As far as I can tell you are suppose to build hands from the faces of the poker dice you roll, and than reroll after betting again in order to adjust your hand. Only problem is I have no idea what the hell the runic symbols mean, or what constitutes a decent hand. It was possibly one of the most confusing mini games I played in an RPG since blitz ball in X-2.

Mystified by what exactly? What runic symbols are you referring to?

Do you recognize the symbols INSIDE the different shapes? I, II, III, IV etc?

Thanks for image! I had no idea what you were talking about actually, and thought I missed new gameplay or something. Well, number one is a logic circle with a dot in it. Two is two straight lines, or the roman numeral two if you will. Three is a triangle, four is a square, five is a pentagram and six is a hexagram.

To answer your question, no I do not find these mysterious at all. In fact, I've never been so good at understanding poker as I am in Witcher dice poker games. ^_^

EDIT: To clarify, I really suck at poker. I never know what kind of hand I have. The numbers on dice in dice poker are easily grasped by me, but we're all good and bad at various things.

Oh I get that part, but what the hell does the rest mean. Also how does it fit in to hands?

The rest doesn't mean anything.

And treat numbers as different card figures - but here you're limited to six of them.

So for example, if your hand is III-III-III-V-V - it's a full house

It's early morn where I live, and I'm not sure I follow. I belive I explained it as good as I can. You mean the symbols on the dice right? The higher the value of dice the better, the more of one and the same value the better.

The shapes mean nothing, it's just flavor, it's just the numbers that matter.

It's just basic poker rules... That's it.

Oh is that right. Well thats actually pretty simple I thought the different star figures surrounding the numbers had greater significance.

It's basically 5 card poker. If you know how to play that, then you'll understand dice poker.

Now now, let's play nice. If nothing else you could develop additional rules for more challenge. A six beats a five, but the shining star of the five negates the power of the hexagram and allows you to do another roll without losing. Or some such. I was a genius coming up with new card games and rules when I was a kid. Mainly because I never understood already existing card games and their rules.

I always wished it would resemble poker more, like no "5 of a kind" for instance. I'm not sure how that could be managed, the only thought I recall having was perhaps if you picked 5 dice to pay with out of a pool of 10, and each dice wasn't simply 1-6, perhaps a subset of those numbers (so a number could appear twice on a die), or a wider range of numbers (again not every possible number could appear on a die). If the player knows the potential combinations they could get from their selected dice, and perhaps the other players dice, the result might be a game with a little more strategy and a lot less randomness.

(this idea has not been completely thought through, but there's got to be some way of making the game better)

Great idea, as long as you could choose to roll the dice(discard the dice you wished) after having been given a hand or selected your random dice value. Or why else have dice instead of cards? And I guess the hands were to be open from start, because I don't know how you roll dice without anyone else also seeing the result. Not that covering the result up would really amount to anything other than cheating.

"I got...eh..what do you got? Full house? Yeah, I beat that. I did. See? So there! Pay up!"
If we are to go back to ordinary poker I say ,as always, to implement player choice :)victory:) so I can play either poker or the dice poker easily understood by me. If we're going all out poker I've had it. Might as well join Bootblack and shine boots. I'd make more money and it would be more fun for me I reckon.

Funny thing in my case, I didn't understand the rules..I've never played poker before but by experience you understand it! Then it becomes addictive :) In witcher one I remember Zoltan saying to me that there are no rules for it..you've to play it first! I took that advice and have been broke for ages then I made saves from half of the game just to win lol Now, in witcher 2 I get so many cool and epic things from Skalen :p till he "plays me no more"!

I understood the rules just fine, but I *NEVER* worked out how it calculated how much you'd won.
