Books in The Witcher 2

are the books in the witcher 2 meaningful like the books in the first witcher game? or are they only for background info on monsters, battles, etc...?

Some of them have effects in game, though in general these are less important than in TW1. For example, when you accept a witcher contract, you have to learn about the monsters you're to eliminate. You can do this by reading the corresponding monster book, or by going out and killing some.

You mean Endregas and Nekkers. But yes, have you noticed how when you learn something new a little text shows in the lower-right corner, telling you what you learned?

Monster knowledge is divided in "thirds", so if you kill for example Nekkers, eventually you will notice how you gained one third (1/3) of Nekker related knowledge. If you keep killing more, eventually you will learn all three thirds and Geralt will how to dispose of these monsters. If you read a book about Nekkers, you will gain full knowledge of the beast which means you don't have to go on killing sprees.

On the other hand, going on killing sprees helps you to collect more ingredients that you may find useful later. So it's up to you.
