signs and granates with sheathed swords make more damage

So if i sheat my sword in combat since geralt draws it nearly always himself, i seem to make way more damage with my bombs and their damage over time effects, is this a bug or by design? and if not by design which numbers are the right ones?

Could it be intended to double its str if you have 2 hands to cast signs instead of one?

I have heard people swear that signs are the most dmg possible in game, and others swear its the worst.. This could be why.
