[1.05] Novigrad is crash central

I know many others have the same problem. Novigrad is crash central, either dropping to desktop or completely seizing up my machine. I can go for 1/2 hour, then nothing but crashes and seize-ups over and over. Go outside the city, however, and its back to pretty stable.

Lots of that ol' friend, Access_Violation error and more than a few complete machine freezes that can, of course, produce no dump log or report.

red download the gog installer version. the first released version had some bugs in it, trust me; i redownloaded it and now im running fine

Edit: Noticed the game switched back to borderless windowed by itself. Reverting back to Fullscreen reduced the crashes to what they were before. Here and there every few hours.

Exactly the same for me (i5-2500k/GTX 970). Had 3 crashes in 10 minutes of gameplay and on top of that my loading times have tripled since patch 1.05. Before that I would always have finished loading when Dandelion was finished talking now im at 20% when Dandelion stops talking and then I have to wait like 30-60 seconds until I can get ingame. It's really annoying

I don't use Gog myself, so no help for me sadly.

I'll check that.

If it's crashing in Novigrad but stable everywhere else, that should tell you something. Novigrad is by far the most taxing area in the game CPU wise, so it may not be a game issue but whether your machine is actually stable or not.

I would drop everything back to stock clocks and voltages if you overclocked and see if it improves. If it does, then you know it's the hardware that's unstable.

Nah, that's old advice I'm afraid. Super clocked at factory and tested stable in a ton of other games and stress tester software by me over the last year (just for fun so I could see what isn't a stable clock on my GPU). My GPU is not the issue. My CPU/memory/GPU combination is not the problem. They are stable as all get out! I tried underclocking to default just to test, even though I knew my machine wasn't the issue. No change. Same crash errors as many others - can't all need new GPU's or underclocking factory stable GPUs.

If these forums weren't full of people with default or underclocked GPU's crashing too, I might think it's my system. Because they too crash, and its widespread, then it is the game itself and NVIDIA drivers that need correction. I posted simply to look for what other people might have done with the game settings to fix their problem.

Have you tried using Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode to clean everything out and then do a fresh driver install with just the driver and PhysX, with nothing else?

I've seen that work for a few people to solve outright, or at least ameliorate the situation.

Yup. Good little software too! Love how easy it is to use, and clear about what it wants to do.

I can only think of one other thing. Make sure your game files are all verified, and if they are, it may be possible that you have corrupt OS files. That happened to me once, and caused games which relied on .net framework (corrupted by an unstable overclock) to crash inexplicably.

Run sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth in the elevated command prompt window.

Just came from the most successful Novigrad play session since I started. Two hours+ doing quests, cutscene after cutscene, etc. The difference? Switched to borderless window based on someone else's tip I came across somewhere else. How odd! In Velen proper, I need to be fullscreen, in Skellige I need to be borderless, and in Novigrad, it appears, I need to also be borderless.

That's just a band aid, a temporary fix. The actual problem is definitely being caused by something else, but I'm not so sure it's the game. It's most likely a driver problem or a software conflict.. Or it could also be corrupt files of some sort as well.

I've had zero issues playing in fullscreen mode since the game released, and I have SLI so borderless isn't even an option for me. Most people are playing the game in fullscreen mode I'd wager without problems..

Interesting I can't play the game on borderless windowed at all It will crash every 10 minutes. On Fullscreen though: Barely any crashes

Hi there,

I have the excact same problem. I've done almost EVERYTHING outside of Novigrad because after entering town, my system freezes. There's no temperature problem or sth like that....

I can reproduce the crash by talking to the elvish girl that's molested by two guys. When the cutscene starts, the PC freezes.

I've had problems with the game freezing since 1.04 - set the max FPS to 30 and I was able to play for more than a week without problems. Now with 1.05 the freezes come up quite often again.

It's so sad :( I want to meet Triss

Edit: I have a brand new GTX970 and run the game in borderless all the time since I've had problems with fullscreen in pre-1.04

And another beautiful, crashless session in Novigrad. Not even hitching. However, as soon as I wandered out into Velen itself to do a quest a ways away, crashed to desktop. Reloaded. Crashed to desktop at the same spot. Once more. Crashed. Switched to fullscreen, went on without problem. Heading back, hit a different spot near Novigrad and crashed. Switched to borderless, and voila! Safe and sound.

I've run all diagnostics and special tests, and refreshes to death. The game has troubles. Other people on these forums have the same troubles. Sounds very game-related to me, though of course, conflicts between other software and the way our individual Windows version treats the game I can believe. But not GPU. Not CPU. Not memory. Not blue hobgoblins. Not a need for reinstalling Windows or all that jazz.

Another great play session in/around Novigrad with zero crashes. Finally, don't feel like I need to keep my finger over the F5 key every two minutes. Every three, four even, but not two.

Update: If u are stuck in some kind quest/dialogue where u crash, try validating your game via steam. It worked for me.
Reason: you might have downloaded corrupted files and these will be fixed through that.

I had a handful of crashes- mostly the game instantly closing itself before entering Novigrad... after entering I could barely pay for 20 min before it crashed. My comp is i72600k, EVGA gtx 780 SC and 8 GB 1600 MHz Corsair ram and an Asus p8z68v-pro mobo. After reverting to the default "turbo boost" settings in my mobo for BOTH cpu and ram (they are linked), I have experienced literally 1 crash in 40 hours of play since. This means my ram is not operating at its "default" 1600 MHz, but 1200, whereas the cpu is at it's "default" of 3.8 GHz "boost"... but for me this is clearly worth it.

I have no idea why this is! This is the only game that reacts badly to the Asus BIOS overclock- cpu @ 4.4 GHz and ram @ 1600Mhz . And, the "SC" on my GPU has no effect on the stability of the game! 0.o

If interested, here is the thread I made about the crashing with several event viewer logs and a bunch of the Witcher 3 .crashinfo files almost all of which included "Error reading location 0xffffffff": http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/43181-Here-are-some-event-viewer-error-reports-for-you

Borderless Window mod forces Vsync + Triple Buffering. Novigrad is an area prone to FPS spikes and those two greatly alleviate the problem. I suggest you to use an external FPS limiter instead than the one in game (for example Riva Tuner Statistic Server or Nvidia Inspector), and then, for even better results, enabled Vsync and Triple Buffer (also these two you can do with Nvidia Inspector or alternatively you can use the ingame Vsync along D3Doverrider).
