It will work if you give only one book to the NPC in each conversation. If you give him two or more books at the same time the quest can't be finished. I tried it twice :)

hi, I had this bug too. I simply took all 5 books back from him then I gave them one after another. It worked on current 1.11 version of the game. Hopefully, it works also for you :)
