The General Videogame Thread

So since Christmas game sales (Steam, GMG, GOG et cetera) are now over, what did you guys/gals buy/receive?

Just Far Cry 4 (same reason as you, I've no idea if I'm going to play it or not) and I finally got South Park Stick of Truth, which has been on my wishlist since it came out but I wasn't going to get it until it was VERY discounted. I've been playing that for the last few days - fun game, but I get bored if a session is longer than about an hour.

The Talos Principle by Croteam, the developers behind the Serious Sam franchise. Anybody know it? I'm addicted, started playing a few days ago and can't put it down. A logical puzzle game in the guise of Portal. 87 score on Metacritic There's a free public test on Steam, btw, consisting of four puzzle levels.

The only game I bought on sale this Christmas was Child of Light, so my 5-year old daughter and I can play something else than Faster Than Light and...ermmm...Binding of Isaac.

Kingdom come's Dan Vavra on game design

I just watched this video of Dan Vavra (sorry if the name is mispelled) and he talks about some of the problems he (the kingdom come team) and the witcher team had and what solutions they have come up with.

Personally I find it a very interesting subject so I thought I'd post it here. The Witcher is mentioned a few time in the presentation. Around the 1:02:00 mark he talks about a special event and 'teleporting' the required npc's to a locaties. Just a hint of how the open world will work in TW3.

(I'm on my phone so I can't embed a link in this post, and if this is poster I. The wrong section the mods can move it ofc.)

Finally playing as Spain or rather Castile on EU IV, spreading the Catholic word, unexpected inquisitions, subjugating natives, etc..

Fucking invigorating having four areas to keep up with. On th first I have Aragon who is about to become Spain with me. Just forced Naples into a personal union on the Italian front, going to shoot for all of Italy. Then I have northern and Southern South America, letting the Portuguese bro get Brazil. The African front has been the hardest, probably due to recent patches.

And just after installing Naples as my junior partner my heir dies leaving France a hefty looking inheritance. Luckily I found an heir in the womb of a well endowed hand maiden.

Who else approves of this shit? I certainly do!

Never played the original, so I guess this is as good a time as any right?
I've played like every Resident Evil except for the first. I have it on gamecube but never get around to playing it. I'll probably get that, glad it's priced reasonably. I hear you can emulate RE1 on gamecube in HD, I've never tried Gamecube emulation yet though.

Seems the PS4 version is locked to 30FPS and has some frame drops. Wondering how bad the PS3/360 version is now, my friend wants to buy that one. PC isn't capped to 30.

GTA V PC screenshots. Some bad news, maybe a driver on release can improve it. If this is all true anyway. People are saying it was proved Fake but I don't see proof of it yet

• Doesn't really look much better than PS4 version
• Holds 40-50 FPS on i5 4670K @ 3.6 GHz and 970, maxing out all settings except AA
• Described graphics options as "similar to those in GTA IV", you have your view distance slider etc
• There seems to be some mouse acceleration and the key bindings are a little off (while you press "up" to access your phone, after you enter the camera stuff you need to press "c" to exit the mode, which is a little confusing)
• He couldn't try MP yet, but it doesn't seem to do anything differently than PS4/XBO versions, has the same player cap
• The video editor is tons of fun, the same as in IV, you have a ton of songs from the game to choose from, although not all of them
• You can type numbers on your phone with keyboard keys
While the game doesn't really look that better than PS4 version, the crowd&cars density seems to be massively improved
• When he turned all the settings to their lowest value, the game still didn't reach over 60 -> possible 60 FPS lock?
• The game really shines when you use FPS mode with a mouse, but mouse acceleration is there, and there are no easily editable PC config files that he could notice
• He installed it on an SSD, and while the pop-in is still noticeable, it's far less jarring than in the console versions

image looks compressed as hell, but it's fairly good for an open world game. and why would it look better than the ps4 version? both are upgrades of the original version, not of eachother.

40-50 maxed out setting is a relief actually. gta4 still can't hold 40 fps on modern machines at medium setting.
