Another Radeon user having lockups making game not playable - description

Win 7, 64bit
Intel i7-870 (stock 2,93 GHz)
8GB RAM
XFX Radeon R9 280 (stock OC 933MHz)
Driver; tried both latest official Catalyst 14.5 and latest beta 15.4
PSU XFX XXX ProSeries850W

Im another customer who cant play the game due to lockups. Every time (which is every 5min) the game locks I have to hard-reset the computer. The screen turn into a grayish color with vertical stripes (and sometimes all black), while the sound keeps playing. The lockups are kinda random, mainly in cut-scenes (or when they are about to start) but also during gameplay. It happens all the time (havent been able to end the tutorial part yet), but it tend to happen on the same place multiple times. For now Im stuck at the cut-scene playing when Geralt and Vesimir enters the inn, right after seeing the first griffin attack. And now it locks every single time somewhere during this cut-scene. (When not locking up the game runs smooth.)

My rig is rock solid both in FurMark and in Valley, it makes no difference if graphics ingame is set to ultra or low. Actually I have set graphics to all low turning off every afterprocessing stuff, and actually downclocking my GPU to 840MHz (below stock, 850MHz). Furthermore Ive tried every trick and tip I can find in the forums. Nothing seems to make any difference. The 1.03 patch didnt make any difference either, still same lockup at the inn. The GPU temp was 64degrees Celsius, at my last lockup, so no heat issues here.

Looking forward to a solution.
/Matt

lulz, furmark. ;p no, you're not alone, saw another r9 280 user with sporadic crashes.

one thing you could try is this: http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/38652-Solved-Bex64-exe-error?p=1686484

completely different error, but messing with feature support levels in dxcpl from the windows SDK, or application compatibility toolkit (ACT) can fix some issues.

problem being, consoles are GCN 1.0 (in amd terms), r9 is GCN 1.2. so there are some architecture differences.

Strange, I heard about players troubles with a R9 285 but it sounds like more a memory trouble.

R9 290 here and not a single crash since release. All maxed (tweaked foliage, hairs and so on ...)
I wonder how many players using a R9 285 are playing TW3 without a single crash. (I know 2 they are best friend of mines). Check your settings (bios and so on)

Maybe you can ask your friends about thier settings?
It will help a lot to find what is going on.

Exactly which bios settings are you referring to?

That's not correct for all r9. The r9 280 is GCN 1.0.

I have a MSI R9 280 and i get some crashes too. Expecially during or after i visit a cave. The game froze 1 or 2 secs while the sound get louder and in loop, and after i get a black screen, that force me to restart the PC. I checked all the temperatures but all its normal. If i dont visit the caves i can play for 3 hours long (the first day i did it). After i visit Keira in her secret location i get crashes... im now trying to re-download the game, but i dont think will fix anything.
It may be a problem with video cards memory?
