Act 2 question

Ok I have a question. I'm level 22 about to be 23 and 8 levels above main Act 1 questline. I'm at The King is dead. My question is twofold. One is am I too far above level to get anything from a main quest past this point? And my second question is once I get to Act 2 (I know you're act Kaer Moren) can I go to other areas (velen,Novigrad, Skellige) or are you stuck at Kaer Moren? Reason I'm asking is I want to know am I better off just sticking to side quests since I'm 8 levels above the current main quest, or should I abandon the side quests for now and focus on main for maximum exp. It's not a game breaker either way I'd just like some advice.

You will have to do a series of quests at Kaer Morhen before you can freely travel the world again. The Act 2 quests are level 21 iirc.

You're only half way through the game.

Some quests become unavailable when you get close to the end of Act 1. Any secondary quests that look as though they may be important should be done first. You can probably guess what they are, but if not, you do get to save at the critical point, so you can always reload if it throws up "Fail" warnings. Miscellaneous quests like contracts will still be there and you can go ahead with them after you get into Act 2. And a whole new bunch of secondary quests will appear.

Thanks guys. 100 hours and only half through nice. Really loving this game and I guess I should be happy that the PC version of Arkham Knight is broken cause I was going to get it but instead will get the Fallout 4 pipboy edition. Gives me plenty of time with Witcher 3 lol.

I'm in your exact situation (lvl 22) on the quest right afterwards.
I have to say I'm enjoying being somewhat OP this time around (2nd playthrough) as it feels "right" for the most part.
Geralt should not struggle with your random drowner.
Plus the big boys are still challenging even at relatively higher PC lvl.
