16:10 Support

Hello everyone, i'm a really big fan of the Witcher games and can't wait for the thrid installment.

I loved the Witcher 2 however, one problem i had is that the game didn't support the 16:10 aspect ration properly...the game had black bars.

Cd project later released a patch which removed the black bars but also cropped the field of view.

So my question is , is there any official statement that the Witcher 3 will natively support 16:10 reolutions without black bars and with the standard fov? Can CD project confirm or deny this?

Thanks!

It's physically impossible to have different aspect ratios without introducing black bars, cropping the image or distorting* it.

What you want is that as a user of a 16:10 display, you get more vertical screenspace instead of less horizontal screenspace when compared to a 16:9 display. Considering that 16:9 is the most popular aspect ratio (especially when taking TVs into consideration), I don't see why it should be done that way.

*An (ingame) option to adjust the FoV by distorting the image in a clever way (i.e. distort the edges more than the centre of the image) probably is the most desirable solution to that issue, and I hope they'll have something like that - many players like to adjust their FoV due to the display aspect ratio or as a simple matter of taste.

Physically? This is not physics.

BTW, a renderer can render at different aspect ratios, that means changing FoV position and rendering more on the sides in the case of 16:10.

At some point before the image is driven to the display, it must be reduced to pixels. An LCD has pixels of size, shape, and number fixed in manufacturing and cannot display different pixel geometries. That much is physics and cannot be avoided.

A 16:10 screen cannot display a 16:9 image without cropping, letterboxing, or distortion, and vice versa. The engine has to be able to render for different screen geometries, or you end up making compromises.

I think that's what went wrong in TW2 originally. They had only 16:9 support completed, so 16:10 got letterboxed.

Do you guys think TW3 will have 16:10 aspect ratio support? If it does not then what will I be losing since I have a Samsung T240 24" 16:10 with a res of 1920x1200

Will it only be small blackbars? Or will it be cropped and distorted image quality? I prefer 16:10 because they are more PC based even if they are not the current universal standard.

Again this is far more of a proof that CDP is not a PC centric developer anymore. As much as i hate black bars, the market is on 16:9 aspect ratio

PC gaming was always diverse, you lose that diversity you lose the meaning of it. Anyways, I will most probably have to make due with black bars and stuff.

Proof of what? TW2 has 16:10 now, and TW3 isn't even out yet.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't have 16:10 support. Unless you're ubisoft, practically everyone includes 16:10 support and CDPR obviously also learned to include it in TW2.

The Witcher 2 at first had black bars on 16:10 (and 4:3 and 5:4) aspect ratios but later CD project removed them with a patch. The problem is the solution was to put the camera closer to Geralt which resulted in a cropped image with less fov which for someone was too claustrophobic.

So all i'm saying is it would be good if Cd Project confirms that the Witcher 3 will run on these aspect ratios with the same field of view as 16:9 or that there will be a fov option or something similar.

Any official statement from someone from CD Project on the matter would be most welcome!

^^ this as what obiwan kenobi stated. 16:10 is achieved zooming in with 16:9 ratio and crop out certain details. this means you LOSE details/pixels/view with 16:10.

with also the slowdown radial menu and limited skills, that wasn't proof enough TW2 was indeed designed for console audience in mind?

CDPR at the end of day is about money. IF PC sales are unmatched with consoles, PC is just crap. No matter how PC superior to console or not.

I beg to differ, they released TW2 on consoles years later. I wonder if adjusting for the certain aspect ratio was too much of a trouble?

I bet you don't get what i meant? That's the reason. Regardless of releasing Witcher 2 on consoles year later or not is irrelevant. My point is the game was designed and developed as a multi-platform game at start. So consideration has to cater for controller in mind. With limited skills/abilities/spells that suits the number of buttons on a controller vs. the number of skills/abilities/spells that a keyboard and mouse could map?

So does it makes sense that PC has 40 skills/abilities and Consoles have 10? It cannot separate the content or game mechanics due to this. So.. PC, XB, PS, WiiU or whatever you name it should just have 10 instead of 40.

So? Goodbye PC master race. You are not really a master race there, are you?

Why does console vs PC make it`s way into virtually every thread ?

Facts are facts . While you can still purchase 16:10 monitors they are being phased out by the HD revolution and they are also cheaper to make . Whether CDP RED will support 16:10 is up to them and what they deem to be viable options .
