60FPS but constant stuttering when running

Hi,

Patch 1.10 made horseriding buttery smooth, however when Geralt is running (not sprinting) there is a constant and very noticable stutter. The animation itself is smooth, but the camera seems to chug behind after every animation cycle. The speed at which the movement through the scenery is rendered is not in sync with the running animation.

At first I thought this was a feature (like headbobbing in first person), but I no longer think this intended.

Anyone experiencing this?

Could you record this issue and post it on youtube and give us private link? Easier to see what's wrong then.

Exactly my problem...but also with sprinting...by feet or by horse...after patch 1.10 I spent weeks trying to fix it but then I have gave up...I have 980Ti SLI no matter if I play 4K at 30fps 2K at 50fps or 1080p at over 100fps...it's not a matter of graphic or power...I though was something about the SLI but now i think it's something about the engine itself...I've tried everything V-sync on\off, full\adaptive...nothing...I'll try to record a video later this evening...

Yup, same thing for me. 60FPS majority of the time, but the infuriating camera stutter is still there. To be honest, this was an issue for me even before patch 1.10...

Turn off pre-rendered frames put that on 1 in control panel, if that doesn't change. change it to 4, start game and then change it back to 1. Latency/stuttering is almost the same thing. This might help.

Running on Core I7 3820 OC @ 4.5GHZ, 32 GB DDR3 RAM, 2x GTX 970 in SLI and SSD. Settings on high (not ultra), hairworks off and all post-processing on except anti-aliasing. Pre-rendered frames set to 1, ingame vsync and framelimiting off. Vsync forced through nvidia control center and 60 FPS lock through RTSS (as per Durante's advice, see The Witcher 3 - Alchemy of Smoothness)

Most noticable when running, but also (though less) when sprinting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYfl4Kek-o0
There is a clear difference between the speed at which Geralt is moving and the environment.

@ Alastre: I do not believe this is related to SLI, since the problem occurs when running the game on a single card as well.

It seems to be a texture streaming issue. I had it and I fixed it by increasing TextureMemoryBudget to 1024. Also try setting TextureMipBias=0 and see if that helps.

There's also that gc.ini tweak where you have to set ObjectMemoryTrigger = 512

That's a strange set of settings... First of all, why force 1 pre-rendered frame? If anything, it should decrease the performance. Fewer pre-rendered frames help with the input lag, not fps.

Second of all, the goal of disabling in-game Vsync and enabling it via CP is...? Even Nvidia states(although, it's outdated; only for Win XP and Vista) that in "Vista" we should use Vsync within the application.

Try full-screen, pre-rendered frames application controlled, limit your fps to 60 and enable Vsync via game settings and see how it will work out.

I followed this guide: http://www.pcgamer.com/durantes-witcher-3-analysis-the-alchemy-of-smoothness/
In an earlier stage this game had some serious frame-pacing issues when using the in-game vsync/framelimiter. Forcing through driver and using RTSS made the experience buttery smooth up untill patch 1.10. (Can confirm this while using 2 R9 270x in crossfire and on my current rig)

It might be placebo-effect, but I have the impression that setting pre-rendered frames to 1 alliviates the issue to some degree.

Thank you for your suggestion, might I ask; where can I find the settings below?

They broke SLI with 1.10. Someone made comparisons not long ago and performance in SLI is much worse.

This is a probably related to your custom settings or due to an obscure SLI bug.

On my system with a GTX970 every graphics and post processing option is on ultra, hairworks is off. I have no custom Nvidia settings, FPS is locked at 60 and vsync is on in W3 settings. I'm seeing very different results from you. Although my FPS fluctuate between 40-60, it's mostly near 60 and I don't experience the stutter at all from your video link. Try removing your custom settings and tweaks

Thank you for your suggestions, however I have tried every possible (combination of) settings and custom fix, also running the game on a single card. Reïnstalling as well. I saw a simular post in the PS4 forum yesterday, quoting the video I uploaded on youtube. This pretty much rules out the possibility of it being hardware of settings-related. Admittedly some people seem to notice it more than others.

It's in user.ini in your Documents\The Witcher 3 folder

Have you tried editing gc.ini and setting ObjectMemoryTrigger = 512
gc.ini is in your Witcher 3 installation folder\bin\config\base

Much obliged. Sadly changing these settings does not remove the issue. I will post a ticket to CDPR, I can only assume this has something to do with the engine.

UPDATE: I have reported this issue to CDPR, sadly they do not acknowledge this as an issue with the game.

-----REPLY-------------
Hello,

Thank you for sending us this video footage.

This may be an instance of the so called micro-stuttering/frame skipping, which in various games is related to V-Sync - try changing your settings for V-Sync (on to off). You can experiment with this setting both in Options in and in your graphics cards control panel. Lowering grass density in the game Options should improve performance as well.

Additionally, changing Triple Buffering settings in the graphics card control panel could help. [Also, in the case of NVIDIA GPUs dropping the maximum pre-rendered frames to 1 in the NVIDIA control panel might be helpful.] Finally, try running the game in windowed mode. Best results might be achieved with Full Screen, Anti Aliasing, and V-Sync off.

At least you got a reply, it's probably hard to replicate your issue.

If I were you I would do the following, it's the only way to pinpoint the problem. This will take a lot of time though.
- Physically remove one GPU from your system
- Reinstall Windows
- Install newest GPU drivers
- Install Witcher 3 with all patches
- Don't set any custom GPU or W3 options, only use the settings found in the interface
- Try again

If it works withouter stutter try adding settings, add the other GPU, etc. until it breaks again to see what's causing it.

unequip all consumable slots and then fill them all 4 (ALL 4 OF THEM) (doesn't matter with what you fill them: food, water, potions, decoctions etc.).... the stutter will be gone

(I take NO credit for finding this workaround)

Holy crap. 3 weeks of searching the web, tweaking graphical settings, changing drivers, etc. and this was the cause!
You are a God among men. THANK YOU!

Seriously :D I never would have thought. Patch 1.10 introduced 2 extra quickslots, but I never bothered to use them. I can conform that assigning a consumable to all slots fixes the ingame stuttering.

Make this a sticky?
