A few people were asking me for my own lighting changes. So I've uploaded it. The link is at the end.

  • Before you install the files, ensure you first backup your startup.bundle file. Located in: The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\content\content0\bundles\startup.bundle

To install;
  1. The cleanest way to do so, is to extract the provided folder to the desktop.
  2. Copy your startup.bundle to the provided folder (where install_weather_mod.bat is)
  3. Run install_weather_mod.bat. You will be prompted that the new files are larger than the previous ones.
  4. Type force, then hit enter. Seeing as there are 10 files, you will be prompted this 10 times. You can hit the up key, and enter to copy/paste the force command.
  5. It will finish the repacking, and then hit enter again.
  6. Copy / paste the modified startup.bundle back to your The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\content\content0\bundles folder.
  7. Done.

To uninstall;
  1. Simply copy / paste back in your backed up original startup.bundle file (in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\content\content0\bundles folder)..

I tried to evade most of the problems from the existing lighting mod. Which forces the cutscene lighting completely. Replacing any original environment lighting for each area. This blends the cutscene lighting model, with the existing default area lighting 50/50.

So, basically you get the improved lighting accuracy(stuff that should be lite, is lite. And stuff that should be dark, is dark, etc). Unlike the default lighting, which had random shit glowing bright, when it should be dark. You also get the higher quality ambient occlusion, and shadowing. But you keep all the original weather conditions, sky, draw distance, from the original lighting, etc.

This isn't a 'release', btw. I'm just sharing my own files, for people who wanted them here. But, thanks a lot to essenthy, for bringing this up, and sharing his findings.

Hopefully when REDKit is released it can be done in a cleaner manner, etc. Tbh, I'd like much prefer if CDPR did this for CP, officially lol. Fix that wonky lighting bros.

@kilyan82 If you haven't backed up your bundle file before installing the kng mod. To cleanly uninstall you'll have to delete startup.bundle, and verify your game files with either GOG Galaxy, or Steam, I'm afraid.

Always backup files before modifiying them like this. We need to get onto asking CDPR about loading loose files for modding, imo.

Edit: I suppose I can upload the 1.05 startup bundle this once, if you don't have the original.

Edit2: Here's the original startup bundle file for 1.05: http://1drv.ms/1KWhsvf

Thanks Asmo. I'll give that a shot and report back to see if I experience the same issues I had with the other mod.

Also, nice to see that the forums are moving again, but 90% of the time when I come here, it takes pages about a minute or two to load. It's so hard to carry on a discussion like that :(

I find it quite tough to understand too but I have read it several times because I wan't to understand this stuff and have been trying to follow this particular discussion as best I can. I am getting there but still a bit to go but I still think we need to make the effort to try and udnerstand it :)

Hello, My Beloved Primitives.

I see we had a minor flamewar here, some modding credit thing. NOT THE PLACE. Take it elsewhere. Chopped a bunch of posts, didn't Pony or drop anyone because effort and it wasn't really bad, but, you know, start your own thread to fight over mod credit..politely. Do it politely. Of course.

I've noted 0 performance cost for this. But there are a few side-effects. Night time when it's clear out(no clouds in front of the moon). The moon is overly bright(they made the moon super bright anyway, with the default lighting, tbh), and it produces a lot of light. Second - some interiors that are small, like huts, and small houses. Like the ones in Velen, are brighter than normal inside. Because it was intended for it to be like this for cutscene reasons.

Asmodean778, thank you very much for sharing! I'm currently using E3FX the popular reshade on the Nexus, I guess I need to get rid of it in order to test yours right?
Cheers!

No, these edit the game's own internal lighting. It's not injected post-processing. You can use both, if you want.

----
#edit: I also didn't notice, until now. That there's a new modding sub forum in the witcher 3 section.

WOW!

This one is much better. Not overexposed sky, not "dark yellow" tint on Geralts' hair, better skybox etc.

Are you sure you don't want to put the file on Nexus? It is a pity to not have people allowed to enjoy this much better version.

If someone want to upload it to nexus, be my guest. I've no problems with it. Just leave a link to the source post in the description for it.

True, you can use both but I would personally not mix E3FX with the cutscene lightning mod (well, I would not personally use E3FX to begin with, but that's another story...) since the colors changes in all presets are not tailored to the changes in the cutscene lightning, so results will be completely imprevedibile (and, as it is always the case with imprevedibile things, a lot of crap usually ensues).

So I would refrain from using ANY preset with the color lightning mod until authors don't create some tailored specifically for it, especially E3FX with its "blue tint all over" that is completely in antithesis with the change of colors (warm orange and blue together = bleah as they are complementary colors).

It would be much better if you or Esenthy put it yourselves. This is your job after all. Moreover you can put videos images etc. about it and update it in case of tweaks. Having a third party do the upload never works well.

Naturally if you two decide you absolutely don't want to put it yourselves then either myself or someone else will, I'm sure, because it would be a waste to let this much better version go unpublished. This forum gathers people, yes, but it is nothing in comparison to a site like Nexus.

I've nothing against nexus, btw. Been a member there for like 6 years or something like that. It's just I cba providing the required support for it. I said I wasn't going to start modding this game, until I'd completed it once.

I've already tweaked, and modded it quite a lot. ( Because I've no self control lol ). Most stuff was too unstable w/o red tools, to release. Hence I'm still on the Baron quest line lol. I want to play the game, that I've waited 3 years for : )

I tried to make this rule for myself(and hardly stick to it), because I always ruin games for myself, when I start modding them too much before completing them. I've already seen some major spoilers from inside the game files. Which I cannot unsee lol : (

------------
Btw, if anyone was curious what sort of info is in the environment files. I opened the cutscene lighting one in a hex editor, to see some of the command variables used, etc. It's in the spoiler below, for those interested.

You and I are in the same boat, my friend. This time around I thought I would finish the game before starting some modification to then involve myself so much in it that I would lose track of playing and enjoying the damn game itself. I really fancied it.

In the beginning I just thought: "oh well, I don't really like the orange filter so much but making a preset to address that is a little thing, so it will not make much difference." So I started tweaking a preset, and then the graphic thread appeared, and then from a simple "remove orange filter" preset I had in mind, I am now fully on board to to try to simulate as much as possible (in the boundaries of the medium at my disposal, a poor injector) the 35 min gameplay demo atmosphere. I took an insane amount of work to do it (practically a month of constant tuning, with two times scratching everything and begin anew) but then, finally, two days ago I finalized the preset and it was really wonderful.

So now I could play. I begin anew but this time around there's something in the combat that doesn't satisfy me fully and some hints that I did read in a thread echoes in my mind. I try to resist the urge to start yet another mod to address those gameplay dynamics but in the end I cannot win the fight. So I put myself on the work, yet again. Luckily the job to do on combat is not so much (because hardcoded things are impossible the change) but till now I only gone so far as the beginning of the Baron quest myself :(

Still in a sense I'm happy of what I've done. It is true that I haven't yet enjoyed the game as others cold but I'm sure that with my preset and combat changes I will enjoy it much more then otherwise (and maybe I can help others do the same). Frankly speaking without my preset I could not play the game as I would constantly start nitpicking the graphics and not really immerse myself in the experience. It took a lifetime to do that preset (really! it probably took me more than making a quest from scratch; it is more difficult to try to have a square fit in a circle than simply create a circle from scratch) but it was worth it, after all.

See the thing in this way: if you are a modder not matter what, you enjoy modding and that's part of the fun too. Also your work is practically done so you don't really have to do much more than simply put it online. Anyway either you put it online or not if there's something that you want to tweak in your mind you will do it the same in the end, as it is a fight that you cannot win and you know it ;)

At last in this way you have worked not only for yourself but also for others that can enjoy its fruits the same and are not capable of doing it by themselves.

Btw, if anyone was curious what sort of info is in the environment files. I opened the cutscene lighting one in a hex editor, to see some of the command variables used, etc. It's in the spoiler below, for those interested.

yet, that info doesn't mean much, you can also open the file with a normal text editor would be the same output. I'm currently working on unserializing the .env files using the decompiled source code from Sir_Kane as reference. Looks good, it's fun and it will allow us to read and eventually edit the values for the variables stored in .env files.

The environment files are encrypted. So you obv can't read them with a text editor.

Example;

GL reading that.

Also, I've got a feeling the game won't accept them, if they're hacky modified. They'd need to be the exact same size in bits, or the game will reject them, and crash. Goodluck with it though, would be cool to edit them.

I suspect REDKit may not even let you edit the env files. Unless they specifically add it, by request or such. It probably just enables you to associate specific env files for specific areas, etc. Similar to what you can already do (messily) by manually editing the csv's.

I also suspect the weather conditions associated with those startup csv files, are referenced elsewhere also, seperately. It would explain the annoyances, getting the modified env files to stick during location transition / travel, etc.

But that's merely speculation.

A few people were asking me for my own lighting changes. So I've uploaded it. The link is at the end.

  • Before you install the files, ensure you first backup your startup.bundle file. Located in: The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\content\content0\bundles\startup.bundle

To install;
  7. Done.

To uninstall;

Unlike the default lighting, which had random shit glowing bright, when it should be dark, and vice versa.

Tbh, I'd like much prefer if CDPR did this for PC, officially lol. Fix that wonky lighting bros.

Storms and heavy clouds during daytime are still broken, rain is going, lightings are striking, but still bright sun and no dark sky.((( Also files still larger than originals that is not good.(
