ACT 2...Strggeling to move the game forward

I'm playing the game and feeling I'm spending a LOT of time and effort to advance my character and the story. I complete one element of a quest after signifigant effort and I say to myself "WHAT HAVE I REALLY A C C O M P L I S H E D " ?? My usual answer is very little. This leads to frustration and demotivation to continue to push.

I'm a very experienced mmog player. My favorite single player game is SKYRIM. I have played it about 5x and just love that game. I'm wishing for the same great experience with THE WITCHER series. I bought W1 and W2 in preparation for W3. I would appreciate any enlightenment.
Perhaps an open world environment is what I need ? ANY advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

OK, Two questions, which may help both to understand why you're feeling this way and give the opportunity to offer suggestions that may make it more enjoyable.
1. You say you're spending a lot of time and effort to advance your character. Does this mean you're grinding?
If so, stop grinding and concentrate on the quests. In TW1, grinding does help advance your character, but it isn't necessary, and there's no real reason to continue with it past the point of enjoyment.
2. Why don't you think you've accomplished much? Is it all of the "Suspect" questlines? If so, concentrate on Kalkstein's quest about the Tower and on Raymond Marlowe, that will move things forward faster.
Incidentally, in terms of things not moving fast, the remaining three acts do it faster. Act 2 is the only one with that complex interconnection where everything seems to stall and then suddenly falls into place.

And if you do think that the problem is just the nature of the game, then yes, maybe put TW1 to one side, move straight to TW2. It's still not open world of course, but it is more linear, and more directly related to TW3.

Yes..there are so many threads.MANY suspect quest lines that just hang. You pull on one and you may see little progress.....So many subjects. So many quests i really didn't ask for.
I will take your advice and concentrate on the Alchemists quest with the tower. Thanks for your prompt response and suggestion.
