CD Projekt RED published a screenshot of The Witcher 3: Wildly Hunt in UHD to demonstrate the graphical fidelityof the Red engine – and probably also that one still values graphical excellence in Poland. However, the whole visual splendour has a price. On common PC systems the game won't run fluidly on 4k. In that case it needs quite immediately two graphics cards of the kind of a high-end or premium model. The Witcher 3 looks undoubtedly good and may count itself to the (almost) available top games in terms of graphics. But it is not a landmark. For such a title we miss a sufficient amount of pioneering and never seen before (visual) qualities and features yet.

But also with the Poles, not everything is perfect. Thus it was confirmed that players won't be able to influence the draw distance of the RPG. This probably has mainly technical reasons. According to CD Projekt RED most draw distance information is filed directly into the asset. This has certain advantages – especially performance wise, but it also has the disadvantage that they can only offer at most two or three pre-settings, but not a silder bar. It is not confirmed but speculated that CD Projekt RED uses Umbra 3 technology for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The visibility check is virtually "baked" in the asset and streamed instead of being calculated and generated by a runtime environment. This saves performance. Changes in the LOD also mean that the so-called tomb files which contain the information must be provided anew. Obviously that's a fact with which Witcher fans must simply live. The question is now how aggressively CD Projekt RED adjusts the LOD in the final version.

Besides, they confirmed once again that there are currently no plans for DirecX 12. Of course Direct X 12 is ideal for an open world game like The Witcher 3, but the development is already too far and now they concentrate on the finalization of the product as well as the announced additional content. They also don't expect that there will be a patch. DirectX 12 will at the earliest be used for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED's next big game. However, they plan to make modding tools available (for Witcher 3) – and a little faster than the last time.

Interesting information about technial details if they really apply. Might explain why the latest version runs much better than the earlier versions. I hope though that this doesn't mean that we have to live with a lot of pop-ups and less detail in the distance just to have a higher framerate...

Well a mod will change that in worst case scenario lol. But the draw of field will be great I think.

"So we cranked up all different types of configurable graphics options from the grass density to texture, water and terrain details to 'Ultra'. Because in our PC (Intel i7-4790, 16GB RAM) there was also a Geforce GTX 980, we were also able to activate the option "Nvidia Hair Works". The result, to put it lightly, knocked our socks off: In Geralt's face, we saw each skin pore, his long shadow spread in the setting sun like a bed sheet on a dense colorful flower meadow, the breeze made his white hair flutter realistically in the wind."

"It looks amazing"
"Every direction you turned, there was a vast landscape with rich colours and a great attention to detail."

"Visually The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is going to be a showstopper. High-end PCs especially are in for a real treat. What I played at PAX East 2015 was one of the best looking games I’ve ever seen, period."

"you’ll probably be too busy staring at the sunset or the skin on the characters around you, as the graphics are looking stunning thus far"

"I really can’t stress enough just how gorgeous the game looks."
"Vistas go on for miles and the facial animations are the best I’ve seen in a long, long while. They even managed to get the eyes to look right, which is where other games with fantastic character animation and motion capture tend to go wrong and plummet smack dab into the uncanny valley, never to be seen again.

Social Media tends to go on and on about graphics and what it means to be “next gen”, but I’ve never really gotten into the discussion. This was the first time I have ever actively thought about the jump in technology. This is what I have unknowingly hoped that a “next gen” game would look like in 2015. Even the grotesqueness of its violence manages to be beautiful, and that’s not something I ever thought I’d say."

"The first thing that truly stands out about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the game’s visuals. From the moment I sat down with the game, I was blown away by The Witcher 3’s visual fidelity. Older build of the game or not, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is easily the best looking video game I have ever played."

At this point I believe the journalists don't have the power to sway people about graphics anymore. Partly because gamers are highly suspicious of them, partly because all the amount of footage, as well as the downgrade discussions, have set people's minds about whether the game looks good or bad regular (sorry, I can't with a straight face write that it looks bad, even when trying to be neutral about all perspectives). If you're part of those who think the game looks great (like myself), then it's simply nice to have your excitement echoed back.

Yea,. not buying any of it until Ultra is shown.

So far i've seen nothing but excuses on CDPRs part in regards to ultra.

"i-it's not optimized"

"w-we want to surprise the player!"

Until I see Ultra in motion (outside of trailers and screenshots) in the form of a gameplay video with my own eyes, i'm not buying this PR nonsense. Especially from a journalist.

Wasn't the 4K screenshot, posted a few days ago, on Ultra settings?
@Thebull94 I know you said no screenshots or video's but untill release that's all we are going to get.

Yea, i've heard this, where is the screenshot? I'm curious.

Nope. Mix of high and ultra.

Yea, this is all i'm getting. Excuses, console favored marketing and a bunch of PR nonsense that is raising red flags in my head.

I don't like it, not one bit.

So is it today that Q&A with that guy from gamestar who played W3 for two days? It would be pretty cool if someone could translate it here :)
