[Act V] Accessing Inventory

+
Fortunately the mod is still working and now I can make my Nigredo dominated Towny Owl again. This is just a game, even it is a RPG.

Geralt is in the middle of a war zone. War means chaos, widespread damage, and yes, shortages. I think it's much better that Geralt can't just saunter into the middle of a war zone and find whatever he needs. The first time I played, I really had to scramble to find enough alcohol for potions in the beginning of Act V, and that made the war seem realer to me -- it isn't just burning scenery; it has an actual effect on the player.
This is an interesting arguement. I haven't considered it yet but you are certainly right. It's a warzone and not the market place of the trade quarter ;)On the other hand, Geralt makes a lot of sane comments regarding important events, etc. in the game e.g. when the entered the Kikimore queen lair. Though Dandelion made likewise sane comment on the dike, Geralt could have made another comment on this... for those who are a bit slow on the update (incl me on my fist gameplay  )Nevertheless there 2 possibilities in Old Vizima to buy supplies, incl. bases for oil, bombs and potions. One is guy (innkeeper model) at the fences hideout. He has all kind of stuff incl rune stones but you won't see him after the rebellion is put down. But there is an Order's merchant shortly before you enter the cemetery swamp... and don't forget Kalkstein.

ah... and don't forget "The Green March" druids in the cave of the cemetery swamp. You can trade one item for 3 (three!) potions with them ;) ... provided that you have several gems in your inventory  But there are other items.

you never lose your orens (unless you gamble them away!) and there are plently of people who sell things in Act V ... really, losing your stored inventory is pretty minor. Sure i was a bit shocked and dismayed the first time, but Chuckles is right ... just move on :peace:

For me the problem is the opposite. I was *thinning* my inventory when I gave stuff to Dandelion. Yet, my inventory is full again. It was painfully obvious that Geralt isn't paid fairly or well, so scavenging became the norm. And there are so many times when places are closed that I learned to make like a boyscout. So not having stuff in my inventory is not the problem. In fact, I got tired of playing at a level that made fights with new critters a die-and-retry cycle and also tired of running out of stuff and having to redo parts of the quest because I didn't have the right [insert inventory item here] that I dedicated Act IV to gaining levels and stocking the larder. I wanted to be *prepared* for Act V.Also, I collect. The way things are going I figure Geralt needs to plan for retirement, never mind the romance and family he keeps mooning on about. He may open an apothecary, then let someone else run it and be a silent partner. Or a bookery. Become a swordmaster. Or perhaps help in rebuilding Kaer Morhen in part by bringing needed supplies as well as being a teacher and dealing with local craftsmen (masons, cooks, maids, gardeners) which is what he's been doing throughout the game. As he said 'Witchers solve problems'. Basically ... I have STUFF. I like my stuff. I have my potions, I have my herbs, but no matter how much food I give away I keep filling my inventory. There isn't even room for the notices. I spent so much time looking for things, and being desperate for coin to flesh things out that I deeply, DEEPLY, resent the idea of dropping stuff on the ground. *shudders* And I lack the personality flaw that would allow me to throw away a book so don't even ask me about it.Yaevinn had the good common sense to appoint a quartermaster, but why not flesh him out? Bonapart was right, armies need food, clothes, even entertainment (beer, booze, ladies and laddies of the evening -- censorship is so dumb) and that requires people who deal with Stuff. Supplies need to be apportioned, maintained, stored, acquired and culled. Not only that, but everyone trades during the war, so the idea that buying and selling should be limited opposes practical needs. I keep wondering why more equipment isn't being scavenged by the Scoia'tael. They just let those halberds fade away into the digital aether. Bizarre. The children and the old would be pressed into scavenging to supply the hospital and the blacksmith and the quartermaster not running around with torches so they are easier to find and kill. Practically speaking Kalkstein would have been pressed into potion making duty for the hospital not just left to his own devices because he hired 2 little mercenaries. There would be a kitchen and they would be in desperate need of supplies. And while the gates would be guarded they would not be impassable. Here they are impassable, but unguarded! There would be a watchman on the tower now that the mutant is dead. There should be watchmen on the walls, for pity's sake! Realities of war? Please. So I am adding a storage mod, because it just makes sense.

My main reason for resurrecting this thread is to say that I totally agreed with Seramiran's post.(And: I also have to thank Justme for the mod link. I find it really helpful, since I've soon run out of space for my alchemical items, and I've started having to drop some. Whenever I've gotten to this point before: I always dropped the ones that were growing plentifully all around, and therefore knew I could replenish really quickly. But I quickly realized at this point: there's not going to be any replenishing if I can't store my alchemical materials anywhere, and if I can't afford to drop anything: I'm not going to be able to pick up anything else that could be valuable.)(Highly, highly annoying feature.)Not sure if it makes sense for Kalkstein to be the one holding your stuff, but since he's there... .

Well in this part of the game is would make sense being there fighting in the streets the Inn would be close or boarded up To me it would make sense that Kalkstein would hold Geralt stuff for that would be one of the few that he would trust with his things.

I just got to Old Vizima while playing today and I was also blindsided by not being able to go back to pick up my stuff and not finding any innkeepers in Chapter V. This was just a little while after being blindsided yesterday by all the merchants and innkeeper from Murky Waters disappearing after I killed Dagon.I considered going back to a Murky Waters save game so that I could sell off the crap I stored in the inn before killing Dagon, but in fact I made so much gold playing dice with the King and looting dead elves and dead knights of the order in Old Vizima that it was not really necessary. (I took the neutral option and I had to stack up several hundred dead Knights and Elves I realized that they would never stop respawning ;-) I have about 14K orens and I don't think there is really anything that could possibly be that expensive between now and the end of the game. However, I had already stored up so many cemetaur jaws, death dust, etc., from XP grinding in the fields crypt in Act IV that I decided to go back to a save game on the Dike since Dandelion was holding almost everything I need to complete those contract quests from Old Vizima. I took from Dandelion my second best sword (rune sword), around 50 each of Vitriol, Aether, Rebis, Quebrith, Vermillion and as much hard liquor as possible, Naezin salts and a winestone for the Nurse, as well as a few rubies and sapphires to trade with Druids for potions. The rest I have no use for.I sold my rune sword to the Fence near the Field Hospital and I found that I can use the Fence, Kalkstein and the Druids as a sort of storage of things I thought I might need, by selling everything to them that I can't carry. So far Chapter V is working out great for me despite no innkeeper.

I don't consider this to be a spoiler, but important: BE CAREFUL. So far as I know, the Fence doesn't stay. Deal with Kalkstein and whoever plays quartermaster for pro-Order people (haven't played that thread, yet, so I don't know who the characters would be in that situation; I'm guessing the Order's base (which I eliminated pretty early, ha ha! that was fun) probably has some sort of quartermaster inside it? Well, don't tell me: I'll find out next run-through).Oh, wait: DVris: It's just occurred to me: If you play in line with the Order: do you get a different Fence than I got, one who has his or her own home? (You have my permission to spoil me on this one.) Because the one I'm thinking of has no home I know of.As for using Kalkstein for storage (without the mod I'm using, that is): yes, at this point we have so much money we can afford to pay people to store the stuff we actually end up pulling back out.Of course, Kalkstein won't buy everything of yours, so this is sort of a lousy way of trying to store items... but since, as pro-Scoia'tael, I was able to find someone who'll buy most of the stuff I end up collecting: I'm guessing you, as pro-Order, also have just such a person, so maybe you're able to "store" at least most of your stuff that way. Still: I prefer using the mod: after installing it, I didn't have to worry about inventory space any longer. One of the unfortunate things about this game, I've decided, is the uselessness, after Ch.2, of most of the merchants -- except for the booksellers, of course (and, at one point in Ch.3, the merchants who sell the rings) -- for anything except buying your stuff and making you more and more money you might never use. I mean... once you've managed to scrape up enough money in Ch.2 to finally buy your special new updated jacket: you've got nothing left to buy for the rest of the game except for whatever books and scrolls you haven't read yet... and a ring. There really should be more stuff we have to buy.I mean, by Chapter 5, we're not extremely wealthy, exactly, but we're definitely comparatively well-off (that is, comparatively in relation to the average citizen, I gather)... and we have nothing to do with our money. We can't even establish a college fund for Alvin with this money. We just keep collecting more and more of it... if we want more we can always punch a few people out at the local bar... and we have nothing to spend it on.Oh wait, yeah I forgot there's also that updated silver sword we buy in Ch.3... but that's about it.Anyway...Sad thing about that mod: while it lets Kalkstein hold your stuff for you, he no longer buys anything from you. But... I didn't need the money that that point, anyhow, that I could've gained by selling alchemical 'overcollections'.Seeker:As for Kalkstein being trustworthy for Geralt... I'm not really sure how trustworthy Geralt really would find Kalkstein, a guy he probably likes and who likes Geralt in return, but with a lack of trustworthy people in Old Vizima with relatively safe domiciles... yeah, he'd sort of be the most trustworthy, all things considered. At least this would be the case if you're playing pro-Scoia'tael. Maybe it's different if you're pro-Order, though I doubt it.

@ Evnissyen you make your point about Kalkstein it also comes down to what side you pick as well and besides I just like Kalkstein LOL he is a odd ball

Thanks for the heads up - I put most of my stuff with the Fence because he buys almost anything. I'm playing the neutral option, so I don't think I can trade with the Order quartermaster or the Elf quartermaster, but I'll try to find him and confirm. Where is the Order quartermaster? I think the smith from the Order will forge weapons for me, but I haven't found the quartermaster.I seem to recall before going back to a saved game on the dike, I saw the Fence or some other townsperson who looked like the same character model as the Fence, joining the fight with Garkains and other creatures when attempting to escort Shani to the Swamp, and he died. Maybe this is why he sometimes does not remain?

He is near the way to the Swamp cemetery from Old Vizima. Just a bit left to it. He looks like a Temerian soldier/ prison guard with the red Order uniform.
