The sword is not to be looted *from* the corpse, it was just laying beside the corpse. I guess if it's not there for you then... for some strange reason, it's just not there :-XEdit: You can still get the sword later in Act V by completing the Dentist's quest.

I think, the game's storyline is closely related to (if not completely) the novel, and therefore any expansions or continuation would only progress along with the novel's storyline.
