Anything to do once you beat the game?

Ive been playing Witcher 3 very slowly...I hate to rush a game like this and finish it then have all the patches release after the fact. So, when I do play I kill a lot of time reading the books, sorting inventory, and have stuck around in velen for weeks. Ive yet to enter Novigrad or skelliege and am only level 12. After the 1.07 patch I plan to really start progressing forward with the game and stop dragging my feet.

I have a few questions however that have cropped up. I want to do a full alchemy build. I am a bomb whore, and cant wait to unlock cluster bombs. My concern however is that by the time I get all that unlocked, and get my build where I want it, the game will be nearly over. It seems once the game is over, there isnt really much to do. It also seems most of the top gear is over level 30, and ive read many ppl ending the game around level 34 or 35, and once the quests are all done, leveling becomes nearly impossible.

Another concern ive had is the leveling itself. Im a completionist and will want to do every single quest. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the quest level's and locations. There are level 10 and under quests for example all over velen, I came across a new quest the other day that was level 7 or so, and by now Im level 12. It seems it is going to be easy to miss quests and out level them by mistake. The map doesnt seem to be set up so that you move on to specific areas at certain level ranges, its just all jumbled together. Ill see one "?" on the map have a level 20 mob guarding a treasure, and just a few steps away a level 9 bandit camp. Its not a huge negative really, but it screws with my completionist psychy a little, because I realize I cant put a pattern to anything - I will literally have to crawl every corner of the map to make sure nothing gets missed.

Anyone who has beat the game who could maybe comment on my concerns? No spoilers please.

Iam also a completionist and had same issues, I started following main roads around towns to get all notice boards atleast, then I didnt stumble into new lowbie quests.

Also if your 18-19 you can pretty much do whole velen. But before that its like you said crawling.

EDIT : I ment exploring wise not quests.

Another thing I forgot to mention that Ive wondered about is gwent. Ive been traveling around playing all the people in velen and getting their cards...Here again though, once you beat a player, it feels somewhat pointless to keep playing him, as he plays much the same cards, in much the same manner, so al lthe games feel the same to me. Once you beat someone once I can beat them over and over again. This means gwent will only last as long as there are still people in the world I havent played. Looking at the atlas shows that while there are several players all over the map, its not exactly a ton. Ive heard of ppl playing gwent for hours and hours however, and Im wondering how? I would love it if it were possible, but All the people Ive played so far, I beat them in 1 or 2 games and then its pointless to keep playing that person. If this holds true with every gwent player I dont see hours of gwent play.

I did do this as well. For the most part I think I have all the quests at least active, but I still managed to stumble on a few that weren't tied to a notice board. It just feels like random level quests are peppered in random locations. When I first got to velen I kinda stuck around the area that I entered the zone in, thinking that everything in that area would be for my level, then I would perhaps slowly progress into the other parts of the map, but I realized that wasnt how it works. Way down in the south east part of the map you find a level 7 or so quest... I was level 5 when I left white orchard. Its as if the game expected me to get to velen and immediately circle the entire map,and thats not how I generally approach a new area in a game like this, because it feels very disorganized to jump from one coast to the other.

Yea its definitely not like iam used to either, so I gave more or less up in the end doing things in order. You have to get used to that.

But xp isnt that imporntant, Iam more into story and exploration.

If you want a ultimate playthrough I think you need to beat the game and remember where things was. You can get it in some degree but you will always stumble into things, its just so much stuff.

For a completionist this game is a nightmare or a dream, depends how you look at it :)

I'm the same I racked up 100's of hours play going around after I finished all main, secondary & treasure hunts & completed everything. I looked up a quest list & I did find about 4 I hadn't come across in skellage & a few in Velen but these were minor Quests that took minutes then just went around killing everything I could just to get my Lvl up so I could get the LvL 37 Harpy sword but without quests it was an extremely slow process. I'm playing though again but on DM but this time just concentrating on Quests & picking different options just to see what happens.

I do not think the developers intended for someone to do every single quest in the same play through. Different level quests being mixed in the same area allows for a different experience on subsequent play throughs I would imagine. If you arrive in Novigrad now and have out leveled several quests there, then perhaps on the next play through you would head to Novigrad sooner, skipping many of the side quests you did in Velen the first time through.

Personally, I play much the same as you. I have never fast traveled and I am only in Skellige at lvl 23 after 130 hours of playing. I run into quests that are a lower level than me, but I do them anyway for the story. I understand that it is a consequence of the way I have chosen to play. It is not necessarily a fault in the design of the game.

1. Meditate until the release of the expansions
2. Assault the forums asking CDPR to add New Game + and/or some of the characters back into the game so you can talk to them after you've completed the story

This is what I did with my completed game after I beat it. First, turn the difficulty up, if it isn't already. I finished the game at 34, and my gear, weapons and signs are already absurdly strong. Killing anything in my way is a cake walk, so turning up the difficulty is a no brainier. Second, go into the options menu>gameplay>display>hud config, and turn off everything except your health bar, so that when you get into a fight your health bar shows, also leave things on like enemy HP and Horse stamina, etc. The screen will be completely empty if your just walking through the woods or hanging out in a village. I feel like this kind of adds another level of immersion to the game, and it was kind of satisfying when I didn't really have the mini map constantly showing me which way to go for a particular active quest. Of course, there wont be any real main quest, or secondary quest line things to do, so when you come across a quest or ? that you haven't done yet, it just make's it feel that much more rewarding. I play on xbox so if i do have to look at where I'm going, I just pull up the map through the menu screen quick and check to see that I'm at least going in the direction of something. I have a ton of ? to do still, and I'm also discovering that I haven't done any of the horse races in the islands or in velen. Keep those things in mind, mainly because they're just fun. I personally enjoy playing the game so much that I've taken a liking to just going around and looking at stuff and taking screen shots. I'm thinking about starting a new game and picking the exact opposite choices that I've picked in my main game save. Hope this helps.

The main quest in Novigrad is 10 and the follow up is 7, which is beyond weird.

But that just proves you cant really do anything in order.

well, no matter what order you do things in wont change the fact that you gotta do the lvl 10 quest to trigger the lvl 7 quest.

I do not think there is a way to do everything in a single play through and if you do you will end up doing level 7 quests and such at level 20. What I think the logic behind this is to make each run through unique. If you say want to start in the southern part of Valen you can because there are some quests down there... you can go any which way and end up doing quests in that area.

For free roam I have a character saved at level 18. 18 I have found to be the best for free roam... a large mob of level 5-10 can still be deadly to you if not dealt with correctly... you can take on a level 20+ creature... and the really dangerous ones you simply avoid till later. This level here I have found to be the best for free roaming and exploring as I feel like 30+ I will just be killing everything.

What I hope for is after I get around to completing the game and getting the level to where things are too easy there will be either a player made mod that makes everything harder at a higher level OR a developer based DLC that allows for such a thing. I am ok with either....

You're in luck sir, I'm playing a great player made difficulty mod on my second play through called: Better Combat Enhnaced

Here's a short description taken from the mod page detailing what the mod does:

The good old Better Combat for Witcher 2 has come to this new chapter. A mod that strives to create a better gameplay experience for what it concerns combat, with changes to rebalance the difficulty curve in the game, improvements on combat dynamics, tailoring of skills so that all of them are useful with no clear overpowered choice that put all the others to shame, and so on and so forth.

The enhanced version introduces new changes in the tree layout, for a substantial revision of the gameplay giving more freedom to players in the creation of their preferred builds and some modification and balancing on skills that was no possible before. Also a slightly slower XP curve is introduced in this version, to counter the problematic in the vanilla game of leveling too fast in the last third of the game.

I was going to suggest this mod to the OP as well, as it does 3 things that I really disliked in the vanilla game which he also touched on:

1. Slows down XP gain slightly. This gives you a little more freedom to explore and not have to worry about out-leveling a lot of your quests.
2. Removes the tier requirements in skill trees. Another great change that removes skill tier requirements, opening up a range of builds not possible in the vanilla game. Great for the OP for example, as he could unlock cluster bombs straight away.
3. Rebalanced the difficulty curve. Lastly and the most important for me is the the mod author has gone through and meticulously rebalanced skills, bonuses, items and more so that the game is no longer the walk in the park vanilla is. I play on the hardest difficulty and I can't express how much more fun I'm having on my second play through. It's so refreshing to actually have to prepare before tough fights, use potions, signs, everything at your disposal. That feeling just wasn't there for me in vanilla. Judging by this mods increasing popularity, I'm not alone there.

I'm looking forward to CDPR dropping their red kit. The mod scene for this game is sure to go off.
