LoL - is Leif an inside joke?

So far, every character referred to as "Leif" - never seen on cam but in context of dialog given to you - has been a victim of stabbing, beating, bleeding to death, killed by wild hunt, etc.

I haven't run across a single Leif character reference in game where the poor guy survives.

Seems like Leif in the Witcher world is the new star trek red shirt.

Don't recall exact name, places, but something along the lines of:
- you meet some interactable minor npc, people you talk to on the way of some quest - and they'll mention someone in their life named Leif - husband, comrade, friend, etc, and how he died

By the 3rd-4th time I remembered hearing about another Leif that had met his untimely death, it seemed to be a LoL pattern in W3. Leif = random dead guy, never a major character, just some background char that got whacked. aka star trek red shirt
