Any idea when 1440/1600p monitors will become more affordable? Because at the moment they are ridiculously expensive..

Probably when 1440p becomes more popular in TV. The price of monitors is driven by economy of scale in flat panel manufacturing, and production for TV sets the scale. That's what got the price of 1920x1080 monitors down (and nearly drove 1920x1200 out of the market).

The video world seems to be headed for UltraHD (2160p, 3840x2160), bypassing 1440p. You'll probably see reasonable consumer monitors in 2160p not too long from now.
1440p is showing up in high-end tablets and smartphones. These are very small panel sizes that don't translate to heavy production for larger desktop monitors.

If you don't need audio, is there any significant advantage of DisplayPort over Dual-DVI?

Another benefit is for multimonitor setup. DisplayPort 1.2 supports daisy-chaining, i.e. routing data for several monitors through one cable. In such case you connect subsequent monitors not to the video card, but to the previous monitor in the chain. It reduces cables clutter.

Was planning on getting a Dell U2412M to replace my ancient TN panel HP monitor once I get my PC build up and running. At the moment the 27 inch 1440p model is on sale but it's still twice more than the 24 inch one. Too much, way way too much..

I thought of getting Dell U2412M too, but ended up buying U2413 which has lower response time (so it's better for gaming). It has also better colors, though it's more expensive. Also, Dell already made the next iteration to replace U2412M, namely U2414H. It has a downside however, like Guy N'wah noted. They cut the resolution down to 1920x1080. I don't like this trend. Luckily U2413 was still 1920x1200.

I remember the day I switched from my old 17" dinosaur to my current 24" monitor a few years ago. I thought that was kind of overwhelming, and it did take some get'n used to. And so much more room on my desk...for all them empty soda cans : /. Yeah, I don't see myself going bigger than that any time soon.

Yeah, I think 24" is more or less an ergonomic limit for the desk monitor. Higher than that is uncomfortable to me. But resolution can be higher with the same screen size still.

A lot more expensive. Where I live:

U2412M: 215€

U2413: 428€

U2713: 429€

If I was willing to spend 400-500 eur on a monitor, I'd definitely get the 27 inch one..

@eskimoe: I pays off for me. Colors are way more pleasant than in my previous monitor. The price is higher also because it allows hardware calibration, though I doubt I'll need that. Games run well with it (TW2 in Wine was excellent). Some report more problems with U2412M when it comes to gaming however. 27" is a bit too large already, as I wrote above, and would require putting it more in the distance and my desk space doesn't allow it.

What kinds of problems?

If it's response time I really don't care since I don't pay competitive mp..

Yes, mostly response time. If it suits you - then it's fine. You can ask the store to let you test the monitor before you take it home - I found such place. Then you can see for yourself if it's good enough.

That's quite a lot especially if it doesn't include the tax. I got it for $500 (including tax). Prices actually vary quite a lot between different stores, but I needed one where I could check the monitor first.

If you aren't an enthusiast photographer there's little reason for buying the U2413 over the U2412M,maybe how it handles pwm flickering could be a selling point, for ppl who are bothered by it. Otherwise you can get two M2412U's for the price of a U2413. There really isn't that much of a difference that one could notice by bare eyes, especially while gaming. I'd gladly give 400+ euro for a stellar 24 inch monitor if there was one on the market geared towards gaming and media consumption, but it would really need to justify it's price. :)

Anyone have any experience with Korean IPS monitors?

Was thinking of a possibility of ordering one from ebay.

I've heard they are cheaper, but can have other problems. For example the lack of anti-glare coating on some models can be quite irritating.

Some article about them: http://techreport.com/review/23291/those-27-inch-ips-displays-from-korea-are-for-real

Actually I'm on the verge of ordering a QNIX QX2710 Evolution II at the moment :D

Looks like a great value monitor. And a lot of gamers seem to love it.

How many games support 21:9 resolutions?

Because I think I'm in love:

I compared DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI and may be it's subjective, but colors with DisplayPort 1.2 look more vibrant and rich to me.

@eskimoe : The problem with these monitors seems to be that they only have the DVI connection. I wonder how it translates to color quality. DisplayPort 1.2 for example should offer more options.

Didn't order one. Went for a Benq BL3200PT.

But to be honest, when it comes to color accuracy I've heard nothing but praise regarding those Qnix monitors..

Isn't 32" a bit too big for a computer monitor? It's something you'd like to use from a distance.

@.Volsung. : Yes. Unless it's some monitor which substitutes dual monitor setup. I.e. very wide and not too tall. Extra height can make it uncomfortable to use in a regular set up.

Even the former is probably not the best option. When I have an option of multi-monitor set up I usually prefer to put them at some angle not flat side by side. Kind of like this:

32" works fine as a monitor, but I think it's close to the upper limit. Anything much bigger than that, and you'd need to move it further away from the keyboard than normal, to see the full screen, which defeats the purpose of having a large monitor.

Haven't heard a single person/reviewer say the monitor's "too big" thus far. And I take their words over @Gilrond 's which I doubt has ever even owned a 32" monitor.

Quite the contrary, a lot of people are saying that since it's such a big monitor and covers so much of your field of view the immersion factor when playing games is huge.
