An interesting slide from that thread:

(source).

100% relevance can be sabotaged by consoles which push for vendor lock-in, but other than that, OpenGL-next has an indisputable advantage. I wonder if Sony will decide to support it on PS4 or not. I bet MS will be strongly against supporting it on Xbox One. At least initially. Let's see if Nadela will live up to his claims that he is going to change Microsoft for the better.

Dan Baker from Oxide Games, one of the designers of DX9, DX10 and HLSL shading language talks about glnext and need to go beyond relying on Microsoft:

Oxide has a strong interest in supporting platforms beyond Windows. Our hope is that Mantle be a call to arms to bring an industrial-strength API to such platforms as SteamOS, Linux, Android and MacOS. The biggest problem for us moving to other platforms is the relative weakness of the graphics software... from a business standpoint, it makes little sense to rely on Microsoft doing the right thing.

GDC2015 will have another presentation on glnext and new generation of GPGU APIs besides the above. See here:
https://www.khronos.org/news/events/gdc-2015

More on the Next Generation of Graphics and Compute API

Neil Trevett | President of The Khronos Group, OpenCL Work Group Chair, VP Mobile Content, NVIDIA
Pierre-Loup Griffais | Developer, Valve Software
Tom Olson | Work Group Chair OpenGL ES, ARM

Take a break from the Moscone crowds and join us at SF Green Space (see map and directions below) for more about this exciting new API, whether you missed the 10:00am session at Moscone or just want to learn more. We’ll have many of the speakers and demos that were presented at the 10:00am session, and we will have plenty of time for Q&A. While you’re here, pick up a reference guide, and more.
You DO NOT need a GDC conference or exhibitor pass to attend, however seating is limited. If the first session is full, come to the encore session at 2:00. Please register for your session below.

Khronos Group registered Vulkan trademark:

Some are already suggesting that it's a new name for glNext and a hint to open Mantle (= volcano).

It's described as:

Computer software, namely application programming interfaces for the purpose of creating, rendering, and displaying 2D and 3D computer graphics; computer software, namely application programming interfaces for the purpose of accessing parallel computing resources; downloadable specifications for the aforementioned goods
