Are there different combat moves?

Its probable that this has been posted allready and I'm sorry for not looking harder but I was woundering if there were different combat moves in the game.

I seem to find my self doing different things as I spaz click and hit the movment keys and I was woundering if there was a specific way to replicate these different moves and if so how?

Any input on this would be apreciated as the tutorial realy seems to suck in this game.

You only have "Light attack" and "Heavy Attack" (LMB and RMB respectively) and you create combos by mixing them up and adding in signs, bombs etc.

You can use the "Light Attack" to quickly dash to an enemy and slash him, just click LMB when you are are near (but not in melee range) of an opponent.

I've been investigating the very same thing. What appears to be the case is sword swings are both randomly generated, and contextual. We can't altar individual attacks via WASD, as far as I can tell. Here's a couple observations:

-If you are at an oblique angle to enemy, Geralt will automatically do a cartwheel attack resulting in multiple hits. Very powerful.

-You can interrupt a heavy attack from a human opponent with a light attack, so you don't always have to rely on block.

-Throw in Aard or Ignii as you chain attacks to keep enemies at bay, multiply damage, and buy yourself time. They don't attack if incinerate is in effect.

-If you knock someone down, seems to me you should always follow up with a heavy attack; they can't dodge.

-Use light attack for fast enemies, heavy attack for armored and strong enemies. You can mix it up at your discretion. Sometimes there are good reasons to do so.

-Don't just spam the sword attack, this will get you into trouble. Try to find the rhythm.

One more thing, the tutorial is the journal. Read it.

I don't think it's mentioned anywhere, but you can "chain" the attacks like in TW1 by attacking when you see the blue (LMB) or yellow (RMB) trail from your sword. Combat log shows increased damage if you manage to get in several strikes in this manner. Dodging and parrying seem to disrupt the chain.

A very good observation and I think you're right. The blue and orange tracers are now our new indicators for linking moves, similar to TW1. If this is true...those wily bastards at CDPR.I believe damage multiplies in this way; the more uninterrupted attacks, the more powerful the damage. Need to test it more, but I think if you chain a sword swipe with Ignii or Aard, you also get a hefty damage bonus.

'oblique' shit, lol, had to look that up, nice one... still not exactly sure what you ment by it, but nice noneot the less.

I'm not sure I agree with the not spam clicking as I seem to get the most results out of it, though all in all thats why I asked as it seems on occasion my hits will do a lot of damage as well as very little. Ill try out the oblique thing (if I get your meaning, you mean at a diagonal angle to the target rather than to its side or straight infront), if thats the case then that makes some sense as in trying to replicate that chain move I tried hitting the side key and then the forward key as if to whip my character into it, and while that didnt allways work it seemed to more than not.

Either way this whole thing seems quite easy as if you spaz click fast enough on one target they cant seem to hit you back.

PS: I love that I can say shit on this forum, how often do you see that lol!

What are we ? Some preteens ? We can cuss all we want!
Spam clicking usually works if you face one opponent, not so much on groups and enemies with shields/those who block and parry. Just experiment a bit, once you get used to it, its almost second nature.

"What are we ? Some preteens ? We can cuss all we want!"

It sure feels like that on most of these forums lol, funny when its for an M rated game too but whatever.

Anyhow, still feels like im not exactly using much skill to succeed at this.

The secret of combat is avoiding getting hit, use any technique you like to achieve this.

I use a different technique depending on the fight. Most times i just slash enemies to pieces as that is the quickest way but it depends on the fight and how you build your character.

I am finding that the game is very easy on hard.

It was never hard, I just think it would be more fun and or if down the road were it a thing, than i wanted to know for sure so i could get better at it.

I think I figured it out, its about where the camera is I think as to the moves I found if i move the camera facing oposite my characters direction then he does the whirl and swing and others.

Yes, i learned this recently and that is how i fight now, did the same in TW1 and i was very proficient in killing many enemies without using the group technique.

If after you start a strike you point the camera to an enemy behind you you can keep attacking without stopping but there is a problem with targeting sometimes as it is slow to target so it breaks the combinations.

The targeting is what is giving me the post problems in TW2 combat as it is not fast enough, maybe it can be improved with 2.0 patch.

Another good technique is to attack monsters from a few feet away as Geralt does some good moves if you time it correctly. This does not work well with soldiers with shields.

Spamming the same comment across different threads, er...may be you want Witcher 2 to be like Dragon Age 2.

I take it that there's a post missing somewhere in this thread?
(Otherwise, it's gone a little surreal a couple of posts up from here)

I guess someone found out the effects of a heavy attack...or maybe it was a finisher move

For me it was the groups of soldiers where you have 2 or more carrying shields that gave the most trouble . But yeah once you figure out the whens and wheres it becomes a whole lot easier .

I noticed on the training dummies, there is defintely attack chaining. For light attacks, the third attack and further chained attacks seem to be the ones where geralt is doing a spin along with a slash.
