Are alternative weapons usefull or just loot?

I mean weapons like hammers, picks, short sword, sword of the blue mountains, etc. I've been playing around with the Halbard, which has a wide swing arc and can hit multiple enemies in one swing. But has anyone else found the other types effective?

They are just loot and for-fun items from my experience.

I never tried to fight with that kind of weapons, they seem to be there just because... there is even some guy who fights with a hammer or something the whole game but hardcore is fighting without weapons and naked..ups with only pants.

The Blackjack and Club in the dungeon sequence are rather effective, with a high Stun bonus. Some of the other weapons are good enough to use for a while in Act I, especially the Guisarme (Halberd). And yeah, it's fun to go around bashing bandits with an oar or a rake.

I'll play around with them more after 2.0, probably in arena mode, but I think other weapons should be viable. I was able to lace my Halbard with whirl and made mincemeat of Dimitri and friends in the troll trouble quest. And blunt weapons should not only cause stun, but perhaps knockdown and even cause slight damage when blocked. Just some thoughts.

I should start trying to mod; all ideas but no experince doing it. :(

You're not a true witcher until you beat a dragon to death with a shovel.

Operator's staff was a good weapon, does a lot of damage and weapon effects are really nice

When playing Iorveth's path, make sure you have a broom (or shovel or scoop, I found the broom the best choice) eqipped when sneaking into Henselts camp. After you get captured by Shilard, there's a scene when his mage admires your beautiful witcher weapon - and I almost peed myself, I was laughing so hard. So yes, those things can be quite useful - for comic relief.

Yes! Not only that, but when you go to threaten Henselt to get his blood... I was using an oar at the time.

That Espada?, the two handed sword that resembles the one Letho uses is quite tasty. Does fairly good damage, performs area of affect attacks even if you've not got whirl and looks bloody cool though it's quite slow and doesn't always turn up on a playthrough though I found it quite early on.

LOL aaahhhhh that sooo funny.
Man getting chased and beaten with a spoon.

As the saying goes 'A spoon for a weapon...It's blunt so it'll hurt more'

If I ever became a serial (cereal) killer the spoon would be my choice of weapon.

There's an axe which says it's great for splitting heads. However, when I tried to kill an enemy with it, his head wasn't split :(.
