I like the fact you don't get your weapons carried over. It adds challenge and makes you think about what you are doing in combat; making it more enjoyable overall. As for the arena, you progree as you kill enemies and you gradually level up. Did you play more than one round? :p @ the OP.

Don't worry about that one event ruining your ENTIRE TW2 experience. If you have finished TW1, you will love the sequel as it really ties a lot of loose ends together. Finishing TW really makes the TW2 experience 10x better and you will get a much deeper experience since you have that back...
