This skill is absolutely worth its skill point. Especially in combination with showing the object's names (in the game options or by pressing ALT) it allows you to collect dozens of alchemical ingredients of all colors within minutes. All you need then is alcohol and grease as bases for potions...

I was confused by the plants, too, because they have no "ring of life points" around their base, and sometimes when I stand close I can't seem to hit them. but if you run away a few feet and then click on the plant's lower part again when the "attack/sword" icon shows up Geralt starts attacking...
