as long as you stay on the road or flat terrain there is no problem

I've had a few problems with the horse, nothing that can't be fixed in a few seconds though. I usually walk if it's ~400 steps or whatever that measurement is. Horse all the way elsewhere because I rarely use fast travel. Game is to beautiful to be skipping around all the time.

It's a role-playing game. So I like to play not for minmaxing, but to play like I'm actually in the world of Geralt. That means: short distances I walk. Long distances I ride Roach. When on horseback, I stay on the paths. When I have to go off the paths, I walk.

I wish I could call Roach when I board a boat. It would be nice to have Roach stand in the front of the boat when I sail to another part of Velen. It's a bit weird to end up kilometers away, and then when I whistle, Roach is immediately there again.

I for the most part just use the auto terrain following that Roach has when on paths, any other time I pretty much just run/walk

How come the horse mechanic is crap, it has its downside but it's definitely NOT crap. This world is huge, the sense of space and distance is 100% there. Roach still gets her job done well. Imo the horse riding is pretty cool despite its bug and glitches.

Except for getting to Skellige I don't use fast travel at all,so riding Roach saves me time and it makes sense.

the horse mechanics are acceptable, but its annoying when roach gets too scared & throws you off .. right in a pack of beasties. What would be good is roach just running away for 10-20 seconds to get the hell away from said beasties, instead of throwing you to the wolves & other skallywags.
I just noticed last night roach doesn't have reins, unless its a glitch or the devs got lazy.. it just doesnt look right.

You have to pay attention to the scare meter lol. I once got too excited killing a lot of wolves in white orchard on horseback and didn't pay attention to the scare meter, and Roach dropped me right between those crazy wolves and I had to load my savegame and began from the start slaughtering them all over again.

You have a good set of blinders? You use the spell to clam him down?

I like horse-riding in the game. Sure, the first time in the area I walk/run because I want to check every nook and cranny. But afterwards I gallop like hell wherever I can. I love it!

When I am exploring a new area, I'll travel on foot. I use the horse very rarely. I don't have too much trouble with the horse's handling though.

never had an issue with roach. i lvoe to trot everywhere and i dont fast travel. i've had some awesome bugs tho -- roach started floating on the way to oxenfurt and that's when i knew that horses are not creatures who enjoy rocky terrain. g times g times.

as for the scare meter -- it's supposed to be a punishment. it's also true to one of the events in the books (the roach geralt had was very skittish and he was worried she'd throw him and dump him at some crucial moment) so imo it actually makes a lot of sense.

I rarely run into problems with roach, and i ride quite often, be it on the well trodden path or in the middle of some forest; I tried to use fast travel as little as possible because the game is simply too beautiful to miss on the scenery.

I like to ride even if riding is often glitched.
Anyway about the scare meter, there's a special decoction which helps a lot.
Another one I use especially for the urban environment is the werewolf's one.

That's a deliberate mechanic to balance out the advantages of mounted combat (without it it would be really strong, especially at low levels). Blinders do help, so does casting axii on the horse (which is the only thing you can cast when mounted), but you can also use nekker warrior decoction to remove fear completely (in my case a guy at the Hierarch square was selling the recipe, iirc)

wow im strongly disagree, especially once you can jump with the horse and then being able to fall from a mountain without getting any damage etc
horse is also way faster, by far

After you get used to the mechanics it's no problem.
But Geralt seems to run fast enough to not need a horse at all. So I rarely use it.

My way to travel is:

1. Exploring new areas on foot, preferably off-road
2. Rushing through explored areas on Roach, preferably on-road
3. Never using fast-travel inside one region (Skellige, Velen/Novigrad, etc.)
