Best character in video games, Bloody Baron

The game won GOY, but if there was an award for best character in supporting role, that should go to the Bloody Baron. Perhaps best character in a video games ever.

Baron is a good written character :)
You hate him for what he did to his family, but same time you feel sorry for him.
I liked that quest line very much. I'd say it was maybe the best quest line in this game.

i liked Cerys more.. that Possesion quest, if you trusted her, was brilliant... she really tricked the Hyme (and player)...

That she surely did and that quest was one of my favorites :D Biggest WTF moment in this game I think...

But I couldn't feel that deep for Cerys, although she is a fine character too. Cerys is "just nice", Baron is more complicated with his asshole and guilty guy sides. Just like one I knew in real life. Maybe that was the reason I liked, and hated, Baron so deep. But after all, these are just opinions, there is no right answer :)

Good character, but far from Best ever, imo.

Planescape: Torment has better npcs, imo.

That game have BEST EVERYTHING. But, as far as The Witcher games are concerned - he is the best written character, imo

Very well written, far from best in gaming, not 'even' best in Witcher series.
He's interesting but he's practically a sympathetic Robert Baratheon and his presentation lacks subtelty compared ton other highlights in Witcher series.

I can only comment on the English version of the game but the character is helped by a marvelous acting performance. In fact, writing issues aside, this game has probably the best voice acting of any game to date for no other reason than the actors have actually taken their job serious for once.

To @Sunsibar and @fgfanta

I agree with you both. In my opinion he's the most tragic NPC in TW3. He remembers me a little bit on figures from the ancient mythology. As Aristoteles wrote: "He is responsible for his bad luck but it doesn't happen from a negative motivation."

Well said. In a universe that includes Crassius Curio, it's hard for me to call him best ever. But he is unusually complex and well-realized for a computer game.

bloody baron is a well writen character but not the best character in video gams ever, by any chance, there other characters with wit more probabilities to be the best ever

Baron's main strength comes from being an atypical video game character, a well realized representation of an abusive drunkard husband and father is not something you usually see in a video game. He is very well written and the game does a good job in showing different layers of his personality. In real life I had met people of that profile and I fail to sympathize with him, and I find his excuses weak. He undeniably has some redeeming qualities, but not enough for me to consider him a decent human being, he is a weak man that failed to control his alcohol abuse and his temper at the expense of his family. He only realized the damage he did to them when both his wife and daughter were permanently scarred by his behavior. I played both variations of his questline and I find the ending where he hangs himself more fitting for a tragic character he is. Family Matters is definitely one of the best quests in TW3, but for me Baron is not the best character in TW universe, and certainly not the best in video games ever.

The Baron was by far one of the most fleshed out and interesting NPCs I have ever seen in a game.

It's amazing how they can write him so very unlikeable and yet at the same time make him likeable and relatable, make us feel sorry for him despite all his mistakes, make us believe he is trying to repent almost.

The way he was written was incredible, the way the story is mysterious, how vague he is, how he conveniently leaves huge parts of exposition out and steadily the story unwinds. You're left questioning his motives during the quests, is he genuinely in love with Anna or is she merely a possession he wanted to lock up, did she steal something? Does she know something we don't? Did he do more than he claims? Is he going to kill her? It's never clear during that first play through what is going on because he's written to be so shady, temperamental and defensive regarding the situation.

It's a shame there was no happy ending for him but I understand that the reason for that is to prove that consequences have to be lived with. I would have liked to see him back at Crows Perch...felt empty there without him.

In terms of nuance he's no Letho, Phillipa or even Iorveth. But he's an incredibly sympathetic and flawed character, just trying to make things better. Very easy to relate to. Also helps he had amazing voice overs.
