I don't consider the boxing stance an issue at all. If anything, it's telling you get ready to pull a sword. Tested both sword types now, and everything works great. This will be a popular mod.

If that's what it takes to completely prevent the automatic unsheathing from triggering I'll gladly take it.
I'm used to draw swords manually anytime anyway, so at least for me there would hardly ever be a bringing your fists to a sword fight-like situation any longer.

Thanks for testing and the feedback!

Can't wait to try out the mod myself when I'm back at my place in a couple of hours.

And who knows - considering how simple it seems to be to override the mechanic altogether via some injected scripting CDPR might reconsider and eventually come around implementing an on/off switch similar to the alternate movement one at a later point. Maybe an UI-less screenshot function as well.

It isn't really 'injected scripting' as much as modification/replacement of the 'default scripting'. Though additional scripting is possible.
If I understood it correctly it tests "Geralt has no weapon" and returns "what'evs bro. I can take it" rather than "hmm let me see, it uses essense, thus I shall draw my silver weapon." and "Geralt has a sword" and returns "cool, lets go and hit things" rather than "hmm. Wait a moment, don't I need to change swords", or "I blinked and can't see any enemies, time to nap". (Pseudocode, rather than what is actually used, but I hope the meaning shines clear).

I don't think that the boxing is a problem at all. Why? Because I don't really consider deactivating the automatic unsheathing... deactivating the automatic sheathing absolutely suffices. Love you, guys!

OK, as has been pointed out, there's now a mod for this over at Nexus:
http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/319/?

As this has moved it over into modding territory, any further discussion is probably best in the modding sub-forum.

And please, if you've picked up this guy's mod and found it useful, don't forget to endorse it over at The Nexus :)

Edit: But, of course, it doesn't solve it for Console users, so you may want to continue here...

Well, the problem is obviously NOT fixed if console users are given the middle finger.

Mods work like a freaking charm.
And it really is mind boggling why the vanilla game wasn't released with a simple on/off toggle or something along these lines, considering that it takes just one dude on the internet and some editing in two or three scripts to get to the more or less same result.

By the way, the same dude just released an optional CombatDistanceFix Mod which should be of interest for everyone that always wanted the Deflect Arrows Skill to work not just most of the time but all the time instead.

So that massively increases combat-enter range. Which can have its downsides. If the weapon-drawing and -sheathing was manual and properly implemented, then that could trigger combat mode. Would be much more elegant.

Thesis: Something that has "fix" in the name shouldn't be a mod. ;-)

We're getting there.
The CombatDistanceFix part of the No Auto Sheathe/Unsheathe Mod Suite has been reworked to trigger the combat stance only once you pull out your sword, which actually works almost too good. You can basically stand there while hostiles keep whacking you and Geralt won't lift a finger until you draw manually. Just like in The Witcher 2.

What doesn't seem to work correctly as of now is exiting the combat stance at any time by manually sheathing. Sometimes it'll exit combat mode the moment you sheathe, while other times it won't.

Make sure that you have the latest versions of the mod files.
Auto unsheathing on horseback shouldn't happen any longer, according to one of skyrayfox's recent posts on the Nexus forums.
