A Lore-Friendly Concept for Project Sirius: Morgraig, Witchers’ Origins, and Character Customization
Hi everyone and CDPR Dev Team,
As a huge fan of The Witcher franchise, I’ve been thinking a lot about the upcoming multiplayer game, Project Sirius. One of the biggest concerns among the community regarding a multiplayer Witcher game with full character customization is how it will handle lore consistency, specifically regarding the inclusion of female Witchers.
We know that canonically, in the books and main games, the Trial of the Grasses was designed for male biology, and Vesemir/Geralt stated that female Witchers never existed in Kaer Morhen. To bypass this restriction without using a lazy "corporate plot armor" that breaks the established lore, I would love to pitch a narrative and gameplay framework that solves every issue perfectly.
1. The Setting: The Fortress of Morgraig
Instead of setting the game in the current timeline, Project Sirius should be set centuries in the past, during the era of Morgraig—the original fortress where the very first Order of Witcher candidates was gathered and tested by mages like Alzur.
By setting the game in Morgraig, co-op gameplay and female Witchers make perfect sense:
• The Co-op Justification: In the original Order, Witchers didn't act as isolated lone wolves. They operated as a unified military-like brotherhood, sent in squads and patrols to clear massive monster infestations. They were trained to fight together.
• The Female Witchers Justification: In this early era, mages were actively experimenting and altering the mutagenic formulas in real-time. It is completely plausible that they attempted to mutate women during this trial-and-error phase.
• Preserving Geralt’s Lore: Since Morgraig fell and the original Order dissolved centuries before Geralt and Vesemir were even born, these early female Witchers would have died out long ago. When the Wolf School later established Kaer Morhen with rigid, conservative rules, the records of these early experiments were lost to time. Geralt and Vesemir wouldn't be "forgetful"—they genuinely wouldn't know.
2. Gameplay Mechanics: The "Future Founders" as Mentors
A potential downside of setting the game in Morgraig is that we would lose the identity of the classic Witcher Schools (Wolf, Cat, Griffin, Bear, Viper, Manticore), since they didn't exist yet. However, we can turn this into a brilliant RPG progression and faction mechanic:
Inside the fortress of Morgraig, the NPCs would include the original knights and Witchers who would eventually go on to break away and found the separate schools. As a player, you can choose one of these future founders or factions as your personal Mentor, unlocking specific playstyles and philosophies:
• The Future Wolf Mentor: Training under those who valued balance shapes your character into a classic mix of swordplay, alchemy, and a strict code of honor.
• The Future Cat Founder: Choosing him unlocks an agile, acrobatic playstyle, stealth mechanics, and lighter weaponry, reflecting the philosophy that Witchers should adapt to human politics.
• The Future Griffin Founder (Erland of Larvik): Training with him focuses your build heavily on advanced Sign casting and magical strategy.
• The Future Bear Founder (Arnaghad): Allying with Arnaghad means joining the dissident, heavy-handed faction within Morgraig before their violent split from the Order. Training under him turns your Witcher into a frontline tank focusing on defense, heavy armor, and high durability, embracing his philosophy that witchers should prioritize strength and coin over the Order's strict moral rules.
• Ivar Evil-Eye (The Future Viper Founder): Training under Ivar in Morgraig introduces a lethal assassin build, specializing in dual-wielding short blades, stealth, and coating weapons with deadly poisons, right before his obsession with the Wild Hunt leads him to found the Viper School in the south.
• The Zerrikanian Alchemists (The Future Manticore Lineage): Learning from the mages and witchers aligned with eastern research emphasizes extreme alchemy, granting advanced resistance to toxicity, unique bomb crafting, and the use of specialized mutagens (which could also tie into early successful mutations for female candidates before they officially formed the Manticore School).
Conclusion
With this system, players wouldn't select a "School" from a generic menu. Instead, they would select a philosophy and lineage through their mentor. Your medallion would still be the classic circular shape of Morgraig, but with custom engravings reflecting your mentor's style.
This approach gives players the complete freedom of character customization that a modern multiplayer game needs, justifies the cooperative gameplay, and—most importantly—deeply respects the established lore of the universe we all love.
I would love to hear the community's thoughts on this, and hopefully, someone at CDPR sees this concept!
Good luck with development, team!
