High pitched noise

As soon as I launch this game my computer makes a high pitched noise. It sounds like a series of beeps at a very fast speed, think of morse code typing really fast. I have to hit esc three times to by pass the cut scenes and start the game. the game play itself is generally fine except when there is a cut scene or sometimes when I enter or leave an area. How old is your hard drive? If it's making a grinding noise, it might be close to failure... Does it only do it when you play The Witcher?

There's nothing in this game that would be especially hard on the hard drive - are you 100% certain it's coming from the hdd and not the DVD drive?Either way it's probably fine - if it is the hard drive then you probably just need to tighten up the screws holding the drive in place - a small loosening can produce a lot of noise, but it's not damaging your hard drive, don't worry. You can also see if there is some software from your hdd manufacturer to enable a quieter access mode. Finally degragmenting can help too.If it's the DVD drive, make sure both your disk and the drive lens are clear - wipe the disk from inside to out with a clean cloth and some soapy water, then again with fresh water and let it dry. You can get CD lens cleaner disks very cheapy.

I am not certain that it is coming from the HDD. The noise does only happen when playing the witcher its fine when I play WOW. I downloaded the Witcher from the internet so there is no DVD. I did already defrag using windows defrag and at the end the report said one file could not be defraged: "the Witcher". The HDD is about 3 years old. The noise is very loud.

Just a general word of advice: if you have any doubt that there might be a problem with yout hard drive, backup your data immediately. ;)EDIT: ...and from the last post it appears that The Witcher's files might actually be on a damaged portion of your HDD - which would explain the noise. It would be a good idea to backup your other data and scan your disk.

WoW does not use very much memory, wheras The Witcher will use more than the 1gb you have installed. This causes it to use the hard disk as virtual memory and is probably what's causing the thrashing. If you're worried about damaged hard drive sectors, do a full disk check by opening a cmd prompt and typing 'chkdsk /r/f'. This will take a while and may require a reboot.PS did metaboli send you a CD key? If so, register it and you'll get access to some exclusive content :)

For your defrag, the worst tool to do it is the Windows defrag, in the faq, there is a link to JKDefrag that is thousand times more powerful. and free. after your chkdsk... go to the faq here and read the windows maintenance part.... this will help you to, set up your computer for better performance and, making space to have your file written in continuous blocks on your hard drive... Try it, you really wont regret.

I second checking your hard disc for errors immediately and backing up your data. If that noise really comes from your HD, that's not a good sign. No matter the strain you put on a HD, if the drive is working properly it should never ever produce a loud grinding noise. Therefore: Backup your important data, check the HD. Before you do anything else.

I ran CHKDSk and JKDEFRAG and CCleaner and RegScrub. I even caught something I missed I changed the details on my video card to medium as instructed by the Readme Txt. Yet I am still getting that noise. It sounds like a series of beeps speeded up. Or morse code at a fast speed. Or even similar to a modem. Thank you

can you describe in a better way the sound that you are hearing ?? Is it like something that is scratching... Loud, bass sound....

Think you could record or capture the sound?I also noted you got your modem listed as sound devices...__If its onboard simply disable temporarily in the bios or keep it disabled if you are using broadband anyway, unless you use it for something like work.

Lol right, went thru the dxdiag and the modem is set as a sound device.....Strange strange...It could be, or maybe not...The way to be sure of it, can you remove the modem from your system ?

How can I remove the modem. I use an external DSL modem with an ethernet card. Also I do have a handhead recorder how could I attach or send you a copy of the recording.Thanks.

Well you only need to attach it to your next reply. At the bottom of the edit box, you can see "Additional Options..." click on it and you will see the option to attach a file.As for your modem, its not your dsl modem we are talking about. Do you have a card in the back of your computer that has look like a telephone wall plug. I know you have some for your Dsl modem but those are network connectors, phone connectors are smaller in width ! If you do, well this is the modem we are talking about.

Can I attach a dss file or a wav file. I have used a Philips DPM 9360 to make a copy of the sound.

Compress it using ogg vorbis, flac or some freeware mp3 encoder. =)http://www.vorbis.com/http://flac.sourceforge.net/

wav would be preferable !! But send it... if the board doesn't let you attach it, send it to my email !

I am working on trying to send a wav file. I just have to figure out how to move the file from my Philips Speech Exec software to my computer and then to her. BTW the noise does sound like an electrical noise and it is only mostly only during the intro and sometimes during cut scenes, but the game play itself is fine. Thanks

If its a distinct beeping noise like morse code it sounds like it's a warning from youre motherboard, they use a series of beebs as an error message, its a case of checking youre m.b manual to see what it is (please excuse me if you are aware of this)I would be tempted to try a diffrent graphics driver and see if theirs any diffrence if you can't resolve the issue.
