A shard of Ice - Explanations (Spolires)

Hello

I've finished reading the fan transaltion of "Shard of ice" and I didn't understand what has been going about with the kestrels and the messeges.

can someone please explain me what was inside the messege for geralt?

PS: what actually was Geralt Third wish in "The Last Wish" because I didn't get this either.

Thank you Very Much

His 3rd wish was for Yennefer to love him and I don't know what was in that message, but I'd guess that Yen explained in that message why she had left. She had feelings for both, Geralt and that mage(whose name I can't remember) and she didn't want to hurt either of them so she left...

Yennifer came to the city to make a choice. The kestrel was to deliver a break-up letter to one lover, while Yennifer would leave with the other. It is implied that she planned the recipient to be Geralt - she believed he was driven only by lust, - however once he confronts her about it, proving that he truly loves her, she realizes she cannot choose, she has no right to choose one over another. She cannot choose, but knows that she must - so she conjures a second kestrel. Both Istredd and Geralt receive the same letter from each kestrel while Yennifer leaves the town, alone.

It's some time since I read the story so I'm not really sure, but wasn't the opposite? She wanted to hear from Geralt that he loved her but he couldn't muster the words. Forget it, I'm going to read the story again tonight (the official translation in italian or serbocroatian, I have them both, I only hope they don't conflict, lol)

Saw a thread about this a while back. I don't think there was any concensus reached. In the story the priest talks about how he'd need to word the wish carefully and tie his own fate to Yennefer's to stop the genie from killing her after granting it, which could be why Sapkowski didn't actually say what it was in case someone found a loophole.

For my part though, given Sapkowski's penchant for drawing from fairy tales, I like to think he wished that they'd live happily ever after.

I personally tought that his wish is "never move from her side" which is someway to describe "condemnd him to her" but I wanted to ask the opinion of other readers.

the part about the kestrels is now clear, thank you very much

PS: this books are becoming quickly one of my favorits fantasy books, only outlasted (yet) by the belgriad and Melorien Series (David Eddinges)

Judgeing by many examples in his works, Sapkowski seems to believe that too detailed an explanation may destroy the magic of the story. (by the way, I wish that George Lucas shared such a belif ;) )

That being said, my theory is that Geralt wished for Yennefer and himself to be destined for each other.
In subsequent stories there is a recurring theme, about Geralt and Yennefer being destined for each other, but it is not going to work, the destiny is not enough, there have to be "something more", etc

the part about destiny is not enough isn't really correct because they have been together almost all the Saga.

Well, their relationship was a stormy one, at best. They were breaking up, geting together, only to break up again. When alone, they were yearning after each other. When together, they were hurting one another.
Moments of understanding, there were few, and far between. Towards the end, they seemd to come to some terms, but who knows how long it would lasted.

The whole relationship is very unrealistic IMO. Geralt basically falls crazily in love in what? A couple of hours? That is just ridiculous. Also how you could fall in love when Yen was such a bitch at first is another mystery.

You didn't have anything like that in your life? Didn't you love someone who supposedly shouldn't even interest you? If no, then I pity you ;)

When I first read the "The last wish" I wanted to take revenge on her but in the end of the story I kinda understood geralt.

Was she? I did not see it. She was interesting, and complicated. Somewhat eccentric. Also funny.... I can see how Geralt could have found he fascinating. Not everyone is into overly nice, sweet, sweet girls.

Not a relationship one would expect in a game, to be sure.

I actually would love to see such relationship in the game. I hate that all girls in video games are ultra nice and easy. I had over 9000! relationships like that in video games. I want something new. I want relationship with some rough, hard and not easy to get girl.

That's why I loved relationship with Jack in ME2.

Most of the Players would cut her to twelve rectanguler pieces

In ME2 I liked miranda more, more intersting person, less tramutized bitch.

Yes, 99% of players preferred Miranda over Jack. But I liked that 'traumatized' part of Jack. It was something fresh.
