Having a steady internet connection is expensive in some countries.

Sorry about cutting out, Ward. I was tired. Hearing from you that The Missing Link works offline for PC is confusing to me.

I actually don't know if the PC version works offline or not. I have DSL so my PC is usually online all the time. I didn't think to try running Missing Link in offline mode and I uninstalled it once I finished it so I don't know if offline mode works for it or has been disabled. It just surprised me for a single-player DLC to require internet connection on 360 since I assume that consoles are less likely to have stable internet connections compared to PC's.

They're not in it for long term sustainability, like bankers they're in it for short term profit, that's why AAA development has become so expensive, they're taking massive risks in the hopes of landing a Skyrim or Diablo payday, instead of trying to please their customer base or maintain an output of quality realistically budgeted releases.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

It's always been the case for me that that's true (about PCs---my brother's laptop works the most consistently with the communal wifi pool our electronics drink from). Damn. I would have been interested to know if that was the case with TML. Ah well.

I have the Steam version of Missing Link, I run Steam offline almost permanently, and I had no problems. If it's bypassing Steam and using it's own checking (the way that TW2 did for a while), I might not have noticed. But it definitely works with Steam offline.

And on the bigger topic, there was a good article in Techdirt today...
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130416/18174622735/attention-game-developers-console-manufacturers-always-is-not-same-as-always-connectable.shtml

I liked this quote.
Keep that in mind when you hear statements from developers and console manufacturers about the public's apparently secret love for always-connected devices. Their "read" on the market is nothing more than them signalling a desire to put the customers' desires dead last.

Well, (formerly, haha) EA’s Creative Director Adam Orth would’ve told you to

The reality of the world that Adam Orth doesn't live in...

Screenshot taken about 2-and-a-half hours ago. Since then, it's downloaded just under 900MB. Nothing else was running on the network, this is as fast as it gets.

Oh, and it's the fastest connection available where I live.

(Edited for inability to read the clock correctly)

Well people have already invented ways around it. Emulated servers.

However, you don't really see this put into action because of the effort it would take (and money?).

Or if the game pulls off always online DRM poorly like AC2 you can just easily crack it. Simple.

Personally, I wouldn't risk doing any sort of piracy. A criminal record is just too much for me.

Damn.

Sorry about that, must be an absolute pain. I really don't have any right to ever complain when my internet dies for 5 minutes or something :p

But yeah, Orth hasn't really been up to date with his reality checks lately. He seems to believe that we all live in wonderful candy cane land, ruled by benevolent marshmallows that dip themselves in chocolate and willingly allows us to eat them. That's the problem with publishers for the past 5 years. They're so horribly out of touch with reality that it does make me frightful to think of what kind of demon must have possessed them to come to the mindbogglingly weird business decisions they've made.

Still, here's to hoping that the industry will change during the next generation of consoles.

@RSIK4 - Yup. Not unusual for many parts of the world. And the 4GB download that I started 7 hours ago is still saying 2 hours to go, because I needed to browse, which means my Steam download speed has dropped to around 30KB/S.

So how much of my precious bandwidth would an "always on" game vendor, or MS's new Xbox, think it appropriate to use to collect data to enhance my customer experience?

No, I don't think he stepped down - the terse MS comment gave the impression he was pushed. I don't think MS cared about him living in cloud cuckoo land regarding "always online", but they did care about him talking about something that hasn't been officially made public yet.

(And regarding Demut getting the company wrong :) )

Haha, oh you nincompoop! :p

Yeah it's hard to muster any sympathy for him but. I don't know.

I wish publishers would just stop with this DRM nonsense and stop focusing on the games they're supposed to sell to us. That's where their sole attention should be. Nothing else should matter!

I'm depressed. I had hoped it was all in my head that people who worked for companies like this were children in suits, or sweaters and hipster spectacles. Now we know. Tell'um Brucy Boy.

An interesting video I came across that discuss whether the gaming industry is about to collapse due to all its crap games recently.

I'm pretty sure that no gaming company will hire him. He would bring too much bad marketing to company. It would be like hiring Kim Jong-un.

Yeah, I know that gamers don't care much about facts.
