps. I will likely not recognize any of these cameos except maybe Madqueen due to her distinct accent. (unless she speaks her native language and the game translates it with the cyber? Then I would FOR SURE not recognize her)

Ugh... you just reminded me they had Ronda Rousey voice Sonya Blade in MK11. God, she stuck out like a sore thumb compared to everybody else.

I don't even who those two youtubers are and there is going to be a slim chance I will recognize them if I meet them in the game. I didn't even knew who was Chobat and that she voiced the reporter in ME 3. But i thought it was bit weird that the player can romance the reporter. Was that Chobat's idea?

Ok when you say it like that, it does sound like a terrible idea. Hopefully they can remove the character and their and their mission from the game if it happens

So apparently Jesse Cox, Cohcarnage and possibly others are going to be NPCs (likeness and all) in the game, some of them even having their own quests tied to them and I'm curious about what the community thinks about that.

Personally I hate it. Let me make it crystal clear that I have nothing against those people but I feel it's a bit immersion breaking bumping into these types of NPCs. For my personal taste the 3 farting trolls that referenced Angry Joe, Dodger and Jesse Cox was already pushing it a bit (along with the fact that gwent cards used conteporary personalities like Ciri but that's an entirely different discussion) but this feels.... jarring.

One might argue that they have Keanu in there as Silverhand but Keanu is a professional actor, when I watch Matrix I'm not thinking about him I'm thinking about Neo. I'm capable of detaching Keanu from Silverhand if that makes sense. When I bump into Jesse Cox I'm not going to think "oh, this guy's name is Steve (or whatever) and he has a job for me", I'm going to think "why am I running into Jesse Cox in my singleplayer videogame?".

To me the idea seems contradictory with the heavy emphasis on immersion in the other aspects of the game's design. So what gives?
I don't know who those specific people are but this just brings up Jessica Chobot in Mass Effect 3 flashbacks. Horrendous. The difference between a professional actor/VA and some schlub with a microphone is night and day when it comes to acting and some unprofessional cameo stiltedly stumbling through lines of dialogue is just painful and immersion breaking.

I feel that way about Keanu. I hope we can customize him as well as V. I heard somewhere the Johnny's appearance will be customizable. Has anyone else heard this too or just me?
If his appearance is customizable it's probably limited to something like his outfit.

I don’t have a problem with it. Especially since it’s not like they’re actually themselves in the game. They are actual people within the world with small side quests and most people here have admitted that had no one said anything they wouldn’t even have known this was even a thing.
