Books and their worth...

Just hit chapter 2 and the books I can buy are up to about 500 Oren, So far I have about 2500 Oren..So my question is, how vital are books, sure I gather that some books are more important than others, but so far I havn't found much else that needs money spent on it...What % of incme have people spent on books... And am I doing badly with 2500 at start of chapter 2? ;DAre there any books that are a must have?Sly...

It quite depends really. Many of the books you will find eventually in a house or barrel etc and can save the cost, but then you may not know if you might just need the particular monster part for a quest. So best to check all places for books before running off to do monster slaying. Also talk to each and every person you meet - sometimes they give you monster or herb journal entries so you don't need to buy the books. If in doubt or if you need some monster parts quickly, get the book and sell it after reading :)Oh, and our wiki also has some info on where to find some sources of information of monsters and herbs if you don't mind being spoiled :)

The Witcher's Library... 8) when you are broke check the desired title in the library. It tells you the location. Some books are a reward for a quest, some are hidden in a trunk, etc. If there is no "for free source" in the "location" column you have more or less to buy it.

I buy all the monster and plants books, starting in Act1.It's pretty easy to to kill 5 barghest, that buys the dogs book, kill another 20, that buys the plants book etc...More than enough orens for everything in TW, you just gotta go get them.

Golly! That's an extremely unethical guide! Young Witchers, do not heed its advice! What sins have Ramsmeat's guard committed that merit killing them? What about the owners of the goods in the containers?

First, go thru every house and get everything encluding the books. Read and sell them ASAP. You MUST have read certain books before you do certain quests. The quest note will say what prerequisite knowledge is needed before you proceed. You must have knowledge about the monster in your journal before you can successfully complete the quest. The books also provide valuable knowledge of the alchemical ingredients you can harvest from those monsters. These ingredients are usually very important for special potions or other quests.Money IS an issue in the game. The designers wre kind of stingy. Books are expensive. So buy the right book when you need them. Later, when you are laoded you can buy all the books you want, and you should get as many of the books that aren't brown as you can, ready them, and sell them right back. Always keep books you find to sell them back to the Antiquarians in the game.As an example: Read a book about plants so that you can harvest them for potion making when you mediatate and to sell the ingredients. So let's talk about money, ever heard of dice?? Hear's my semi-cheat tip. Find someone to play dice poker with (follow the process from Zoltan). Save your game before you play someone. bet the highest levels. Play until you win, and save when you are done (if you lose, restart from the save and play until you win). Play with everyone you can. Eventually, thye run out money with a couple exceptions. This will help you an your way.Money 2: Picking up weapons for sale. This takes a lot of time, but it must be done. You have to pick up weapons and sell them. if you can't sell them, becasue it's night time, for instance, take them to the innkeeper for storage until you can. Find the weapon values in the game guide and always make sure you keep the most expensive weapons. By the way, the torch is the most expensive overrated thing in the game. Always keep a torch rather than a dagger. Other goodies are illegal swords, most holy swords, steel axes and dwarven axes and hammers.Bottom line, grasshopper: You've got to have books, they are expensive. You have to have money for books. The most important thing to know is to pace this buying with lucrative quests, keeping in mind you must build you warchest of cash to upgrade you armor $5000.00 and swords $1600.00+ each.

Er, I'm happy for you to play this way if that's what appeals to you, but I can say for sure that it isn't true that it MUST be done. I pick up one weapon when I fight, and I sell it the next time I need to go to the blacksmith for some other reason -- I probably sell four weapons in the entire game.

I agree that pacing the buying of books is important -- no need to spring for the book on strigas until Chapter V, for example. I just had the blacksmith in Act I make me a three-meteorite sword, and it cost $900 -- where are you getting the $1600 figure from?

It's good to save one barghest skull for later, won't say why since it kinda spoils but better to keep one than not. No more appear later.

I always read all of the books (including lore books). However, books are unnecessary in Chapter I, so I never buy them there. The journal entries for all monsters and herbs in the chapter can be obtained from old ladies in the village, as well as the Monster Lore talent. In Chapter II there are more money-earning options, so I start buying them there.

Well, the way I figure, I could loot houses and such, or I can avoid most houses and focus on my getting rich schemes, and buy the books.I think I miss a few quests that way, but whatever.
