Age of braindance decadence: We didn’t get rid of our problems, we multiplied them

A very brief description of the counselling method used to replenish lost empathy and humanity is in the 2020 rulebook. It's not far off what you have described, though it's more graphic about the means of getting to therapy...

Characters can relive/re-experience key life events as part of the fight against cyberpsychosis. (<--------opportunity of clever writers to hike up some trauma and drama).
I seem to remember 'flashbacks' in the origional Max Payne game... I'm certain I remember something about a house, ended up on fire...

Good potential use for 'traumatic' experiences from the characters lifepath...

Ooh! I like this idea, Chris!

Have certain Lifepath options give you a cutscence, image sequence, audio or even gameplay chunk to reflect those choices as you start play. Have them show up later, even.

That's good!

I'm starting to remember...

In the origional Max Payne, you started out at your home, 3 years before the end of the game. You open the door, and the place has been turned over. As you go through the house you hear your wife and baby being attacked and eventually shot up by supposedly random junkies.

Let's face it, that's enough to get anyone to flip out. And so, Max Payne, Vigilante is born...

I think that reliving certain traumatic experiences in the lifepath, (and maybe even earlier gameplay - que dead girlfriend number 1,) could be a good way of making cyberpsychosis therapy interactive and involving.

Actually, I could probably use some therapy myself... I'm writing some notes for a 2020 campaign and I just wrote up the introduction my brand new players, (who have never played 2020,) are going to get to the Bozo's.
As the players enter a corridor in an apartment block, they find a Bozo, aman, a woman and a 6 year old girl. The Clown has the woman at gunpoint and is going to kill her unless the daughter throws a cream pie into her dads face. The cream pie is concentrated acid...
Yeah... I should probably book an appointment...

Letting the idea mingle - systematic evocative unfolding (SEU) works in two stages, partial then full resolution - with the ultimate goal being obtaining a new perspective and a sense of resilience on a previously puzzling or interruptive experience. There's a whole lot of concepts (EFT is a neo-humanistic therapy) which can be used to add real depth to storytelling.

In game, I think the Lifepath options can end up being a mini game that happens if your empathy drops too low. At this point you need to address traumas or revisit puzzling or unresolved dilemmas in order to avoid psychosis (or to use a more modern term, disassociation). (------> can imagine some kind of flashback scene with dialogue choices etc). Another option could be (to avoid waste of programming effort) that characters could play that mini game in therapy in order to replenish their empathy.....

If you really really want to get heads spinning, then you have a possible model for mind hacking another character, using the same SEU system.

Everyone gets fucked up thoughts sometime mate, don't panic. But you'll know yourself if your troubles interrupt your life projects, then I find it can be helpful to talk. But i'm sure this isn't the best place for that connection.

But reading your experience reminded me of something as well, I've a memory of playing the original game, was quite young at the time. I can still remember how quickly the game could go from feeling the excitment about new tech or something, to being really quite horrible, gore all over the walls and dead. One of the open edges of the game wasn't so much the violence, but the prospect of it, and how quickly things could go from okay to bad. The drop would come quickly, especially if you had a GM with low empathy stats...it felt a lot closer to survival of the fittest than my day to day ever really did.

I'd like it better if the daughter was the Bozo and she was having her father throw it into her mother's face. Or vice-versa, whatever.

Reflecting that - it would also add an interesting tactical element if players had the choice to use that SEU mini game to intentionally go psycho.....there might be times in the game where going on a mindless rampage would make sense. Either end the madness, or make it worse. Either way, somebody's got to do something with the cream pie of destiny....

I was wondering what possible post could come after that exchance ending witha simple giggle lol.

Never did i expect that ^ tho lol

Came out of nowhere. What's next for this thread then?

How would you envisage players using braindance services - would it be a bit like "the fade" in Dragon age where you can walk about and interact, or would it be viewed in the 1st person, as if your right in it?

Or could it just be like walking into a theatre in GTA for boundless comic japes?

Also, any feedback on the therapy/empathy system? Would that fit in another place better? I'm still playing catch up on previous content.

I saw it more like Rekall from Total Recall.

You're 'experiencing' memories, so they should be 'relived'.

Braindance is an accepted part of therapy in 2020.

It's also part of the prison system, where they jack you into an eternity of bland horror. Cons prefer actual, horrible penal systems to the dance.

I always envisioned it as similar to the rig worn in Strange Days, though now, I wonder: is braindance only going to be pre-recorded input, or can the feed be modified on the fly?

Being sentenced to 20 years of living "brady bunch" sims in braindance will make you hate your mother for ever giving birth to you...

You would come out crazier than when you went in... but your vocabulary and fashion sense would be so indocrinated that no one would ever take you seriously again...

The porn industry would make out with everyone's credits with this new brain dance tech. When you see a porn star you could say "yep, I hit that."

And finally, the porn industry will prove that porn sex may look good, but actually, it's a lot of effort for nothing.

Then of course you get the darker side. people selling illegal snuff and murder dances...
