Can you ignore the main quest and just do side-quests forever?

+
Yes.

If you have not met Johnny, then you can't leave Watson. That is a large area, and there are gigs and side quests, but what you will mainly be doing is playing crime fighter.

Once you meet Johnny, you get the relic failures and visits from Johnny, and in exchange you get to go to the rest of the map. This opens up more gigs and side quests, and of course, tons more crime to fight.

Many of the side quests are gated by progression through the main quest, so without doing the main quest(s) you are limiting your access to content. But once you do the main quest to the point of no return then yes, you should ignore that main quest while you finish off all the rest of the side content.

You can certainly do most all of them first, but unless you do the ones with Panam and Judy I'm pretty sure it limits which endings you can get. And the map does get pretty empty after a while, other than petty crime to break up.

Since there is nothing you can repeat, no meaningful random events, ignoring the main quest will just bring you earlier to the point, where there is nothing left to do. Once you did everything on the map, the game is done.

btw: If you finished the game, you can go back to the map (you will spawn in front of the ember) and just do whatever is left to do, but if you did it all, that's it.

It'll dry up eventually. And some side-quests are locked behind main-quest progression. So it's important to check the map for side-quests / crimes etc after each main-quest is completed.

Once you finish the game, you are asked if you want to load up the game before the final mission. Depending on your choices and path in the final mission(s) you might be rewarded with gear, items, etc.

Note - I haven't tried this after 1.1. It might be as the poster of the thread you linked is right, and it might be a Stradia problem or a savegame problem for that specific player.

On my first full playthrough I did all the side gigs and side character quests to completion before I did Nocturne, as I imagined I wouldn't have chance after (it said point of no return, after all!) On my second playthrough, I'm mostly ignoring side content in favour of rushing the main questline (with the exception of doing Johnny's quests so I can unlock an ending I'm missing) - mainly because this playthrough I've gone shotgun specialisation and the best shotgun in the game is gated behind doing it after completing the main quest and starting again from Nocturne. But yes, you can just ignore the main story quest to a degree, and do all the side content you like, but you will eventually run out of things to do :(

are u sure about that? widow maker the one Nash drops can easily get 1.000.000 dmg with the right perks - can do the gated one that as well?...

Widow maker is a a rifle, right? My guy wants a shotgun :)
should be tech shotgun it fires 6x2 bullets thats why it can reach that dmg with perks and charging ^^
edi:. oh my bad its really a rifle... eh? was sure it is a shotgun... at least it feels like one if u use it...

You could bypass the Act 1 Softlock (Watson on lockdown) by using Freefly mod and crossing over the canals into Japantown or even south into Pacifica or the Badlands.

Some gigs will activate in those areas based upon your Level and Street Cred, but not all.

The video you are linking is indeed a bug. That's not how it's supposed to work. After completing whichever ending you choose, the credits roll and then you should load back to a point just before entering Embers. Not see a black screen and have the credits roll again.

It's not that you are playing after the ending though, you are continuing the game from where you entered Embers. AFAIK there are only a few things that carry over, a few rewards but whatever skill/level progression and loot you get doing the ending is lost. All of the endings are pretty much that, Endings

Definitely should be able to restart from PoNR after whatever ending you got, and can do different endings with the same character to get the different item rewards - my first finish V has the family jacket and Rogue's gun, just wish there was an item from every ending!

This bug is scary, it prevents you from continuing after the main quest is done:
THE GAME IS LITERALLY BROKEN RIGHT NOW. I'VE BEAT THE GAME AND I CAN'T PLAY IT ANYMORE.

So, can you ignore the main quest?

Side quests only?

I'm hoping/betting we see an open world sandbox after the first big DLC drop. Probably paid, but be worthwhile. Bump up the level cap 5 (reality) or 10 (daydreaming) points.

Maybe an arc for after our endings;
-Arasaka, no more Johnny but some mad quest about how they have the tech to save you but are more interested in the experiment that is watching you die.
-Johnny/Solo, V lives is contacted by Alt, has a way to find a body for her and/or Johnny. (Maybe save V's life. Or sacrifice V at end of life for both of the others)
-Johnny/Solo, give Johnny the body. Johnny goes on a mad quest to keep his promise of saving V's life. With Alt or a choice between the two.
-Etc. Could go on for days here.

Whatever might happen is speculation. But that's the usual sandbox game direction and I'd be happy to see Cyberpunk head that way too.

I worry that the devs have painted themselves into a corner. What you described sounds great, but would require completely different storylines and dialogue just for each one.
