I solved my problem, but I doubt many want to do the same as I did. I was sick of XP x64 anyways, so I removed it from Linux and reinstalled a 32 bit copy of Windows instead, and now after reinstalling my retail copy of the EE it works perfectly. Must have been some conflict within Windows...

What I was saying was that the link you had provided to Microsoft's site is for Vista, so I can't use that, and threfore it won't help with my problem unfortunately. I'm running XP, and I can't get the game working.

I don't think getting a box copy of the EE will help. That's what I have and it doesn't start. How did you check the files to see that they had nothing in them? I could check mine and confirm whether it's also a problem with the box or if my problem is different from the others.

I'm also having this error. Black screen on load up, crash to desktop. No changes to my sound hardware accel will make any difference. Latest DirectX, widescreen monitor, WinXP Pro x64 SP2. Using the US boxed retail version of the EE, and I've never owned the original.
