Anyone Getting Risen?

Since I finished TWEE I kinda feel my PC has lost its purpose ;)So I was reading about this game, and everyone is saying it is a great game, but my main concern is: does the game have combat/control similar to Witcher? I used a controller and Pinnacle Game profiler when I played TW, but I don't know if Risen will play the same way, if it will lend itself to gamepad control. I tried playing NeverWinter Nights 2 with a gamepad; big mistake :'(

Risen and The Witcher have quite different combat systems. As for how how a different game controller and a proprietary software package interacts with your subjective perception of the game play ... :whatthe:Risen combat is influenced by opponent, weaponry, skill level, armour, movement, timing and environment and encourages vigilant defence and patience. I've read some horrible reviews of Risen where the reviewer acted like it was an action RPG with massive moaning over the percieved borked combat and the resulting frustration :) Risen isn't a mollycoddling RPG, dying is definitely an option./Dan

I'm planing on getting Risen, just to see the change from Gothic.I the combat seems, from what I've seen, very different. However, I'd suggest that you'd look up reviews of the game.@d_ahure, where did you read that? All reviews I've read so far were more positive than negative.

I'm personally enjoying Risen. The majority of the reviews are favourable. The RPGWatch 'Risen Review Flood' posts collect a large host of reviews. A small portion of those are pure hatchet jobs by Console princes and princesses. Those are pretty unanimous in that they borked understanding combat, rant that it is largely derivative of newer big budget titles (let's just say they are pretty clueless and know next to nothing about the history of the genre) and more often than not played a short time on the 360 port but post the review as bot PC and 360./Dan

d_ahura , you confused me more than I was before. I have read some reviews. here is what I want to know: in Risen, do you hit a button to swing your sword or do you click on an enemy and select 'attack' from a sub-menu?

A specific question is more easily answered :) You use mouse and keyboard keys to control your actions. Middle mouse button is combat mode on/off. In combat mode on left mouse button is an attack move and right mouse button is blocking. Click the mouse and the sword swings.A little bit of Google-Fu and I found posts on their forum pertaining to Risen./Dan

So the actual control in combat is kinda like witcher... are there multiple attack moves with the sword? like in witcher, do you need to time your attacks?

I'm still waiting for the prestigious RPGCodex Magazine review of Risen, but it looks good so far :hmmm:

OK, so I got Risen and after just a little playtime fell in love with it. I am liking it a LOT. I don't think that it has the rich back story of Geralt and his pals, but this game lets you build your own backstory. Also I am just beginning so that can change.Best part is the controls. It is full third person, not over the shoulder like TW, and your character can walk AND run in all directions! (fancy that huh?)I am so far very very early in the game, it is clear that this game will eat up the rest of my natural life, as I am a complete-ist.But even from my limited experience, I recommend it to all Witchers out there, especially those that enjoy fun, console-y controls. combat that demands dexterity and timing, and RPG elements that are deep (TWEE) but not too deep (NeverWinter Nights 2! yikes!).

I 'm playing Risen. I 'm in chapter 4 now. It's a good game, i enjoy it a lot, but i 'm not in love with it. I like the combat, it's more thinking the right move, than clicking like crazy. Also, my opinion is that it's based on parry, so, without a shield, the players will face serious problems, as the enemies are very strong. I like the dungeons. The dungeons are the best part of Risen's map, because the rest of the sites are all the same: forests and mountains, surrounded by sea (we 're on an island). It hasn't the atmosphere the first two games of Piranha Bytes had, Gothic and Gothic 2. But the dungeons are awesome! Hidden, you never know when you 'll find another one, dark and dangerous, with many chamber/tomb-riddles to solve (you know, the "how will i open this gate" stuff) and big. This is a strong point of the game, the map. When you think "So, this is the whole map? Only this?" there you are, in a new area. And then in another one, and so on, until you realize that the map is at least twice the size you first thought. They know how to create multiple level maps, with cliffs, mountains and hidden caves, that's for sure! The story is not the strongest i 've ever seen, but it's OK. The same goes with skills. The dialogues are very good; clever and, at some points, funny. At last, they understood that cutting dialogues is not the best move for a RPG (they did that in Gothic 3). When i finish it, i 'll play as a mage, to see how magic works on combat, because i tell you, the enemies are strooong! To summarize, i have to say that after the disaster of Gothic 3, Piranha Bytes has won me again. Risen is a good, quality game.

Thanks for the review of the game!(Personally, I'm not able to play other RPG's until the new adventure is done, but I'm closing in on Chapter 1, and I hope to be able to play a new RPG one of these days -- they used to be my favorite, until I was possessed by The Witcher. :-[)When Dragon Age: Origins comes out, I'll be interested to hear what you think of that, too.

I'd say that if somebody enjoyed Gothic 1 and 2, then they'll enjoy Risen. As long as it doesn't crash every 5 Minutes like mine does....

Hey, such a pity! I don't know if other players have problems, but one more thing i can say about this game is that it never crashed so far, not one time. I must say that it's almost bug free (almost, because some little graphic issues appear here and there)!Corylea, thank you, it's an honor to be the official Other-RPG-Reviewer of The Witcher Forum. ;DSpeaking of possession, when you play a RPG and you catch yourself thinking of The Witcher, the game you play is not... how should i say this? It's not enough. :hmmm: It happened to me at the second chapter of Risen. :( Well, it isn't a rare thing, of course, to think of The Witcher! :teeth: Hey, i 've got an idea! When we post our opinion about a game, we should write if, and how many times we thought of The Witcher during this game! Eh? What do you say? :D

Double post, because what i have to say here is important, i think. I 'd like to read other players' opinions, too.And i am starting with a big frown. :(It's about the final boss fight. Please, forgive me, i 'll quote myself from an other forum:NO WAY!If i wasn't mature enough to not let a game piss me off, i would be very angry right now. But i 'm not angry. I 'm just disappointed. This end may be good for an action game, but not for a Role Play Game. OK, it's an action rpg, but still, rpg.
Changing the axe with a sword wasn't much of a problem, i did it nicelly and fast. (And if i had a mage? What then? ) But i'm not gonna spent hours on running through falling blocks, dodging the ray, and watch out for the titan's feet, not to crash me down! Hell, this is not an option. I just won't finish the game.I already reach the titan twice, starting to hit him with my sword, in which i have the ninth level skill, and still nothing. No damage. The titan crashed me.And... that's it.
Such a fight could work if we had a pause, like an original rpg, but in action? No way.Piranhas, what the hell did you do?

Played this game , its solid game if there is nothing better to do but not even close to Witcher or Dao.Game just dont feel epic i mean it lacks on good story and whille playing this game you dont get any feelings towards character in it or world.I also dont like combat system since you dont know when to time your block and when to attack , Witcher have much better cs than this game.Dungeons and world of Risen looks good, tho nothing we havent seen so far in other rpgs , but overall there is no epic feeling of playing this game no story which would hang ppl to play it till end.

Is it just me or does Risen get more bad rep than good? This worries me and I think I should pass on this one. Trying DA-O though. :peace:

i just played Risen ... and what a shock to my system.initially i positively despised it ... the screens for the character attributes, inventory, etc look like they came from some time capsule from the 1980s ... wow! unbelievably ugly and designed for VGA graphics. Also, i've never played Gothic, so the combat initially totally confused and frustrated me... BUT being the miser that i am -- and having paid good money for the bloody game! -- i persevered, and there is good news. I was finally able to get my brain around the combat, which turned out to be pretty decent and the world is contiguous! you can walk over every single inch of that island you wash up on, climb things, jump down (with acrobatics!) and it's very rich. The dialogue is quite good and occasionally quite funny. So i got to quite like it (even if the character screen continued to make me shudder every time i saw it)but then there was the endgame --- WTF?? so i've played 99.9% of the game and will never actually finish it because i refuse to play stupidly difficult and pointless endgames like that.so i'd say i got my money's worth, but in the end, was left with a bitter aftertaste.

hmm...god to know :hmmm:I was about to plal risen but i was skeptic, since i didn't like too much either gothic 2 and 3. I hate such silly pointless endgames (see Assassin creed) - simply unfinished.... now i'm totally skeptic ;D

I truly enjoyed Risen. Having played the Gothic games I had no problem with the combat (come to think of it I have never been stumped by a combat control scheme ever). I did three separate campaigns to get through most of the locations and plots. The ending is a bit of a let-down but that has AFAIK been the case with most cRPGs I've played. Latest culprits being Dragon Age: Origins, Sacred 2 and Divinity II; Ego Draconis. They like Risen do however make it up by being brilliant in other ways. DA:O is incredibly polished and tense, Sacred 2 is a quest feast extraordinaire and D2:ED has a lot of novelties and tight intense story lines as well as draconic combat, mind reading and being novice friendly. I've just bought a DSi since it seems to be the premier cRPG platform as well as having a lot of adventure games and Zelda. Any DS RPG recommendations?/Dan

I had planned on getting Risen this month, but instead I ended up going crazy on Steam. Which is good, because I picked up the Witcher. If you like Gothic 1 or 2, grab Risen. Same type of game. Download the demo and see for yourself. I still plan on getting Risen, but with DA:O and TW on my plate (As well as a bunch of other games) it can wait.
